Feds are sniffing around SIRN project

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The West Virginia Legislative Auditor's Office has widened its review of the state's use of $126.3 million in federal stimulus funds to expand high-speed Internet.

After revealing in February that the state wasted millions of dollars on oversize Internet routers, auditors now are scrutinizing another part of the project: a $33 million upgrade to West Virginia's emergency communication tower network.

Legislative auditors are combing through more than 900 pages of records that document how the state spent stimulus funds to expand the state's existing 87-tower network -- a project designed to bolster public safety and make Internet available to homes in rural areas. The state has purchased new radio equipment and satellite dishes for existing tower sites, and is building up to 17 new towers.

New tower?

I was running my Pro-106 on Unitrunker this afternoon and on the Elkins tower, one of the peers that came up was site number 001-040. Control channel of 453.375 Mhz. Anyone else picked this up?

Edit: Also showing up on Salem and McWhorter sites also.

Might be Kanawha Head (Upshur)

Kanawha Head (UPSHUR) 453.3750 453.4375 453.8500 460.1875

Anybody around the southern tip of Upshur Co area that might be able to monitor 453.375 and see if this is indeed the site moochie is referencing?

apparently Keyser PD has switched to the system. I'm unsure on how to scan for new TG's but just a heads up if you catch anything off the keyser site.

I added this to the RRDB as site 1-040 Kanawha Head (unconfirmed). If it turns out not to be Kanawha Head it can be changed, but based upon other sites reporting it as a site neighbor, the fact that there is an active license for this site, etc I figure it probably is Kanawha Head.

Once somebody [in/around southern Upshur Co] is able to run Unitrunker or Pro96Com on 453.375 and gather primary/alternate control channels, other site frequencies, and site neighbors, we'll know for sure.

Thanks for keeping your eyes peeled on site changes. That certainly helps to nail down elusive unconfirmed sites.

Hats off to the legislature, we don't even have cell phone coverage in many parts of WV and they wasted money on high speed internet for Podunk towns. Amazing....

I am noticing at times that I don't get any Charleston Traffic for a few days then it picks up,I am thinking maybe the Malden tower is having issues at times(right now I have no Charleston traffic at all,did full blast a few days ago). I get regular traffic from the turnpike, and raleigh and nicholas county sometimes, but I usually listen to Charleston traffic alot and I get peed off when there's nothing coming in. More than likely there's nothing I can do about it until it resolves itself. I just hate it when all that traffic isn't hitting me.

Again as I do not know how to scan talk groups, Potomac Valley Hospital is now using the system to receive hospital patches. If someone can t ell me how to scan for new talk groups, I'll look for KPD and PVH.

Most if not all of those sites have been listed in the Wiki for many motnhs. now. Any time new apps are filed for SIRN, I update the wiki. They've been inactive for months but have been listed in the wiki all of that time. I will update the wiki with the callsign info now that there are actual callsigns.

Huntington p25 control channels (a)

I notice from the list that Huntington has picked up quite a few frequencies.
They were needed as the cops got shut out on a few occasions and were unhappy.
My question of the day is: why two alternate control channels?
There is one other site with two alternate control channels (wheeling simulcast).
The other site does not have as many regular channels.
I looked in the wiki but did not find an answer.
I may have not known the correct question to ask.

The likely reason for more than two CCs (a CC and an AC) is likely because CC's may have changed over time and somebody just submitted the new CCs, which were added. the only way to tell which ones are actual CCs is to monitor the site with a trunking program. A trunking program will tell you in 5 seconds which control channel is the active one and which one is the alternate. Then we can update that particular site to reflect teh current primary/secondary and remove any erroneously marked control channel.

I don't think the CC limit is 2. I think it's more of a case that the administrators of the system typically just set it up for two control channels. I sometimes see more control channels on simulcast sites, but I'd venture to say that any site listing more than two control channels is an error on our part or a submitters part.

I got it.
Don't have monitoring program tho.
Expensive?

Free. But your scanner has to support it (via computer-to-Pc interface or via a discriminator tap on the scanner). If you're really interested, feel free to PM me the type of scanner(s) you have and I'll let you know what your options are.
