Unusual visitor of the Day/Week for that matter..

ALBUS 42 arrive Dover 1630 local gave tail as 162782.
Scramble database lists as E-6B from VQ-3 at Tinker AFB.
This is a TACAMO aircraft.
Surprised it didn't go to Pax River...

Dare range

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Am off to the outer banks soon for my birthday.

Am looking for an early present: a pro 96 milair file for dare range and the Va Capes area.

Thanks,

Bob, scattered from message 1 through 50 of this thread, I posted all my MilAir freqs for this area one bank at a time. Go through them and pick out whatever looks applicable to the area you're interested in.

By the way, how is your PRO-96 on the 225-400 band? I assume you're opening it with a PC program but some seem totally deaf and others work fairly well in that range.

0948: A-10s from Martin State active on interflight freq...142.3
0951: Callsign for those A-10s is AXEMAN and they're going to Pax...entering Pax area...314.0
0954: AXEMAN entering R-4006 for the next 60 minutes and identify as a flight of two to BayWatch...354.8

1014: WARDOG (OA-10 Martin State) arrives at Pax to join the gang...his playtime is 45 minutes...314.0
1023: A Piaggio P-180 screams overhead and lands at BWI's runway 33R (Just thought I'd throw that in there since it's dead on the MilAir bands)...119.4
1025: WARDOG mentions to BayWatch that a RAVEN flight of A-10s is on the way to Pax...354.8
1026: Northrup Grumman test flight freq active...123.225
1029: Looks like the RAVEN flight has made it to Pax...they are working with WARDOG who tells BayWatch they'll change to 256.5 for their work...354.8....and indeed come up on 256.5
1045: There's also now a COLT A-10 flight from MTN working with the pack at Pax...256.5
The only interflight freq being heard is 142.3 for the AXEMAN flight so the rest must be using low band FM channels.

1111: ????(Sounded like CAGE) 34 with either Andrews or Willow Grove Metro requesting the wx for CYYT at 2000Z. He identifies as a C-130...344.6 (Freq also good for Wright Patterson AFB Metro)
CYYT=St John's International Airport, Newfoundland, Canada
1115: AXEMAN flight reports RTB to Patuxent Departure...281.8
1121: WARDOG tells Pax Advisory that he'll be ready to RTB to MTN in 5 minutes...256.5
1125: WARDOG tells Pax Advisory he's ready to RTB...256.5
1126: AXEMAN flight to U-4 w/TRACON 282.275 and then handed off to MTN Tower
1128: RAVEN flight also ready to leave Pax...256.8
1128: Both WARDOG and RAVEN flight change to U-8 with Pax Departure ...281.8
1131: AXEMAN flight with MTN Tower for full stop landing...297.2
1135: WARDOG with TRACON for MTN approach...282.275
1140: WARDOG 1 handed off by TRACON 282.275 to MTN Tower where he checks in on 297.2
1140: RAVEN 1 flight of two checks in with TRACON 282.275 where ground tells them that WARDOG is 8 miles ahead of them...they don't have the field in sight yet due to haze so will stay w/TRACON
1142: WARDOG request low approach...297.2
1142: RAVEN flight handed to MTN Tower 297.2 where they check in for approach to the runway
1143: WARDOG 1 reports gear down for low approach...297.2
1145: WARDOG 1 reports gear down and that he's been cleared to land...297.2
1146: RAVEN 1 reports gear down, full stop, cleared to land...RAVEN 2 follows with the same message...297.2
There is still a COLT aircraft from MTN left out there somewhere...I heard him with Pax and then nothing more. He must be operating as a loner.
1151: One of the Northrup Grumman aircraft, (N1)68W, checks in with Patuxent...says he'll be working with (N1)62W and wants R-4006 North down to 3500 put on request for him...says max altitude will be 20,000 for the next 5 minutes...when he exits, he'll go north back to BWI...270.8

I suspect much of the military is considering today a holiday from flying in recognition of Veterans Day (officially tomorrow). I've read various articles that certain bases would stand down today which might explain the almost total lack of activity...no tankers or transports active either.

The NOTAM that took it out of service is gone so you're correct Jack

Now that the election is over, the ramp freezes at Andrews will get back to normal levels. None posted for today.

Couple of runway closures posted at McGuire but nothing else of interest in the NOTAMs for our listening area that hasn't already been posted...
RUNWAY 06/24 CLOSED FOR RUBBER REMOVAL. NO ARRIVALS OR TRANSITIONS AUTHORIZED. DEPARTURES AUTHORIZED FOR ALERT, CORONET AND NETTF MISSIONS. 16 NOV 13:00 UNTIL 20 NOV 21:00

RUNWAY 18/36 CLOSED FOR REPAIRS ALONG RUNWAY EDGE. NO ARRIVALS, DEPARTURES, OR TRANSITIONS AUTHORIZED. ANG AIRCRAFT MUST USE TAXIWAY KILO, JULIETT OR LIMA - NO BACK TAXI OPERATIONS AUTHORIZED DUE TO LOCATION OF WORK. 15 NOV 13:00 UNTIL 15 NOV 21:00

I haven't done much posting the past few days due to a problem with my DSL line. It keeps dropping out. Verizon will be here on the 15th to install the new FIOS internet, phone and TV service and that should solve my problem. I'm looking forward to it for both the 15 meg internet speed and the greatly expanded list of High Definition TV channels than my current DirecTV service provides.

End of log

An active Sunday afternoon as heard during a short stint at Gravelly Point.
1604: -118.95 (Potomac Dep.) NAVY JT 810 departing ADW.
1605: -forgot to write the freq- REACH 0456 (C-5 70-0456 Kelly)
1608: -378.1 (ADW CP)- JOSA 612 (C-21A 84-0076), gave serial and he's diverting from LFI with 2 A-4s on board
1610: -128.35 (Potomac App)- AIREVAC 33117 (C-17 03-3117 Jackson) vectors for arrival
1612: -118.4 (ADW Tower)- SHOGUN 01 (C-20H 92-0375) wants the wx, since he's thinking of diverting.
1615: -378.1- yup, SHOGUN 01 is diverting from LFI with an A-3, and needs customs and ag. Passed tail#.
1618: -378.1- REACH 370 is inbound.

The weather wasn't the problem at Langley, it was the wind!
METAR KLFI 122055Z 34029G36KT 5SM -SHRA BR BKN008 OVC011 12/11 A2949 RMK PK WND 34038/20 SLP987 WR// 60071 56041

5 miles of visibility in light rainshowers and mist with an 800' ceiling is nothing. The wind was 340 at 29 knots with gusts to 36, which is a big problem when the only runway available is 8/26.

Tonite 2000-2030 local heard a couple C-17's from McGuire (prob as loud and clear here) going to Pax River.
First heard REACH 356 calling Pax Ops on 319.400 ,no reply heard.(McGuire base freq)
Then 20 minutes later heard REACH 358 on Pax Ops 302.550 asking if other C-17
made it in and give him a call on their freq.
Rare time I have heard Air Force REACH's going into Pax River.

I thought so too Mark when I logged a REACH going into Pax this past weekend. I've had a couple of them recently dropping off a planeload of passengers. No reasons given of course. I also had a REACH 432 today on 148.925 - the CRAB Ops/CRAB interplane freq. I have no idea who he was talking to while on that freq though since I didn't hear the station he called.

By the way, I read recently that Dover is getting rid of a squadron of C-5s and replacing them with C-17s. There was no timeframe given with it. Have you heard anything that might support that as being already underway?
**************************************
I just read an article about a new type antenna - a Distributed Loaded Monopole (DLM). If interested, here's the link:
http://www.uri.edu/research/tro/NCD_for_Tape,_040604.html

The sentence that really caught my interest was this one....

Recently a 9-inch DLM operating in the 150 MHz marine and business band out performed an Antenna Specialist 5/8-wave antenna with a total height of 54 inches.

[/I]

Rgr Tin Dover starts recieving their first of 8 brand new C-17's latter 2007 into 2008.
Travis AFB is just started getting theirs now at about one a Month.
Dover will be ditching over next year or so older C-5a's and keeping mostly just
C-5B's and their new C-17's.
That was to be the last of the 180 C-17's but the Air Force/Boeing wants more I'm sure..

below from Global Security website....

(As of early 2002 US Transportation Command had identified a requirement for a further 42 C-17s. A contract for the additional 42 aircraft could be worth about $5 billion and extend production through 2011, resulting in a total buy of 222 aircraft.)

Excellent Mark. Thank you. I couldn't figure out why the article I read didn't give that timeframe since the info was kind of useless without it.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow when I get my FIOS line installed by Verizon. Hopefully, I'll be able to get back to MilAir logging. I didn't realize how much I relied on the internet for all kinds of things until it started dropping out last week and became mostly unusable. I probably have 5000 emails backed up in the system somewhere. A few come through - mostly the junk mail of course.

For the President's departure tonight to the Asian summit meetings...

Jack, you might give 242.4 (National Guard Common) and 246.8 (National Guard Interplane) freqs a shot. Both have frequent traffic with 246.8 being the busier of the two.

Didn't get much listening in today but heard some Langley aircraft going to the offshore areas in the 0800 hour this morning including a BANK 61 flight (sounded like F-22A transmitter but didn't have enough traffic to prove it. If so, that's a new callsign for Langley F-22As.) The only unusual thing I heard from them was a change from the initial Giant Killer call on 238.1 and then to 346.6 for subsequent calls. I can't remember the last time I heard that GK freq active. Also had a ?YODA? 41 (Langley). Both flights went out to W-386. Also late in that hour was a DC 31 KC-135 from Andrews with LIBERATOR on 378.1 reporting his takeoff time as 1355Z and being late due to flight services.

Then the Verizon crew showed up to install my fiber optic service...well, half of them, the indoor crew. The outside crew that's supposed to bring the fiber line in from the street to the house didn't show. So I have a wired up house connected to nothing outside. They're supposed to show up tomorrow but it's no doubt going to rain and they'll cancel. Fortunately, my old DSL line seems to be working fairly well this evening for a change.

Anyway, in the 1500 hour there was a flight of three NJ-ANG F-16s using callsign BICEP that came down to Pax area R-4006 to work the range for close air support exercises with a FAC using callsign VAMPIRE. BICEP 11 left early and went home to Atlantic City while the other two (12 and 13) stayed on for about an hour before returning home. Their tac freq was 138.425. One of the F-16 pilots wasn't getting along too well with the FAC and, at one point, exclaimed..."this guy is starting to piss me off."
I also heard a VIKING 51 flight (unknown base) with Giant Killer on 233.7 to enter area W-72.
At the same time, an A-10 pair from Martin State was flying around the area. It sounded more like a checkout flight than anything else.

1829: MAI TAI 23 (F-22A Langley) with ZDC-Cape Charles 256.8 at FL 230.
1830: CRAB 56 (C-130J MD-ANG Martin State) with Atlantic City Approach...124.6
1832: MAI TAI 23 checks in with Giant Killer as a single ship on 238.1 to enter W-386 A-J for the next 40 minutes. Says he'll be MARSA with a MAI TAI 21 flight and a COWBOY 11 flight (also F-22A.) Says he's heading directly for the airspace and will be working freq 391.2
1838: CRAB 53 (C-130J MD-ANG MTN) doing sandbag drops with Crab Ops and/or the drop controller on 385.9. Says that after the final sandbag drop he'll do a landing and then take off again.
1842: Langley F-22A traffic on tac 233.525...it's the COWBOY flight
1843: JOSA 418 reports his takeoff time from Andrews as 2340Z...378.1
1846: CRAB 53 with Phillips AAF Tower...126.15
1851: U/I BATON (EC-139J 193rd SOW Harrisburg) with Baton Ops 395.1 reporting weather at his alternate airfield that has a ceiling of only 100 feet...says it's obviously not a good alternate.
1854: MAI TAI 21 reporting on weather conditions at various altitudes in their work area to Giant Killer...391.2
1854: JOSA 318 calling Griffin Command...378.1...gives arrival message
1855: COWBOY 11 with GK on 238.1 (msg blocked)
1855: MAI TAI flight trying to work 391.2 around the weather in W-386
1858: JOSA 017 reports takeoff time from Andrews as 2353Z...378.1
1858: COWBOY flight leader telling his wingman to not pull over 5 Gs in whatever manuever they're about to do...233.525...looks like they're the targets for the red/blue air ACM activity with MAI TAI

1903: COWBOY flight now switches roles...they will become the chasers...233.525
1903: COWBOY asks MAI TAI if they're ready to go...MAI TAI says they need about 30 seconds...391.2
1905: REACH 693 reports arrival message to Andrews CP...crew of 8...378.1
1907: MAI TAI F-22s are at 24 and 25,000 feet and climbing while playing the hostile force...COWBOYs giving chase...57 miles apart at start of the activity...391.2 (highest altitude reported was 42,000 feet)
1909: CRAB 53 gives course, altitude for after he performs his final landing/takeoff with Phillips AAF Tower...126.15
1913: MAI TAI 1 calls a timeout...391.2...COWBOY still going after them...233.525 (timeout ????)
1919: SAM 0889 in the pattern at Andrews...119.3/118.4
1922: REACH 3318 (Heavy) with ADW App 119.3 and then Tower 118.4 for full stop landing runway 19L
1924: CRAB 52 tells Phillips AAF Tower he'll use runway 22 for landing then turn and takeoff runway 4 but wants notification if winds change...126.15
1926: COWBOY 1 reports "joker" so he'll be heading home soon...233.525
1928: MAI TAI 23 calls Giant Killer on 238.1...(Must be time to go home..he said he'd be working for 40 minutes and that was just about an hour ago)
1936: COWBOY tells Giant Killer his two ship flight will be ready to RTB in five minutes along with the MAI TAI two ship (21/22 - 23 already gone)...238.1
1938: Quick 5 minutes...COWBOY 11 reports two ship ready to RTB...descending to 14,000 feet....238.1
1939: CRAB 53 to Crab Ops to report 20 minutes out, 18,000 on the fuel, is A-2 for HDD fail...385.9
1941: COWBOY checks in at 14,000 feet
1941: MAI TAI 21 calls GK with a flash (didn't report the squawk)...heading home and descending to 14,000 feet...238.1
1942: CRAB 53 reports 10 miles out for the option on runway 15 to Martin State Tower...121.3
1955: SAM 0889 is finally ready for his full stop landing at Andrews...118.4
1955: PAT 007 doing a radio check with Willow Grove Ops on 340.2
