A vendor can easily check the year of manufacture before they ship it to you without even opening the box. The portion of the serial number that's printed on the outside of the box shows the year that the unit was manufactured. The serial number information contains only the year, not the month or day.

The first digit after S/N shows the year of manufacture. The second digit after the S/N is the assembly location (8=Vietnam). The last 6 digits show the sequence number of the build for that year, which does not correspond to a month or day.

The first number after S/N...

8=2018 (first released)
9=2019
0=2020
1=2021
2=2022

This one was manufactured in 2018.

What does 3 mean? I have no Z.

look at the tag on the rear of the scanner, inside the battery compartment. The first digit after the "Z" indicates the year of manufacture. The one in this photo would be 2018.

Thanks, fxdscon!

My first SDS100 was made in 2018 (I couldn't wait to get my hands on one!), and my second SDS100 was made in 2020. Those dates correspond to the years in which I bought them.

For what it's worth, I had to send both radios to Jon Wienke to get the dreaded J401 cold solder joint issue repaired.

There couldn't be a 3 as the first digit in the serial number on the box as is being discussed in the post you quoted. That would indicate the scanner was made in 2023. If you are looking at the serial number tag on the scanner, check here...

Hello, hunterca.

If I remember correctly, there are two serial numbers for the SDS100. The serial numbers that appear on the box and on the bar code strip inside the battery compartment have the "Z" in them.

Then there's the "electronic" serial number you'll find in the "settings" menu under scanner information. That one has no "Z" in it and is used when you interact with Uniden to upgrade your scanner to handle DMR or NXDN. Again, if I remember correctly, the numbers "2,6, and 0" replace the "Z." Otherwise, the rest of the serial numbers are identical

I hope I got that right . . . if I didn't, someone will correct me.

That is correct... in the case of reading the "ESN" from the scanner's menu system, the digit indicating the year of manufacture would be the first digit following the "260" group....

The ESN from the pic in post #20 would be:

For what it's worth, some of the revised hardware models now have an A in the serial # instead of a Z, so that's certainly something to keep an eye out for.

And yes, that revised hardware is board level components, i.e. chips that had to be changed out due to the omnipresent worldwide shortages.

Jon fixed the cold solder joints, added an internal GPS and replaced the battery latch on my 2018 SDS100. Zero problems. The battery latch was free. The GPS has performed flawlessly. I'm glad he did it before he "disappeared."

Thank you for the response. It's got me baffled because it seems to work than nothing. My Motorola is picking up Barrie Police and OPP ,MOH where the scanner is missing everything. Probably should just send it in.

I just purchased a 100 today from Amazon from Police Scanner Outlet, which as I understand, is Bearcat Warehouse, where is from which I purchased my 200 back in April 2020. I purchased one of the first 100 units when it came out and decided to get rid of it shortly after not noticing much of a difference from it from my old 436, but my county in Michigan at the time didn‘t go digital until 2021. I’m still not happy with the battery situation, another catalyst to get rid of it, but I am willing to give it another go.

I will let you guys know what my SN is as I am hoping I get one of the presumed revised hardware units, but after reading comments about NOS showing up for units made 9 months before purchased last summer, I’m not so confident that will happen. Maybe there was enough of a shortage last fall and during the winter and I will get lucky.

Nope, 2021 production year here too. Doesn’t sound like much is out there from 2022, maybe because there weren’t many produced in 2022 due to the shortages, and at that not until the second half of last year.

When I got mine back in January of 2022 and turned it on the display said, "Copyright 2018" and I scratched my head a little and wondered, but the serial number says it was made in Vietnam in 2021. I still remember how confusing that radio could be in the first few weeks.

It will say 2018 forever since that’s when it was released the same as the 200 says 2019 and the 436 says either 2014 or 2015 if I remember correctly due to copyright dates.

I’m sending it back . I want something made in 2022. I’ll need to call around I guess to see if I can find a vendor with 2022 produced units in stock. Allegedly a Facebook group I’m in one member said he just got one with a 2022 production year from Scanner Master. Either that or I’ll wait a couple more months and buy another one to see if I get a 2022 unit.

If there's no issue with the hum, I'm not sure why you'd send it back. There's no evidence a 2022 model is better in any way than a 2021 model. Mine is a 2021 and there are no issues with it.

I bought a 100 to compliment my 200. My 200 is three years old and fine. I did the mod to it when I got it. I just want a revised 100 with the new hardware in it if I’m going to buy one.
