Both units with displays covered with foil tape, all room lights off, nearly dark outside.

The man said they are to spec so I would say you have a couple of options. Number 1 is what I will be doing when I raise the cash for one. If you think you did not get $700 worth option two is available. Really not that complicated.

1. Deal with it.
2. Return the unit and get a refund

Some of the photos seem to indicate to me the key backlight is not working at all and the reason the keys look partially dimly lit is that the main display in some photos have bright white letters on the display and this light from the display appears to be transiting over to the keypad to dimly light it. Imho it looks like the keypad backlight in those photos is clearly not lit due either to a failed light or poor connection. Especially when comparing it to other photos where u see a bright light just behind the number 5 key. Just use common sense and you can easily tell that some are defective and some work otherwise all the photos would be similiar even if they were not defective. Just my opinion.

It's not a deal breaker to me by any means but it would be nice if they were like the 100.

Of course there not going to say anything is wrong with the backlights. I'm sure they don't want another repeat of the 536HP fiasco. Several of the photos clearly show a problem as pointed out by others but it's Unidens call. Nothing more to see here. Topic might as well be CLOSED.

The keypad backlight on my SDS200 is very dim. Even in a darkened room I have to cup my hands around the display to detect the lighting. This is not an issue for me as I do not intend to use it in the dark. Others may have problem if they purchased the radio for use in a dark room or vehicle. It would be nice if it were variable to suit all applications. But that is not the case.

My keypad is extremely dim. Even in pitch black room I have to look really close at the keypad to see what the keys even say. After looking at the pictures in this thread, mine is nothing like the ones that are actually bright. There is clearly a issue here.

If the specification was "If they can't read the keys without a flashlight, then too bad", then I agree - it's in spec. But we will never know what the internal spec is....

Yeah I understand the normal should be dimmer then we are used to but on mine, even with my hands cupped over the keypad the light is nonexistent, I guess I'll just use a flashlight to see the keypad of my 700$ scanner.
I have to ask not knowing how you have yours setup but you do have the keypad light turned on in settings?

Just got mine today from Scanner Master. Keypad backlight is not the brightest but I can see it illuminated with a small room lamp on right next to it. The center of the keypad is slightly brighter than the edges, but not by much.

When will early adopters realize they are beta testers? This is sounding like early SDS100 threads that resulted in weekly updates. You apparently pay your money and take your chances with Uniden products.
