Here's a blast from the past! MOOSE in the International Callsign Handbook c1992 by Gayle Van Horn!

Thanks! Now that I think about it, MOOSE (or maybe LOBSTA) sounds like an obvious Down East callsign.

After the fueling, SKULL 12 called DOOM 51 on 228.275 and said that their laser transmitter was inop and requested that DOOM do buddy lasing when they got to the range.

Looks like they went to the Pecos MOA west of Cannon AFB in New Mexico.

Also heard Mussel 7 & 8 "Ops normal" on 1st Helo Squadron freq, I think 120.9? I need to move the damn gear shifter, it's in the way! I'm not even sure I have that freq in the scanner! For all the frequencies I have in the radio I really don't hear a lot. A lot of key ups on CAP freq 324.400 (but no audio) and 135.xxx, again no audio.

At the place I rent I'm in the basement and get zero reception down here. It's a serious bummer.

20:08 on 121.500 was "I'll be coming in behind you." Then "There's a bunch of you tonight." Lastly, different aircraft stated "Yes there is...United 768."

A quick check of Flight Aware showed flight United 768 was Southeast of DC, flying Northeast at 35,000 feet, headed to Newark.

Strange to use 121.5 as air to air!

Using 121.5 to chat is indeed considered a little rude in some quarters. After the 9-11 attacks in 2001 you almost have to monitor 121.5 even over land in case you miss a frequency change and go lost comm. Years ago, mostly the international folks monitored guard 121.5 out over the water. The domestic flights often had a company ops frequency in the second radio or 123.45 to chat and pass sports scores for the pax in the back.

These days the majority of transmissions I hear on my scanner on 121.5 are accidental. Sometimes you get a Delta Sky God doing a long public address announcement for a bunch of New Yorkers going to Fort Lauderdale. As soon as he/she/they are finished you hear a warm chorus of reviews of the speech from pilots of other less prestigious airlines. ;)

A friend tells me that it is very easy to push the wrong button on the audio control panel and make an inadvertent transmission. I've never done it myself of course...

You have the guard police on 121.5 that shout out 'on guard!' anytime they hear as much as a mic click on the frequency. A Speedbird (British Airways) pilot whose accent suggested that he was from the home counties and went to an Oxbridge college replied, 'what did d'Artagnan say to the Three Musketeers?' This literary pun was probably lost on the vast majority of the listening pilot audience. Most pilots probably think The Three Musketeers was written by Alexander Dumbass. :)

A Falcon Virgo exercise popped up just after 105AM local. Using "channel 19" to talk to Huntress which seems to be 260.9. 126.2 is simulated guard freq. Blackjack 1 is the helo. TOIs are CAP2582 A462FE, a Cessna 182 Skylane from Manassas and PAT322 ADFE51, a Beech C12V Huron from Fort Belvoir. They've been on 139.7, 260.9, 335.5 and several others that were too many and too fast to copy, as unprepared as I was for this surprise. Comms were fast and furious until about 120AM local then silence for about 15 minutes...picking up again at 138AM. ADSB shows PAT322 crossed the Bay and reversed just NW of Salisbury after first going a couple of racetrack patterns over Baltimore then going as far as south of Fort A.P. Hill. ADSB showing a MLAT hit for 2E8C2F southwest of Upper Marlboro. PAT332 has been as high as 8000 feet...not about 5000 feet...while CAP2582 has been consistently around 2500 feet. Almost 2AM now and I feel sleep calling me just after hearing a reference to COSMIC 01. INSERT: COSMIC01 on 335.5 request "direct Atlantic City as a 2-ship" at 155AM.

PETRO 51 is off Hono with a timing turn, possibly for the Blues to get in trail. Fat Albert off the at deck at Kāneʻohe as well.

PETRO 51 (63-8026) and PETRO 52 (57-1427) supported NAVY BLUE ANGEL 01 flight from
Kaneohe Bay to Colorado Springs Municipal Airport [KCOS]. ALTRV Coronet West 464.

Hope this helps,

René.

Monday there was an Exercise in W-72 area off the VA / NC coast. F-22s were fighting F/A-18s. Unfortunately, I can only hear as far south as W-386. The exercise went on from 9:30L to 18:30L with about a two break between 13:00L to 15:00L. Apparently, it also involved a US Boat. I believe the F/A-18s were mostly west coast. A P-8 and KC-10 were orbiting off the MD coast. STEELJAW E-2C was orbiting over Pax River. I was also monitoring LiveATC for KNTU and KLFI.
