No wonder have been hearing so many Connie/Kalitta flights into Dover lately.

DOD Hires Kalitta to Transport War Dead
The U.S. Air Force has contracted charter flights to transport the remains
of troops killed overseas to their homes.

According to Stars and Stripes newspaper, the contract is worth up to $11
million to Kalitta Charters, LLC, of Ypsilanti, Mich.

Dead American service members had been transported as cargo along with other
commercial aircraft once they arrived at Dover Air Force Base, Delaware, on
a military aircraft.

The practice of transporting remains home to their families on regular
commercial flights drew criticism in 2005 when a family was denied
permission to have an honor guard unload the casket of a soldier killed in
Iraq.

Congress in October required the Defense Department to begin using either
military or dedicated commercial aircraft to transport remains from Dover on
Jan. 1. All remains on Kalitta charter flights will have a military service
member to escort them from Dover to their final destination.

Kalitta will maintain four small jets at Dover to provide dedicated
transportation for human remains. The company will fly no additional cargo.

At least 3,336 U.S. service members have been killed in Operation Iraqi
Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom during the last five years.

The Air Force awarded the contract to Kalitta on Dec. 13, according to Stars
and Stripes, a daily newspaper published for the U.S. military, DoD
civilians, and contractors.

Cold outside, but nice and warm in the car at Gravelly Point this afternoon.

1640: -118.4- VENUS 02 heavy (VC-25 seen) shooting a few approaches. Finally went full stop at 1702.
1707: -118.95- something 093 turn to 360 and then 270 for the climb. To 126.65. I was searching and searching for C-20 NAVY JR 093 off of ADW, but thought about the first turn to 360, and realized that it was off DAA. Tony heard it as PAT, so that was it.
1709: -378.1- REACH 197 wants parking and his upload. I didn't stick around to hear the payload info, but he's parking on 13 row.
1715: -118.95- PAT 2403 is off DAA.
1717: -118.95- VENUS 21 (C-20 86-0201 seen) off ADW and turned to 090.
1718: -128.35- REACH 1197 [a-ha!] (C-17A 01-0197 Charleston seen) level at 12000, and with vectors to ADW.
1721: -128.35- AVALON 60 (C-9 seen) with identical vectors to the C-17, just add 3 minutes. I originally noted this as a C-37, but with very little light, an oblique angle, and a range of ~15 miles, I'm willing to accept that it was a C-9 - not to mention that a G-V and a DC-9 have an identical wingspan!

A quick check of the radios at 1400 indicates...

1400: MD-ANG A-10s on interflight...142.3 Callsign AXEMAN
1401: DC-ANG F-16s on 139.15 and 143.6
1401: Tanker interplane chat ...143.825
1401: U/I aircraft IDs as an EA-6B going to a low level route at 500 feet, 420 knots on FSS freq...255.4
1403: PA-ANG A-10s on interflight...143.25 Callsign CADE
1404: Tanker interplane chat mentions a HAWK 11...143.825
1405: NJ-ANG F-16s on interflight...138.875...callsign DEVIL
1406: 1st Helo Squadron UH-1 MUSSEL flight on squadron freq...292.2
1407: SCARY flight of F-16s going home to Andrews with TRACON...335.5
1408: Confirming the HAWK flights we had a couple of days ago are from Barnes MA...HAWK 11 and HAWK 31 A-10 flights with ZDC-Sea Isle 281.45 reporting final destination as Barnes.
1410: HAWK 11 with ZBW-Hampton 299.7 calling Boston Center
1411: HAWK 31 to ZBW-Hampton 299.7 reporting in the block 26-27 and requesting direct BAF (Barnes).
It's strange to me the HAWK flights are being handed off from ZDC-Sea Isle directly to Boston Center without a stop anywhere in ZNY. Something new every day in this game.
One of the HAWK flights was using 139.9 for interflight which is also valid at Barnes as one of their presets.
1417: Coast Guard Rescue 1711 to Giant Killer on 249.8 says he's on a SAR mission...he's at 7000 feet and proceeding through W107C and A, W-106D and W-105B on this mission...says he's a C-130 from Elizabeth City and the spot he's heading to is about 130 miles out. (he gives the lat/longs but I couldn't copy that fast)
1418: SCARY F-16s landing at Andrews with Tower...349.0
1421: Coast Guard Rescue 1711 told to go maintain comms with Giant Killer on 255.0 and 312.3...249.8
(255.0 is the normal freq to enter W-107 which is his first crossing area and where he should have been to begin with.)
1422: Coasts Guard Rescue 1711 comes up with GK on the 255.0 freq and repeats his message...those lat/longs are 39.52N 072.22W that he's heading to. (By the time he got to this freq, he was fairly weak so will lose him very soon since he's only at 7000 feet altitude.)
1436: Also had a transmission that might have been the Coast Guard Rescue 1711 C-130 but it was too weak to copy...255.0
1437: Sounded like the DEVIL flight leaving W-107 with GK...255.0
1438: DEVIL flight with Devil Ops...261.0
1439: CADE flight of A-10s going home to Willow Grove...with Ops for in-flight report...343.0
1445: CADE flight with Philadelphia TRACON...descending to 5000 feet...273.575 (and they're chatting on interflight 143.25)
1446: CADE handed off to Phil. TRACON...263.125 as they head into Willow Grove.
1450: AXEMAN with Raven Ops...143.8...he wants the SOF asked what the alternate is...he doesn't repeat it but says, "Ohhh...don't want that!" (Loud buzzing noise today on VHF so couldn't copy ground station) (They're also on interflight 142.3)
1455: AXEMAN flight with Harrisburg A/D and say the wx is deteriorating back at Martin State but they're holding for MTN for now...281.525
1456: Bollen Range active...237.2
1456: PAT 462 to Griffin Command at Andrews...arrival message...going in for two A-4 pickups...141.55

And that's all for now.....

Ref Below: Thanks for plotting that position Ben. Wish he had been higher so I could hear him...but if he was higher he probably wouldn't be on a SAR mission.

That lat/long puts the search approximately 105 miles due east of Beach Haven, NJ. Beach Haven is on Long Beach Island about 18 miles NE of Atlantic City, NJ. I used to go to LBI with the grandparents when I was little (they lived in Barnegat, NJ).

I've got to add this to go along with the HAWK A-10 flights returning to Barnes in my last message...

1523: STEEL 89 (KC-135R PA-ANG Pittsubrg), the same aircraft that accompanied the HAWKs to Savannah a couple of days ago, is now with HAWK Ops at Barnes on 303.0. He's giving an arrival message...has 35 passengers, needs airstairs, a power cart, transportation for the pax, a truck for their bags and a parking spot.

By the way, all 16 of the STEEL tankers at Pittsburgh are now 'R' models according to a document on their website with the most recent update being 4 January 2007. Their website is called STEELweb. How original.

(That earlier log of the Coast Guard Rescue 1711 identified himself as a C-130 from Elizabeth City. The Coast Guard asset list I have shows 1711 to be stationed at Kodiak. Obviously a change so corrected my list.)

1551: The AXEMAN flight is finally coming home...with Raven Ops on 347.2 a few minutes ago to report status, on interflight 142.3 and now with MTN Tower on 297.2 to prepare for landing. Believe they were at the Bollen Range 237.2 (log 1456) right after I reported them talking to Harrisburg A/D on 281.525 (log 1455)
1554: AXEMAN reports 9 miles out...297.2
1555: PAT 43 (helo) with FSS...at Davison AAF and wants to close his flight plan...Leesburg Radio is trying to determine if he wants to open his second flight plan...255.4

Done again....too cold...time to hibernate until mid-March.

He could be on assignment at E City or may indeed be addition. Will have to ask Mark C if he knows anything..
BTW there has been a missing boater off New Jersey the past few days.CG said yesterday they were all done searching but maybe they took another stab at it.

CHEETAH 15 arrive Mcguire 0230z,tail is C-130 #2134 which matches callsign and tail
74-2134 317 AG Dyess AFB.req 26k fuel,offload 6 pax and 2 rolling stock.

Thanks for tying up that HAWK callsign..."sometimes we get em right but not always"

1300: A group of three F-22As from Langley on interflight freq...callsign RATS...233.525
1302: LOBO 02 calling Andrews...24 pax to offload...wants Customs and Ag to meet plane...378.1
1308: LOBO 02 in the pattern at Andrews...119.3
1309: BATON ?? with Baton Ops asking about another BATON aircraft...says he understands he'll be off the deck in 10 minutes...395.1
1309: Willow Grove A-10s on interflight freq...callsign UGLY...143.25
1311: Langley F-22As on interflight freq...257.075
1312: U/I flight with ZDC-Irons (can't catch his callsign)...360.85
1313: UGLY 1 flight of A-10s with ZDC-Kenton...354.15
1315: GINZU 21 (F-22A Langley) reports RTB to Giant Killer...249.8
Adding GINZU to Langley F-22A callsign list. Fairly sure these were the ones operating on interflight 257.075.
1316: Flight from ZDC-Irons handed off to TRACON and requests straight in to Andrews AFB..(still can't get his callsign - it sounds very overmodulated and scratchy here)...335.5
1318: UGLY 1 flight asks if they are cleared to the range yet...course 220 directly to range...and cleared...354.15
1321: UGLY 1 flight of two A-10s handed off to Patuxent Approach where they check in at 8000 feet...305.2
1324: UGLY flight handed off to BayWatch where they check in at 8000 feet and request 3500 up to 25000 feet...they are cleared for those altitudes and report no weapons...354.8
1326: Another Willow Grove flight of A-10s on interflight freq...143.75
1330: Bollen Range active...237.2 (This might be the second Willow Grove A-10 flight from 143.75 who are talking about lasing a target on the interflight freq)
1354: BLACKJACK 1 (Coast Guard HH65 DCA) calling HUNTRESS...says he's airborne...139.7
1355: Have an aircraft (believe it may be Navy SD 536) with ZDC-Irons descending from FL 280 to 180 and then to 13000...360.85
1357: NAVY SD 536 (SALTY DOG, VX-23 Patuxent NAS) handed off to ZDC-Calvert and checks in there at 13000...heading for Grodonsville...133.9
1359: NAVY SD 536 cleared down to 10000 feet...133.9

1400: NAVY SD 536 cleared to 8000...133.9
1400: LOBO 02 climbing...133.9
1403: U/I fighters...believe they're A-10s...chatting on interflight freq...140.2 (This is probably a CT-ANG freq...believe it's one of their presets)
1404: Same flight from 140.2 is with ZNY-Dixie but too weak to copy...307.8 (Must be going to Warren Grove Range)
1405: Sure enough...flight checking in with Warren Grove Range...283.1 (Still no callsign heard/caught)
Sure wish I had another 10 foot height on my antenna...it would probably be just enough to pull in these very weak flights that come from the north to Warren Grove. They're low as they approach the range which is about 140-150 miles from me.
1418: UGLY 1 flight ready to leave the Pax area as reported on departure freq...cleared direct Smyrna, V29 as filed...281.8
1419: UGLY 1 flight still on interflight freq...143.25
1422: UGLY 1 flight handed off by Patuxent to Dover Approach where they check in at 5000 feet...257.875
1429: UGLY 1 flight handed off by Dover to Philadelphia TRACON where they check in at 5000 feet...269.25
1431: UGLY 2 checking in with Ops to give status...343.0
1434: UGLY 1 flight handed off to U-6 and check in with Philadelphia TRACON...319.15
1437: UGLY 1 handed off to U-5 and check in at 5000 feet with Phil. TRACON...291.7 (And I lose them after this check-in as always as they fade from range.)
1439: Martin State A-10s airborne on interflight freq...callsign AXEMAN...142.3
1444: AXEMAN flight to Dover Approach...257.875
1445: AXEMAN reports heading for restricted area R5002 (Warren Grove Range)...257.875
1449: AXEMAN flight checks in with Atlantic City Approach and IDs as a flight of two A-10s heading for the range...327.125
1452: LOBO 714 with FSS..255.4
1455: AXEMAN flight checks in with Warren Grove Range...283.1

Break time...it's another extremely noisy day across the MilAir bands at my location...the noise level is especially high in the VHF range and lots of random noise on UHF today.

From 11am today:

==> ATTENTION PILOTS <==

CAMP DAVID TFR TO EXPAND SATURDAY THROUGH MONDAY
Pilots flying in the Mid-Atlantic area are cautioned that the temporary
flight restriction (TFR) area centered on Prohibited Area P-40, the
presidential retreat at Camp David, Maryland, will grow larger this
weekend. The TFR will extend to a 10-nautical-mile radius below
18,000 feet beginning at 10:30 a.m. local on Saturday, January 20, and
continuing through 1:15 p.m. local on Monday, January 22.

See the full text of the notam and a graphic
( http://www.aopa.org/whatsnew/notams.html#7/1280 ).

The affected landing facility is Mid Atlantic Soaring Center (W73).

Because TFR airspace frequently changes, AOPA strongly encourages
pilots to obtain a briefing and CHECK NOTAMS before every flight.
TFR violators will be intercepted and forced to land.

That's funny Paul...just because of the timing. I had just copied the TFR and was ready to paste it when you posted your message. In fact, I did post it but have now erased it since you have it above. It's a little strange that it carries over through Monday. Is Monday a holiday?

1548: REACH 3126 (C-17A, tail 03-3126, 6th AS, 305th AMW McGuire AFB NJ) with arrival message to McGuire Command Post...319.4
1558: OPEC 54 (KC-10A McGuire) calling McGuire Command Post...319.4

1604: OPEC 54 calling McGuire Command Post but he's on the wrong freq...139.875 (McGuire tanker interplane freq)
1611: MARINE 304 (NAVY VM 304) to Andrews Base Ops with arrival message...ETA 1630 local, has an A-4 and R-4 to drop off (two generals)...wants Andrews to call the general's driver Tony at 703-xxx-xxxx who's on the Navy side and wants him to drive to the Air Force side to pick up the general...141.55
1612: AIREVAC 33119 (sigh) with arrival message to Andrews...25 minutes out, ETA 1640, has 8 litter patients, 23 ambulatory patients, 7 attendants, 14 medical crew and several special needs upon landing...will need 20,000 pounds of fuel and wants to know if the impending ramp freeze affects an AIREVAC aircraft...141.55
No ramp freezes on the NOTAM schedule for Andrews but obviously there is one.
1621: Just heard this on Marine channel 81A (157.075)..."BADGER 09 this is BADGER 10...proceed with training now." (No idea at this point who they are or what they're doing - or even if they're aircraft or boats.)

Note: Just before starting the log in this message while I was listening to the AXEMAN flight come home to MTN around 1540, I heard a couple of aircraft chatting on 303.0. At first, I thought it was a couple of ROCCO or TOPCAT tankers from the 108th ARW at McGuire since that's their unit freq. However, they didn't sound like tankers. From another source I've learned it was Air Force 2 and SAM 1079 chatting and that both had called SAM Command on that freq. This bears watching in case they suddenly have a new freq for a function like VIP aircraft to call SAM Command at Andrews.

Monday is not a Holiday that I am aware of.....but if he wants the ski slopes to himself, or something....or, could be weather related...they are forcasting "something" on sunday.

I actually got this earlier....but these Friday meetings just don't allow me to get to a pc to post what I see or hear.

I did hear what sounded like SeaKings going over at about 1:15pm, but they were directly over the building, headed north.

Hi Tin,

I can add another sigh from IAD earlier this afternoon on the way home from work:

2054Z 119.850 Potomac APP - EVAC 44138 (C-17A 04-4138 452nd AMW AFRC March) - descending 6000' to 3000'.

Stay warm!

Tony

Activity on 138.875 right now. Sounds like 2 F-16's. I have it listed as 119th FS NJ ANG. They stated that they have a target and it WAS NOT a friendly. No c/s heard yet. There isn't a CAP up is there?

There's also an aircraft calling on 141.55. They stated they're about 15 minutes out, they have 4 pax and they can take about 4 pax back to Atlanta. I assuming they're from Dobbins. Again, that's just an assumption.

I'm not sure what those F-16's are chasing but one just told the other about 1/2 a unit to the west of the first set of lights, another set of brighter lights just appeared. Is anyone else hearing this convo? Am I hearing it right? I also just heard them give a callsign. It sounded like AIR 21. I know it was 21 for sure but I'm not 100% sure about the AIR part.

MUSSELL-03 is out and about right now, north of Dulles. Kind of surprising with all the wind. They notified MUSSELLL CONTROL to cancel their 2nd landing -too much turbulence and will return to the city. Just heard MUSSELL-2 also but he's weak.

Fairfax PD has their helo up too right now helping with trying to catch some dogs on the loose. I think they've managed to catch one.

1845-ROMAN-35 with Montebello. Flight of more than one it sounds like.
1846-They must be inbound I heard one say the ZDC-Irons freq. There I heard LION-11 and then ROMAN-35. Last I heard was ROMAN-35 descending to FL190.

1854-Someone on Baywatch 281.8, checking in at FL170

Ref above: Callsign is AERO. They're doing bombing practice at the Pax ranges using JDAMs with the lightning pod for targeting.
1856-LION-11 with Norfolk TRACON, switching to 360.6. 1st FW F-15 I guess.
1914-Someone now with ZDC-Gordonsville, too weak to make out.

Okay that makes sense. It made for some pretty interesting listening. I'm surprised I heard them down here. I don't usually hear stuff from PAX with the setup I currently have.

Just had some chatter with ZDC-Gordonsville, sounded like it may be a PITMAN. Just prior to that someone was with ZDC-Norfolk. After all that someone was with ZDC-Shenandoah, maybe it was just someone climbing west out of Langley.

0928-Or not, definitely a PITMAN with ZDC-Gordonsville again.
0931- PITMAN-21 checking in with ZDC-Marlinton.
0947- Just caught them finishing some chat on 138.425.
0949-Now on 138.875, I think this may be preset V7. That's the last thing I heard on the previous freq was to switch to V7.
0953- Might not be PITMANs on 138.875, talk of GCI. Whovever it is has a really strong signal.
1002-TANKER-01 calling HUNTRESS 260.9 female pilot
1006-TANKER-01 cleared into the CAP.
1007-It's a DEVIL flight on 138.875
1008-I think these are the CAP fighters, mentioned passing Richmond. 139.825 and 360.85 ZDC-Irons.
1013- 139.7 will be used. PITMAN-43 will be in the CAP.
1015-TANKER-01 cleared into the CAP. Will be at FL40. 135.525
1018- PITMAN-43 in the CAP. 135.525 350.25 is the UHF side of it, also being used.
1024-139.7 and 350.25 will be the primary freqs.
1027-PIREP, wind from the NW at 120kts.
1032- 228.9 will be boom freq. NIGHTHAWK-2 calling PITMAN on 260.9

I'll be streaming the CAP online today. Potomac Approach can be heard loud and clear.

It's pretty windy up here in Thurmont, would they still try to fly up?
