So its not the sound card then?
Probably not if the input itself shows up. Headphone/mic combo ports are interesting. If getting the 4 notch cable doesn't work then I'd consider a USB sound/mic dongle. I've used them successfully in the past with some of my scanners of yore

Headphone/mic combo ports can be tricky. Are you sure you don't have another app managing your sound input settings? Not familiar with how ASUS does things but with Dell if you plug in an input to a combo port the sound management software (if installed) will ask if the input is a headphone, microphone, etc and set the input accordingly. If all else fails go with the external USB sound card as the headphone and mic ports are separate. You can always channel the input from the USB card to output to your laptop's built-in sound card via Windows volume mixer

not sure what else to do guys.....
Google it. I see a lot of helpful web pages & suggestions. Why don't you try them

{edit}. The root cause is the Microphone input doesn't show plugged in, in the Win Mixer. I don't know if it's the cable, or another app as Whiskey3JMC suggested. You may have to tell the other app or the OS to configure the jack as a Microphone jack. Please google it.

Highly doubtful you're chatting with an actual human being there. Response looks awfully generic & automated to me. As @ProScan suggested Google it. Start your search query with your laptop's make & model & include in your query something like "external microphone not working" See what suggestions are offered on various support pages there. I've worked in the IT industry for 2 decades and am not ashamed to admit I utilize Google frequently to research various issues
