System created in the database. As soon as they go on the air and you guys can determine control channels, SysID/WACN and whether it's Phase I or Phase II, please submit that info. Have fun!

Topeka / Shawnee County (P25) Trunking System

Wow, you don't mess around! From all the information I have read I don't believe there will be any phase II capable radios on the system from most agencies.

A quick update on progress on the new Shawnee County / Topeka system. The new towers have been completed in the northwest and southeast areas of the county. System equipment and the microwave links still have to be installed.

The implementation plan is to have non-essential services switch to the system first (public works and mass transit) to work out any system bugs. Then, emergency services will switch over from analog to digital. This is a huge project that includes replacing radios in nearly all emergency vehicles in the county and issuing new portable radios to all firefighters countywide.

Any word on encryption for the L.E. side? Last I heard was TPD/SNCO planned to leave the routine dispatch channels open, while tac/specialized ops would be encoded.

Still the word. However, unlike the state system, they have built in OTAP / OTAR (Over the Air Programming / Rekeying). So, if something happened to change their mind they could encrypt the whole system and radio attached to it with some simple keystrokes. Or, they could dynamically create a new talk group plan. End users wouldn't know if the talk group number changes. And, they can automatically rekeying the encryption periodically to frustrate any hacking attempts.

Let me do some looking in my files here but I believe they dropped the OTAR in favor of a more expensive fire station alerting system (which they have now decided against and have put the money towards a new CAD system instead) If I remember correctly OTAP was a separate option and they kept it.

Edit: I can't find it now. If it is still around I will go back and listen to the final commission meeting where the system was approved, I think Lance Royer talks about removing it there.

I'm not sure what type of gear they're going for, but I believe OTAP comes standard on the APX units. Not sure about the XTS/XTL radios, though.

Both features are available on both style of radio, it's in the software that they purchase and in the case of OTAR a piece of hardware at the controller.

Most if not all county public safety agencies will be getting APXs, the other county agencies will get XTS/XTLs or whatever they purchase that is P25 able.

I asked in a meeting the other day and found out that we will have the OTAR on our P25 here in Shawnee County. Which is encouraging for those of us who have to respond and put get comms plans for IMT and etc.

I have been helping some agencies with their radio orders and mostly Fire and LEO are going to have the APX. EMS, Library, Hospitals, EMA, Transportation, Public Works, City services, Airport are staying with either 1500's or 2500's. Esp since Harris, Kenwood and Motorola is having some good sales going on right now. In EMA I am looking at the Tri-band radios for interop and they are priced pretty good as well.

It's Alive!!!

I have had a scanner programmed to the new system for awhile, and it just went live today!

The CC I have them using now is 852.4250.

Site ID: 058Eh-0301

I have 5 bars on my 996T, but I haven't heard any traffic yet so I don't know how it will decode in the simulcast environment. I am crossing my fingers!

....Keep us apprised on what you hear. I live in Shawnee Co. and need to upgrade my scanner collection to include something P 25 compatible .....looking at buying a 436HP. Since it appears that it will be sometime this summer before everyone in the county is on the new system, I am not in a big hurry to get a new scanner, yet, but still would like to hear what others have to say ref: Shawnee county's P 25 system as it relates to scanner monitoring so as to have a better understanding of what to expect.

I Started monitoring a scanner here in Shawnee Co. back in the 70's and am excited to enter in to this new era.

Heard my first Conversation the new Topeka system. Two guys talking on 2451. Sound like radio techs.

Sounded really great no issues at all on my 396t. They were talking about the new APX radios and how good they sounded. Then mentioned about doing some radio checks at the jail to see if they work inside this weekend.

With the other P 25 simulcast systems up and running , your monitoring location(s) and whether your using a base or hand held seems to be an issue as far as performance goes....could we go a little bit further in description as far as location(s) monitoring from and whether base or hand held....or should that become a separate topic/thread? I don't have any skin in this game game (P 25 simulcast compatible scanner) yet, but I am very interested in what is being heard in Shawnee Co. already as far as the scanner user would be concerned.
