Same here. I definitely have a back light. It's dimmer than the 100, but Paul's explanation does help to know whether my back light is or isn't working as intended.
True, but then there are people like wise871 that the sds200 is NOT functioning at spec according to UPMan reasoning .

Well sort of . They are not as bright as I’m used to but I can live with it because the keys do light up and I can read them . Maybe not in a vehicle at a quick glance but at home I’m ok with it .

Yeah I understand the normal should be dimmer then we are used to but on mine, even with my hands cupped over the keypad the light is nonexistent, I guess I'll just use a flashlight to see the keypad of my 700$ scanner.

Wonder how many of the users will return the unit cause the keypad light?

Only those that a bright backlit keypad is a deal-breaker. I can see where if someone was using the scanner in an extremely low light situation and they are unable to quickly navigate the scanner's FLs, it would be a major problem. But, if that's the way the cookie crumbles, I'd be looking into the purchase of one of those little goose-neck lamps rather than send the radio in for a refund. Lemons = Lemonade, that sorta thing. wise's situation looks to be a faulty something - as there seems to be NO backlit keypad in his photo. I hope he gets his radio squared away.

I have two SDS200s and the back light is identical on both. Really a faint glow that you can't see in a lit room unless you cup your hands around the keys or go into the menu and toggle the key lights on and off.

Just because this is spec doesn’t mean it’s right. It’s 2019 I shouldn’t have the same backlight technology from a Nokia 3310. Serious question how could this be seen by any effort if used in a vehicle at night? Sorry I’m not buying it.

I would say that my key backlighting is not as bright as the display at max brightness, but are otherwise perfectly readable. It may be a manufacturing variation on some units, or maybe some people don't see well in the dark / have uncorrected cataracts / have problems with contrast and need extra brightness. Could also be people's eyes are adapting to a bright screen, and the difference in luminance is too great - might try turning down the screen brightness a bit.

Yes, it can be seen in a vehicle at night.
The SDS-200s with working backlights can be seen at night. The SDS-200s with defective/anemic backlights cannot be seen. I'm not mad or complaining, just speaking the truth:(.

If you can barely see the keys in a pitch black room this is clearly a failure in my view. But issues with Uniden products these days are sometimes minimized as seen in this thread, and unfortunately, not just by the usual fanboys. At least I've not seen the obligatory "wait for the next firmware, that might fix this" comment yet. Just from an aesthetic standpoint, it's ridiculous that a $700 scanner has such horrid keypad lighting. I can't think of any other top-end base scanner with keypad lighting that uneven.

Regarding credit cards: I agree that a merchant / manufacturer should have a chance to make things right before going the charge reversal route. However, with Visa you have total protection against getting ripped off, and if you are proactive and talk to Visa once you aren't getting satisfaction from the merchant or manufacturer, you have a very strong chance of having Visa come down on your side, and there isn't a thing wrong with that. When I purchased a SDS100 and decided that its performance was completely unacceptable for multiple reasons, I went back to the seller and told them I wasn't going along with their restocking fee. They were either going to compromise, or I would have the charge reversed completely. They relented, and we reached a compromise that gave them a little something for their efforts, while giving nearly all of my money back. I'm a fair person, so I did this instead of essentially putting the hurt on the vendor (a small company). In the future I won't buy a scanner until it hits Amazon, where full returns are mandated by Amazon. No way am I buying one before I can get one on Amazon or be sure that I will not have to pay a restocking fee.
