Got to visit (TDY) to lovely, downtown Alice Springs & Pine Gap in the early '80s. As I remember Alice Springs' airport wasn't vey big, so they must've expanded it or else it's a tricky C-17 landing.

Yes it is active. I think when conditions are good - the UHF ground side comes in as well as the VHF ground side.

We pick up all that just down the road in Benson. Buddy of mine in High Point can’t hear anything except the ARTCC UHF frequencies when someone is coming over the state.

I use a Diamond discone D130J. It's been up 15 feet from the ground for 22 years. Still works and looks like new. Don't get the cheaper imitations.
