Hello, I am soon getting my BCD996P2 scanner and I plan to build a Yagi antenna for 800 mhz to listen to local police, fire, etc. and point it towards one tower. On the RR database, it has all the frequencies for the towers for my county, do I need to program them all in or just the ones associated with the tower?

The trunked site for the county you are in is here. If your scanner does cc only then you could get away with the 4 freqs with the trailing c.

i just program the primary and alternate control channels for the system. but in configuring the system for your radio you should select the tower nearest you. if you're using software to program the radio the primary and alt. control channels should be automatically included when you select the closet tower.

The frequencies should be listed by site. You need to program in all the frequencies for the relevant site. In a simulcast system, a site and a tower are not the same thing. A site is a collection of towers, all using the same frequencies. The purpose of the yagi is to isolate reception to only one tower within the site.

EDIT: As noted in posts above, you can choose to only program the control channel frequencies and alternate control frequencies. But your question implies that you can program frequencies for individual towers. That isn't possible in a simulcast system.

Are you certain you need a Yagi antenna? It might cause more problems than help. How far are you located from that one tower. Try the stock telescoping back-of-set antenna first, fully collapsed, it might be all you need.

The site is simulcast. All of the other responses about towers v sites and programming frequencies of the site are right on. The BCD996p2 is not the best receiver of simulcast signals. If signal is strong, the least antenna may be the solution. You need to research simulcast issues. Sometimes a paper clip is a better solution than a powerful yagi.

Sites in statewide systems often do not honor county lines. I would also include this site in Barry County. Plainwell radio traffic will probably be on it.
