Shuttle at Dulles

Guys,

Got this off another list:

Info for media re the 4/17 arrival of Discovery at IAD.

Note the mention of the parking lot of the Udvar-Hazy Center as a good viewing location for the public.

Tuesday, April 17

The space shuttle Discovery is expected to fly low over Dulles International Airport at about 10 a.m. Media not already confirmed to attend should contact (202) 633-2370; space is limited. Confirmed media will get video and still photos from the airport at three locations: the low fly-by at 10 a.m., touchdown at about 10:40 a.m. and the final stop at 10:55 a.m., when the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft crew step out to be greeted by Smithsonian and NASA officials. There will be brief remarks at the final stop. (All times are approximate.)

Specific questions regarding the aircraft that carries Discovery should be directed to NASA's Office of Communications at (202) 358-1600.

NASA Television will provide live pool coverage of the orbiter's arrival.

Members of the media are also invited to the witness the fly-by from the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center on its way to Dulles Airport from the Center's parking lot. There will not be a view of the runway; however, there will be an opportunity to interview the public assembled there.

All media will receive an email with detailed driving and parking instructions (there will be no charge for media parking).

The NASA T-38 flight today was N908NA and possibly N960NA. The altitudes for 960NA don't jive for going in and out of Dulles but I didn't log any other NASA T-38s.

Callsigns were PLUTO98/99.

FAA N71 B350 FLIGHTCHECK71 is checking out AML. Currently doing an orbit 17 miles out at FL110. Then they will do 40 miles out before finally doing some approaches into Dulles at 1330 local. 118.95

1105- Must've meant 1030. Just did an approach on 1C or 1L. Now they're going out for the 40 mi out orbit at 2300ft.

Four VMAQ-1 Prowlers returned this afternoon from Lajes as TREND 71 flight.
They changed their callsign enroute to Cherry Point in BANSHEE 1 flight.

Recently their ops frequency changed to 354.350, can anyone confirm this please ?

Deployment tonight

Good evening,

The 169FW is deploying 14 F-16s from McEntire ANGB to Moron tonight, this is from an ANG press statement released last weekend::

More than a dozen F-16 fighter jets from S.C. Air National Guard's 169th Fighter Wing,
based in McEntire, will leave soon for Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

About 500 airmen, pilots, maintenance specialists and support staff also will be deployed for the four-month tour.
The jets will provide ground support for Allied troops in Afghanistan. It is the wing's largest deployment since
Operation Desert Storm and the fourth major deployment of its F-16s since 2002.

In 2002, the Swamp Foxes were deployed to Qatar, flying more than 200 combat missions in the early days of the Afghanistan campaign.

In 2003, the 169th deployed to Qatar in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, flying more than 400 combat missions. In 2010,
elements of the 169th deployed again to support operations in Iraq.

This will be the first deployment for several members of the S.C. Air Guard, but most have completed multiple deployments
over the past 20 years, some going back as far as the first Gulf War in the early 90s.

The date of the deployment was not released but could come as early as next week, the Guard said in a statement.

Hope this is of interest,

René.
