Inbound Dover req ground power and offload for support for a DV.

Guys,

Just got a copy of Teak Publishing's International Callsign Handbook-5th Edition. It's authored by Larry Van Horn, of former Monitoring Times fame. It's being sold on Amazon.com and price is $7.49 US.

Larry has the handbook arranged in such a way as to make finding the callsign you just heard a breeze. The e-version is in .pdf format and totally searchable

If you're into any sort of radio monitoring (HF, VHF/UHF, military, governmental, ets) this is an indispensable working aid. For home use you can download it onto your PC, and tablet, phone or Kindle for mobile use.

I highly recommend it for the serious radio hobbyist and at $7.49 even for casual use it's a bargain.

Anybody notice any flyovers at Arlington today?
Maj Troy Gilbert was buried today.

Tomorrow a former work colleague who had retired from HMX-1 many years ago as a GySgt will be interred.

Military Air Scanning in Northeastern NJ

I posted this question in the Military Air Forum but thought this might be a better place to post.

I have recent;y become interested in monitoring military aircraft. I have read a lot on the RR forums and elsewhere so I understand that it can be a challenging hit or miss hobby. I also understand that there are some limitations if I do not have an outdoor antenna.

I am in Union County NJ so am near most of the metro airports. I have a BCD436 HP. I recently purchased a Diamond SRH77CA but also have a RS telescoping antenna and RS800MHz.. From Sentinel I have added The NYC Tracon frequencies, the RCAG frequencies, the Military frequencies for EWR, JFK and LGA.. I also have the McGuire AFB frequencies, the ANG (from ACY), Norad and NJ's CAP frequencies. While I have heard some transmissions from Norad, ARW , NJANG and WRI I thought perhaps I'd hear a bit more given that I would think there are pretty regular patrols over the NYC area. I do not hear anything on the TRACON sites. I usually am just up in my attic listening.

I also have the Military Bands in my search fields (yes I know there are a lot of frequencies so using only 1 scanner to search even though I ave it broken up into is not ideal). Just wondering if there are other things worth adding to my FL (Andrews AFB/Dover AFB probably out of my range here??).

Thanks.

Maybe some of the freqs in Ron's 9/1 list will be of interest and in your reception range. Click on the link below -

Lindenscanner,

From your general area, depending on how high up your antenna is you should be able to hear:

W105/W107/W108 Warning areas

AR777 Refueling Track

I would also put in the DHS VHF freqs: 136.275/136.375/136/575 (all AM)

Thanks so much mdmonitor (and all others on this forum). I will include the frequencies you mentioned. I do hear chatter on the AR777 Refueling track. I have also gotten McGuire AMW Cmd Post. Just yesterday at about 1:20 a pilot stated they were an hour and a half out with 35K fuel looking for parking space and then mentioned Agriculture & Customs. For the heck of it I put in Andrews AFB and a military airport in Lebanon County Pa since I understand that the higher the aircraft, the greater the range of its transmission and these areas are (theoretically at least) with proper conditions within my line of sight range for high flying aircraft.

I'm in central Ohio Pickaway county any active military frequencies i could listen to. I just put up a new antenna and I have heard some civilian aircraft but that's it so far, I'm about 25 miles south of Rickenbacker

last night 01/02/17 (2020 local time) multiple planes on guard calling Washington Center; apparently there was a stuck mike on 121.37. added that freq and sure enough blanked out.
about ten-fifteen minutes it cleared.

linque to the call sign frequency book
https://www.amazon.com/International-Call-Sign-Handbook-Government-ebook/dp/B01MQWYDPX

(not affiliated wi Teak, Amazon, etc.)

I have a copy of that callsign "book". It's a great resource--as accurate as one can get on the ever-changing subject of callsigns. At $7.49 for the e-version is definitely a bargain. It's comprehensive---some of the Gov't agencies that are listed I didn't know existed or had callsigns. Best of all it's in .pdf format so is totally searchable (not sure that's even a good word).

Guys,

With only a couple of weeks to go before the Inauguration here's some info I've put together that might be useful:

The Coast Guard is tasked with airborne homeland security patrols and intercepting unauthorized aircraft entering restricted airspace over D.C. These helicopters use scrolling banner signs that tell pilots to contact them on 121.5 (122.75 has been used for training exercises), where they are given further instructions. Coast Guard helos assigned to D.C. are known as “Blackjack” because they originate from Air Station Atlantic City. They operate locally from Hangar #7 at National Airport.

Coast Guard
156.8000 s Marine Ch. 16 (Hailing, Distress)
156.8500 s Marine Ch. 17 (D.C. harbor patrol coord.)
157.0500 s Marine Ch. 21 (CG, Blackjack helos)
157.1500 s Marine Ch. 23 (CG Sta. Washington)
162.0500 s [ $293] CG-108
165.3125 s [ $293] CG-121 (CG Sta. Washington)
412.9750 s [ $293] CG-409 (CG aircraft and cutters)
345.0000 s Coast Guard Aircraft (primary)
237.9000 s Coast Guard Aircraft (secondary)
326.1500 s Coast Guard Aircraft (working primary)
379.0500 s Coast Guard Aircraft (working secondary)

The USCG has more than 40 non-marine channels available for use. On the water, the agency will establish this security zone on the Potomac and Anacostia during the inaugural period.
