More freq changes for ZDC published in today's National Flight Data Digest:

Note that all they're doing in the first batch is swapping freqs between Rocky Mount and Sampson RCAGs. For the Wilmington RCAG, they're just modifying the usage of the freqs, not changing them. Since these are out of range for most of us on this thread, it won't make much difference

Early 0900 hour there was a BULLY flight of F-16s that took off from Andrews with TRACON 254.25, to ZDC-Hagerstown 227.125 and then over to ZNY-Middletown 322.4 where they cancelled IFR and went into low level route VR-705.

Around 0930, there's a SCARY flight of Andrews F-16s climbing out on interflight 143.15, TRACON 348.725 and then to ZDC-Calvert 281.4 where they are at 0933. SCARY flight leader tells ZDC they're going to cancel (IFR) around Hopewell. Descending to 17.000 feet at 0936.
0940: SCARY 1 flight handed off to ZDC-Franklin 290.425 and check in heading for 17,000 feet. Ask, "What's the lowest you can take me down here still IFR?" Don't know the reply he got but flight leader says they'll cancel IFR now (0943). And that was the last heard from them.

Second half of 0900 has Langley F-22A flights out in the offshore warning areas with Giant Killer using 249.8. Have JACK and DEVO flights. JACK is a new callsign for me for Langley. Also hearing DOLLAR which is also new. ROCKY flight in to work with DOLLAR in W-386 early 1000 hour.

0946-54: GRITS 87 (C-17A, 437th AW Charleston) calling McGuire CP many times before establishing contact...says they're coming in to pick up an LTC _____ and crew from Charleston...319.4
0958: WOODEN 22 reports airborne at 1355Z...this is a KC-135R, tail 57-1512 from the 756th ARS at Andrews using this callsign....378.1
I'd say he's going west...far, far west.

1003: NAVY 536 flight with ZDC-Calvert 281.4 and handed off to ZDC-Swann 134.5 where he announces he'll be entering VR-707...looking for FL 190 for now and gets it. Handed off to ZDC-Woodstown 125.45 at 1006.
1008: MTN A-10s working interflight 142.3

Have to leave unfortunately. There is so much activity up this morning that the scanners won't scan. In fact, there's so much activity that I had to turn some radios off since there was too much interference from all the activity.

I've been hearing NOAA WX station WXK97 located in Sudlersville MD this morning. It's about 118 miles from my location. Never heard a peep from it before today. Signal strength/sound is much better than KHB36 (Manassas VA 40 miles to the SE) or even WXM42 (Hagerstown MD 20 miles to the N). Maybe I'd better look out my front door and check to see if they moved their tower to my yard overnight.

Brian

Edit - Can't hear it at all as of 1205

1259: Just had a TULSA 1 F-16 flight from the 125th FS of the OK-ANG land at Andrews. They used 349.0 Tower for landing and 322.3 TRACON before that.

A few minutes earlier had a Royal Air Force ASCOT 670 come into the area. It was a C-130 (C3) from RAF Lyneham, tail XV307. All four squadrons at the Lyneham Training Wing (24/30/47/70) fly this model so couldn't tell which he was from.

And now thunder and lightning is overhead so it's time to shut this stuff down.

Speaking of Oklahoma, I'm hearing Oklahoma Highway Patrol thanks to skip today.

And now I have comms on 136.725, very clear on my BC250 with stock antenna. And someone else coordinating with ADW tower 118.4.
1630-Whoever it is, is in a hurry to get on the ground.
1633- Likely some Raptors on 233.525
1635- Must be SAM-50049 , saying they'll go to they're normal spot and the motorcade will go over to 'him'. 136.725

Update on WV-ANG C-5's

Info in the local paper this morning says that, among other construction updates, the flight simulator will be ready for "the eight planes slated to be housed at the base by this September". They'd better get busy if there's to be any chance of all the construction to be far enough along for eight C-5's to be there by then.

That was a BULLY flight of two Andrews F-16s working at Patuxent. They were at the simulated Iraqi city that's mapped atop the Vienna MD and surrounding area. They were working with a FAC on the ground on an unusual Patuxent freq - 310.55. I think that's the first time I've heard that freq used for that purpose. They came off the range around 1045, contacted SOF on 139.9 to give a mission report, used TRACON 335.5 for the Andrews return approach and landed with Tower on 349.0 a couple of minutes before 1100.

Also had RAVEN (report airborne at 1032) and AXEMAN (airborne at 1040) A-10 flights from Martin State. One of them was using 142.3 interflight. They seemed to be working together on a ground attack scenario exercise and talked to each other on Ops freq 143.8 for most of their flight. I guess it was about an hour or so later when I heard them returning home.

Had some foreign visitors into the area today:
0932: Royal Air Force ASCOT 5220 (C-130 C3A, tail XV177, LTW)
1013: German Air Force flight MED 002 (CL-600, tail 12+06). The CL-600 is a Canadian aircraft make by Bombardier.
1134: German Air Force (A-310, tail 10+26, FBS)

From 1051 to 1101 had a FIRST 71 (Langley) flight through the area on ZDC freqs...Franklin 290.425 to Blackstone 235.625 to to Montebello 284.7 to Shenadoah 270.35. During that time he climbed from FL 240 to 280.

In the 1100/1200 time frame had three KC-135E tankers from the 108th ARW at McGuire in the area. They were 58-0032, 62-3527 and 57-2602.
At 1112, I caught a RAWHIDE 03 flight working ZDC-Cape Charles on 256.8. That callsign is probably associated with a C-2A from VRC-40 of the USS Eisenhower.

There seem to be more C-130 types in and through the area than usual today - both Navy C-130T/KC-130T and Air Force C-130H/EC-130J. They're all over the place.
We also had visits from a Tinker 552nd ACW E-3B (77-0355) and an Offutt 1st ACCS E-4B (73-1677) today.

Late morning and early afternoon has had a slow but fairly steady flow of Langley F-22A aircraft out to W-386 with Giant Killer - mostly using 249.8 to enter/exit.

And how can I forget this one....early 1000 hour a KC-135R (62-3514) from the 203rd ARS of the HI-ANG flying as EVAC 23514.

1328: TOIL 38 (C-130H, 85-0038, 357th AS Maxwell AFB AL) calling McGuire Command Post...wants a message passed to DSN 493-xxxx that they're about 3 hours from their destination KMXF (Maxwell AFB) and want Customs notified of their arrival.
1346: DEVIL 41 (F-16 NJ-ANG) with ZNY-Middletown 322.4 reporting in as a single ship flight and reports he does not have weather radar...cleared direct DuPont and to FL 210, course 090. Says he'll be going into the wx in a little bit but should be able to get around everything.
I seem to remember a DEVIL flight going out to Selfridge recently. This may be him coming home to Atlantic City.
1351: DEVIL 41 handed to ZNY-Modena 335.6 and checks in at FL 210 (tries several times, no joy). Finally makes contact on sixth try at 1355.
1357: DEVIL 41 cleared direct Smyrna and down to FL 190...335.6
1358: DEVIL 41 handed to ZDC-DuPont 307.25 and checks in at FL 190...cleared down to 14,000...heading 100

1400: DEVIL 41 handed to ZDC-Kenton 354.15 and checks in there at 14,000 feet...cleared to 12,000 at 1401....to 8,000 at 1402.
1400: DEVIL 41 calling Ops on 138.625 which he is calling Victor-16. This would be a new preset for the NJ-ANG if it holds up....then heard him calling on 139.45 but didn't hear who he called on that one.
1403: DEVIL 41 handed off and says, "Pushing 6" which is probably ACY Approach...
1403: DEVIL 41 to ACY Approach and checks in heading for 8000 feet...327.125
And that's the last heard from DEVIL 41

1406: That E-4B (73-1677) is climbing out from Andrews...I think his callsign is ?DEAN? 77 Heavy...with TRACON 118.95 and then handed off to TRACON 118.675 but I didn't get there in time to hear his check-in. From there he's handed off to ZDC-Linden on 120.65 (Yes, it's still in use) at 1409. That callsign doesn't compute in my database. Since the suffix is part of his serial number, it should be a unit call and not a possible one time callsign. I've heard them using DUMA in the past but this doesn't sound like DUMA.

Weather in the general area late in the 1300 hour. Once again I'm hearing the Andrews CP controller loud and clear. She's telling someone on the ground that he can't takeoff because of the weather. Radar is showing some good storms down around the Andrews area and south of there. Just light rain here.

1425: WILD flight of three F-16s from Andrews off the deck...139.15 interflight...TRACON 348.725 to ZDC-Calvert 281.4 to Patuxent Check-In 305.2 for entry to R-4006. WILD 1 and 2 will do a bobsled and PARs at Pax and WILD 3 will remain out in the area to do some work on his own. At 1432 they're ready to cancel IFR and begin work. WILD 1 then goes to BayWatch on 270.8 to set up the schedule for 1 and 2 to work in R-4006 for just a few minutes and then switch back to Pax Approach for their work at the runway...WILD 3 will work out in R-4006 for the next 30-40 minutes by himself.
WILD flight back to Andrews and landed just prior to 1530.

1501: BANDSAW (E-3, 964th AACS/552nd ACW Tinker AFB OK) to Giant Killer to say he'll be working with 14 Langley fighters in W-386. The fighters will not be coming into the area until 1940Z (1540 local). I caught a couple of the callsigns he mentioned...DOLLAR and FURY. There were two other callsigns but I missed them...249.8
Front end callsign for BANDSAW should be SENTRY 4x.
1538: The Langley fighters are beginning to come into the W-386 area with Giant Killer for their work with BANDSAW...FURY 41 is in as a flight of 3...the other flight sounded like BADE 71 but that doesn't compute...BANDSAW wants those two flights to switch to 373.1...they do, make contact with BANDSAW and begin their ACM activity...249.8
1550: The other Langley fighters (DOLLAR 71 flight among them) are showing up in W-386. BANDSAW wants those flights to work on 292.3.
1550: There's also a HAWK 06 with Giant Killer that wants to work in the test track. He's not part of the Langley group...249.8

Time to quit for now. It's almost unbelievable how many aircraft are up right at the start of the 1600 hour. Transports, tankers, LBEs and fighters are all over the bands. The past three days have been among the busiest MilAir days I can recall.

Ref Below: Dan, thanks for the info but I can't find a reference to it anywhere. I did a Google news search and can't come up with anything.

US Army helo down?

Did anyone hear about the helo that went down lastnight probably after 8:00? I heard comms on the US Park PD dispatch freq about something going down near Chain Bridge. A few seconds later Eagle 1 came up and advised it was an OH-58 similiar to a Bell Jet Ranger. Eagle 1 requested that their dispatcher contact the CIA as a courteousy and advise why the Eable was close to their airspace. A few minutes later Eaghle 1 advised his medic was out of the aircraft and everyone on the ground was ok. There may be more to the story but I didn't have US Park ch 4 programed into my radio so I missed the end of the comms when the Eagle asked a car to switch to ch 4.

Couple more visitors from overseas:
Early 1600 hour had both a Belgian Air Force BAF 618 (A-310, tail CA-01, 21 Squadron) and a German Air Force (C-160D, tail 50+65) in the area.

Re: E-4B

Hi Tin,

Heard this one all the way from Andrews TWR departure on 118.400 through the QSY to ZDC-Moorefield 133.275 from ZDC-Linden 120.650 this afternoon on the way home: callsign was BEAM 77 Heavy:

1802Z 118.400 Andrews AFB TWR - BEAM 77 (E-4B 73-1677) - QSY 118.950.
1805Z 118.950 Potomac DEP - BEAM 77 (E-4B 73-1677) - cleared to 17000' dir GINYA QSY 118.675.
1808Z 118.675 Potomac DEP - BEAM 77 (E-4B 73-1677) - 13.600' for 17000' QSY ZDC-Linden 120.650.
1810Z 120.650 ZDC-Linden - BEAM 77 (E-4B 73-1677) - cleared to FL270 QSY ZDC-Moorefield 133.275.

Without seeing your tieup I was telling myself that this was a dead ringer for an E-4 transmitter for sure...exactly the same sound as FESTR 87 the other day, they have that distinctive sound and are LOUD.

Best regards,

Tony

BEAM BEAM BEAM...yup, that sounds like DEAN. I knew I was close and also knew I didn't have it right with DEAN. Your FESTER 87 from the other day was, if I can remember correctly, 75-0125. Thanks for clearing this one up.
Just went back and checked and 75-0125 is correct. I have no idea why I remembered a tail number over a period of days. Some days I can't remember my name.

1952: QUID 99 (KC-135R, 61-0299, 351st ARW/USAFE, Lakenheath...uhhh...Mildenhall UK)
1957: Royal Air Force (C-130/C5, ZH888, Lyneham Training Wing, RAF Lyneham)

2107: Have a Navy E-6B (162784, VQ-3) just south of Martinsburg in WV on the ZDC VHF freqs. He's flying to the east at FL 350. Don't know yet if he's coming into Patuxent but am scanning all their freqs trying to find out. By 2112, he's still heading east. still at FL 350 and over Frederick MD. Nope...he's turned to the northeast so he's not coming to Pax - at least not now. And at 2118 I've lost him...think he was handed off to a ZNY VHF freq but I can't find him.
2118: Have a U/I tanker with ZDC-Salisbury 120.975 getting ready for an AR op...he's got the block 210-230. He is ETHYL 63, a KC-135E, 57-1507, 108th ARW McGuire.
2121: ETHYL 63 handed off to ZDC-Sea Isle 133.125 and checks in there.....says his receiver is 7 miles behind him. (A couple of minutes later there's an AR op on 341.75 but I can't tell if it's the same aircraft - too weak on that freq.)
2123: The E-6B calls SHADOW Maintenance at Patuxent NAS using the last three of his BuNo - 784 - and says he was just passing through the neighborhood and thought he'd say hello...says he'll see them next week (so, he's not going to Pax tonight)...310.15 (He's up in PA somewhere, not really "in the neighborhood.")
2157: ARMY 10301 (UC-35A, 01-0301) preparing to land at Andrews w/Tower...118.4

Maybe this is what you heard.

Info in the local paper this morning says that, among other construction updates, the flight simulator will be ready for "the eight planes slated to be housed at the base by this September". They'd better get busy if there's to be any chance of all the construction to be far enough along for eight C-5's to be there by then.

Forgot to mention that for a long time MRB tower had been advising ac that the last 2000' feet of 08/26 was closed. The other day they changed this advisory to say the last 377' feet of the runway is closed.

Brian, there was a story in the Westover paper that two of Martinsburg's C-5s were to leave Tuesday/Wednesday of this week for the move to Westoverand the third C-5 was to move July 20th. Do you have any indication of two of them gone?
