That kind of surprised me Tony. I honestly didn't know Air Force 1, aka SAM (2)9000 worked the VENUS callsign too. I guess it makes sense when training such as he was doing per your log item. Interesting. Learned something new today.

Didn't get to do much monitoring today - just a little this afternoon and didn't hear too much. There were F-16s from the NJ-ANG Atlantic City out in W-107 working their tac freqs 138.425 and 138.875 in the mid-1300 hour. Also heard an INVADER JACK 250 with Giant Killer in W-72 using 233.7 around 1400. Also early in the 1400 hour was a REACH 559 working with Puerto Rico on 11175. I also ran across the Northrup Grumman test flight freq 123.2 where there was a DRAGON 1 talking with Dragon Ground. DRAGON 1 went to Patuxent to work area R-4006 and checked in there on 270.8. He mentioned that Saberliner 168W (N168W) would be along in about a half hour to work with him. I never heard the registration number used by DRAGON 1 so don't know which aircraft he was. And that was about it.

Mid 1400 hour has a flight of three F-16s from the NJ-ANG, callsign DEVIL, working at the Patuxent Range around Vienna MD. They're using their 138.425 tac freq.
There is also activity at Warren Grove Range on 283.1;
a flight of A-10s from the MD-ANG on tac 142.3;
and F-16s from the VA-ANG, callsign TBOLT, on tac 141.875

1430: DEVIL 11 flight to ZDC-Cape Charles 256.8 to start their trip to Atlantic City...departing R-4006 at 17,500 feet direct ACY. ID themselves as a flight of three F-16s. Over on tac 138.425, they all report maintenance status as Code 1.
1434: DEVIL flight handed to ZDC-Kenton 354.15 where they check in at 17,500....DEVIL 2 comes back to tac 138.425 after picking up the ATIS report and notes active runway at ACY is 31.
1434: Believe the Warren Grove Range activity on 283.1 is the MD-ANG flight.
1436: DEVIL 11 flight change to U-6, Atlantic City Approach on 327.125 to descend into ACY...heading for 3000 feet.
Maybe they'll start coming to this area again for training. They've been working almost strictly up in W-107 for the past few weeks.
1441: U/I fighters on tac freq 140.7
1442: U/I fighters on tac freq 141.65...flight of at least three fighters
1445: Langley tac freq 257.075 active...F-22A activity.
1447: Langley tac freq 228.45 active with F-22A activity.
1448: ?TBOLT? flight leaving Giant Killer's area, currently east of HEELS, heading back to Richmond at 14,000 feet....238.1
This was not TBOLT per log item at 1512...had to be another Richmond callsign
1449: COWBOY (F-22A Langley) reports RTB to Giant Killer...heading for HEELS at 14,000 feet....238.1
1452: Another F-22A flight leaving GK's area and heading for Langley (missed callsign)

1512: TBOLT 11 flight leaving W-386 and heading for Richmond...changing to "5" (which should be Norfolk TRACON)....238.1
Someone pulled the plug and MilAir went dead shortly after 1500.
1528: There has been a pair of Navy aircraft working in the Pax area for the past half hour or so on Pax freq 256.5...the only ID on them has been 08 and 443. (Turns out to be TESTER 08...still no callsign to go with the 443 aircraft)
1541: Pair of A-10s from MTN heading home...currently on tac 142.3 (RAVEN flight of two)
1545: RAVEN flight to Martin State Tower to prepare for landing....121.3
1549: RAVEN flight cleared to land....121.3
The UHF Tower freq 297.2 at MTN is still out of service per NOTAM until further notice.
1550: RAVEN 1 and 2 report gear down, full stop....121.3

1618: MISTY 1 with ZDC-Linden 319.1 at flight level 17,000
1619: MISTY 1 requests higher when able...is cleared to FL 270....319.1
Not enough info to ID the callisgn...a half dozen possibilities for that callsign.
1622: MISTY 1 handed off to ZDC-Morefield 371.9 and checks in there at FL 270...then cleared to FL 280.
1629: MISTY 1 asking for direct to final destination - St. Louis....319.1
And that should give us an ID on the callsign -- F-15, 110th FS, St. Louis ANGB, MO
1636: A pair of aircraft - no callsigns used - on Coast Guard freq 345.0 mention contacting Baltimore Tower shortly. (monitoring BWI Tower 119.4 for a possible ID)
1638: Guard helicopter 559 with BWI Tower....119.4
This is probably 6559...unusual that he IDs as "Guard" rather than "Coast Guard" which would almost make you ID him as Army National Guard.
1643: BOLAR 01 with Dover CP giving arrival msg...due in at 5 past the hour, A-2, has 80 pax, needs tall stairs and transportation for the pax and also needs a K-Loader for 3 baggage pallets.
1643: One of the Coast Guard helos is 6559 with BWI Tower and says he's going to Martin State Airport...119.4
1647: The two Coast Guard helos are on Marine channel 23A...157.15...using 59 and 81 for IDs.
1648: The two Coast Guard helos are 6559 and 6581...now with Potomac (BWI) TRACON...119.0
Both helos are HH-65 types based at Atlantic City.
1649: Coast Guard 6559 and 6581 change to Martin State Tower...121.3...mention coming in for full stop landing.
1651: Coast Guard helo 6559 asks MTN Tower operator where the Sky Team 11 (Channel 11 TV) hangar is located on the base....121.3

1703: REACH 625 with Andrews for arrival msg...arriving 19 past the hour, A-1, 3 pax and no cargo for offload, needs 180(000) on the fuel and a parking spot...378.1
1706: CG helo 6559 with Coast Guard Baltimore on Marine Channel 23A (157.15) to report he's airborne again from Martin State and heading for Atlantic City with 5 pax on board and has 1 hour 5 minutes of fuel on board....he's then heard with TRACON on 119.0
1706: DEVIL 41 (F-16 NJ-ANG Atlantic City) with ZDC-Salisbury 257.7 checking in at FL 270 (and repeats that check in 5 times - obviously not being heard)
1709: DEVIL 41 has contact and is cleared down to FL 250...257.7
1711: DEVIL 41 cleared to FL 210...257.7
1713: DEVIL 41 flight handed to ZDC-Cape Charles 256.8 where he checks in at FL 210...cleared to Sea Isle. (Looks like the's heading home from wherever he's been.)
1715: DEVIL 41 cleared to 11,000 feet...256.8

End log for now. Back later.

1933: JOSA 401 to Griffin Command to report takeoff time as 0024Z...141.55
Ground station received well this evening. Last week, it seemed they used a new transmitter on the 141.55 freq and the signal boomed. It also had a distinct sound to it but lasted one day and then it was back to the old equipment - or that's the way it appeared. Wonder if it was just a test of something new?
1935: U/I flight with ZDC-Calvert 281.4 at 13,000 feet and separated by 10 miles.
1937: It's AERO 21 (F-16 NJ-ANG Atlantic City) that was with ZDC-Calvert...now handed off to ZDC-Kenton 354.15 where the flight checks in at 16,500 descending to 13,000 feet.
1940: AERO 21 asks if they're cleared direct Sea Isle...responds that he's cleared direct Atlantic City...354.15
1942: AERO 21 cleared from 13 to 10,000 feet...354.15...and at 1944 cleared to 9,000 feet.
1945: AERO 21 handed off to his next freq but didn't repeat it...but...found him with Atlantic City Approach on 327.125 where he checks in at 9,000 feet. (This has got to be a single ship flight. If it was more than one, he would have repeated the handoff freq for his wingman's benefit, plus, there has been no interflight chat freq active.)
1946: AERO 21 descending to 8,000....then a minute later cleared to 3,000 feet and starts fading out as he reaches that altitude....327.125
1952: ?DC 1? (KC-135R, 756th ARS, Andrews AFB) with ADW Tower...118.4 (Not sure of that callsign)
It might be TP 1.

2005: HOIST 93 Heavy (KC-10A McGuire) with Atlantic City Approach descending as he heads for McGuire...cleared to 7,000 feet...124.6
2008: SAM 0836 with ADW Tower for landing...118.4
2011: Sounds like EVAC 10189 (female) arriving at Andrews...378.1 (Very weak here) Heard her mention offload of patients and requesting 2 ambos - 1 to Bethesda and 1 to Walter Reed.
2012: REACH 2112 (female) w/arrival msg to Andrews CP...378.1
2014: REACH 2112 with ADW Approach 119.3 and then to Tower 118.4 for landing.
2023: EVAC 10189 gets assigned parking in 12 row...378.1
2037: EVAC 10189 (male voice) w/ADW Tower on 6 mile final for runway 19L, reports gear down...118.4
2042: ???? 30 w/ADW Tower...118.4 (mumbles...couldn't understand callsign after 4 tries)
2043: Northrup Grumman test flight freq active...123.225
2055: AR-220 primary 352.6 active with preparations for refueling ops.

CENTER 3 might be Fetter 3, which is one of the traffic fleet around the area.

From Gravelly Point, I was hearing ADW ground-side on 141.55 this afternoon very clearly, which is not the norm.

Heard this afternoon 1650-1730 from Gravelly Point:
BOLAR 01 with DOV CP on 349.4
REACH 625 (C-17 seen) with 378.1, and then vectoring on 128.35, 119.3, and 118.4 (as were the others - all on the usual freqs)
CATBIRD 4 (seen) doing a whole bunch of practice approaches.
NAVY RS 304 departing and being vectored west before turning north
NAVY 7C 223 departing ADW
PAT 2402 arriving ADW

Also, a quick visual note - there were 4 Coast Guard HH-65s (the BLACKJACK flights) on the ground at DCA this afternoon; two on the ramp, and two in the hangar.

Here, there, everywhere.
Ok, going to Baltimore in the morning from Reading, PA with my pro-95 in tow. Was wondering what should I throw in there MilAir-wise that is on CivAir freqs...(118-137)?

Maybe a top 20 or 50 of the best VHF's for Military...please?

Thanks!

Unfortunately without a good mobile antenna, your chances of hearing anything milair related in the civil air bands is very poor. 118.125, 125.375, 135.725 and 135.875 are all Giant Killer freqs (the first one being the best choice, although I've also heard commercial flights checking in with the GK controller on that freq, but it's not something I would think you could easily hear on a handheld unless you are in the right spot). If you're very lucky, 136.725 is the SAM interplane frequency - these are the flights that accompany AF1 when it travels.

Probably the best out of the lot is 121.5 - this is the ELT/Guard frequency, and once in every great while, you will hear a mil flight calling - more often, and I've heard this many times, a commercial flight will inadvertantly make a call on this freq, and someone will answer....most likely, your best bet is to program in the Potomac freqs for BWI that we have in our Wiki (and in the database), and listen in between the commercial traffic. Not the easiest type of listening, for sure.

There's a slim chance - depending on where you are in the Baltimore area (southern area being much better than the northern in this case...) that you might hear a little - just maybe - of the stuff that CitationJet reports. He's in Virginia, but on occasion, some of the flights he reports overfly this area and check in.

Bottom line, you would need a better handheld than the PRO95, and a very good mobile antenna to have a chance at MilAir in this area. Sri to be such a downer. 73s Mike

I was wondering how you type all the info. DO you record it and play back or type as you hear? Also what time table are you using? Thanks, Bill

Not exactly mil related but interesting anyhow...

A Continental Airline Captain was just up on 127.700 ZDC giving his passenger speech
about delay due to wx and ATC.Ended with "Thanks again for flying Continental".
Guess he forgot to switch mic from ATC to Cabin PA.That happens from tiime to time.
Have heard Mil aircraft do the same..

Wow the other civilian airline pilots on same then chimed in with funny comments afterwards... Was hilarious moment in normally business like ATC.
"Thanks for the info buddy"
"He was nice to the ATC" etc..

Guess there is one laughing red faced Captain tonite..

Mark

Not as red faced as the guy that landed on the taxi way, unless it was the same guy?

4-3-22. Option Approach (From The Aeronautical Information Manual [February 16, 2006])

The "Cleared for the Option" procedure will permit an instructor, flight examiner or pilot the option to make a touch-and-go, low approach, missed approach, stop-and-go, or full stop landing. This procedure can be very beneficial in a training situation in that neither the student pilot nor examinee would know what maneuver would be accomplished. The pilot should make a request for this procedure passing the final approach fix inbound on an instrument approach or entering downwind for a VFR traffic pattern. The advantages of this procedure as a training aid are that it enables an instructor or examiner to obtain the reaction of a trainee or examinee under changing conditions, the pilot would not have to discontinue an approach in the middle of the procedure due to student error or pilot proficiency requirements, and finally it allows more flexibility and economy in training programs. This procedure will only be used at those locations with an operational control tower and will be subject to ATC approval.

I can only speak to what I do. I enter the info as I hear it in real time. No recorder. I'm not sure what you mean by "time table" but I don't have one. Daytime is much busier than nights but I'll just do my listening/logging whenever I have the time.

1232: CRAB 52 (C-130J, MD-ANG Martin State Airport) trying to talk to Crab Ops on squadron freq 385.9. Ground controller tells him comms are bad on this freq and to try either 347.2 (Raven Ops) or 148.925 (Crab Ops VHF). At 1236, CRAB 52 tries the 148.925 freq to contact Crab Ops but has no joy after a couple of tries. I didn't hear him try the 347.2 freq.
1250: CRAB 52 calls Crab Ops again but this time he's mistakenly on the FSS freq 255.4. That's followed by a conversation between CRAB 52 and someone else that sounded more like an intercom conversation aboard the aircraft.
1254: VAQ-209 at Andrews squadron freq 280.2 active...no callsigns heard.
1254: ?TEAM? 40 Heavy with Atlantic City Approach descending from 10 to 8,000 feet for approach to McGuire...124.6
1257: Flight of fighters (no callsign used) just checking onto the Warren Grove Range...says his playtime expires at 1825Z...283.1 (Those short range times generally indicate an A-10 flight from Barnes or Bradley.)

1308: PAT 278 arriving Andrews and then going on to BDL (Bradley CT)...378.1 (On a subsequent transmission he used 728 for his numbers.)
1312: Callsign for the flight at Warren Grove Range sounds like WEASEL 21 (WEASEL 31 per msg below) which would make them a flight of A-10s from the MA-ANG at Barnes.
1330: There is also a DEVIL flight of two F-16s from the NJ-ANG at Warren Grove Range...283.1
1330: Also hearing the DEVIL (maybe) flight with ACY Approach 327.125 where they mention going to low level route VR-1709 and then R-5802
1332: Nope...it was a BANGER 21 flight of two F-16s of the NJ-ANG that was on 327.125...now they're with Millville Radio on FSS freq 255.4 to report entering VR-1709 for the next 25 minutes at 500 feet.
1334: The WEASEL 31 flight is working 138.3 tac (They used the callsigns so no doubt, however, this freq doesn't show as one of their presets.)
1342: WEASEL 31 flight calling Any Radio on FSS freq 255.4...believe they too mentioned VR-1709
1351: The BANGER pair of F-16s is now at Warren Grove Range...283.1
1354: Have what sounds like MESH 91 (MACE 91, thanks Tony) reporting his climb from 6300 to 11,000 feet and asking for a radio check on TRACON freq 257.2...no reply to a couple of calls. (I have nothing for that callsign)

1408: SALTY DOG 405 reporting in to Pax on "Button 8"....354.8
1409: BOXER 51 with ADW Approach...119.3
1412: Raven Ops talking to RAVEN A-10s on the ground at MTN...347.2 (I can only hear the ground station, not the aircraft.)
1414: Raven Ops talking to the aircraft on the ground about possibly moving to a spare jet...he also tells them they can't get any additional time at the range and must stay with what they've been assigned...347.2
1415: CRAB 52 with Crab Ops on 385.9 reporting 15 minutes out, 26(000) on the fuel and is A-2
1421: Raven Ops telling the aircraft on the ground he's arranging time for them at R-4006....347.2
1424: CRAB 52 to Crab Ops on 385.9 to say he's directly overhead now and will be on the deck in a few seconds.
1424: TOPCAT 2 Heavy (KC-135E 108th ARW, NJ ANG McGuire AFB) with Atlantic City Approach descending to 8,000 feet on his way to McGuire....124.6

Ref below: Thanks Curt for the confirmation of the callsign.

(I'm getting the feeling that the WEASEL callsign is either not being used by Barnes A-10s and that it's another unit, like NJ-ANG -- OR -- that WEASEL has been deployed to Atlantic City. I base that on the tac freq used by them 138.3 which does belong to the Atlantic City F-16s and carbineone's catching them working with Ops on 261.0 which is also a freq belonging to the NJ-ANG. Add in that I caught them going to VR-1709 which they'd never have time for if they were coming from/going back to Barnes. I have no record of NJ-ANG ever using that callsign in the past. However, things change. Will have to listen in the future for that callsign and where it goes. I also heard both the DEVIL and BANGER callsigns at Warren Grove so perhaps WEASEL either worked with them or it's simply another F-16 callsign assigned to the NJ-ANG. Add in that the flights were numbered DEVIL 11, BANGER 21 and WEASEL 31 which also makes it appear they were on the same flight plan...or that it was simply coincidence.)

Ending the log here. Will continue below if necessary.

Re: CATBIRD 4

Hi Mateo,

I think you might have mixed this one up a bit with other transmission items - AFAIK, CATBIRD (C-20 830500) does not use a numeral in the callsign, only CATBIRD. I also heard a few CATBIRD transmissions yesterday, and again he only used CATBIRD, no numeral following. That has also been my experience any time I've heard CATBIRD in the past, dating back to 1995.

Best regards,

Tony

1446-51: REACH 0461 calling Dover Command Post...no joy...349.4
1449: BATON 20 (EC-130J, 193rd SOW, PA-ANG Harrisburg) with arrival message to Baton Ops...395.1

1530: Here comes Langley at last....BUGSY 31 (F-22A Langley) with Norfolk TRACON...370.925

1556: BUGSY is the flight using tac freq 228.45

1600: End of this log...back later.

Remember when I posted all my freqs in the first 50 messages of this thread? I had a bunch of freqs labeled FMT in the 300 mHz range and we didn't really know what they were for. My info was that they were suspected to be associated with F-15s. Well, at 1543, I just heard one of the MILLER F-22A aircraft say to switch to FMT 003, Comm 2. Trying to find them. I still have them in one of my scanners and searching that bank but am hearing nothing...yet. Of course, FMT freqs for F-22As might not be the same as for F-15s.

Great Curt...that'll be neat. I'll look forward to your reporting - assuming they fly WGR tomorrow.
