Hey guys, I’m looking for a ~3m whip (9’4”-10’). A CB whip is too short and everything I can find that’s longer is collapsible and not designed for use when in motion.

I can find any number of mil style folding whips and telescoping whips, but I need something that will work at 75mph that I can leave out in the elements.

Any ideas on a manufacturer that can supply such a thing?

TIA,
Brian

The MFJ-1966 108" whip plus a spring will get you to 114" total length. Maybe Hustler, or Wilson has a short mast section that could be used to get you to 120" total.

I see a few mast sections available from Wilson that vary from 5"-22" in length, so you have plenty of options to get to your desired OAL, either with, or without using a spring. Also there's the option of obtaining a chunk of 3/8" stainless rod cut to whatever length you need. A 3/8"-24 die can be found at virtually any hardware store for a few dollars, so cutting threads is cheap and easy.

Shakespeare made a top whip for an HF antenna that was about 10ft, I have one in my garage somewhere. Looks like any other fiberglass CB whip with 3/8-24 thread but longer. Otherwise I've never seen a solid SS whip longer than 102"

Hustler whip section, the one that is used to accommodate their resonators. That’s about 54” long.

Then add a coupling nut, and a cut-down CB whip to that. Don’t forget the big spring for the ball mount… assuming this is a mobile application.

I'm have that setup. I use it occasionally on my Jeep. I have the 54" Hustler MO-3 mast, and a 103 inch steel CB whip. I connect the whip to the top of the mast with a 3/8-24 coupling nut.

The overall length is 157 inches, 13.08 feet, or 3.98 meters. I use it with an antenna tuner. It works well from 10 down to 17 meters.

Not too sure about handling 75 MPH winds. But there shouldn't be much wind load. It could be guyed if necessary.

I used almost the same setup two sunspot max'es ago, big ball mount on the side of a steel pickup shell.
I had a SGC-230 tuner and could use the antenna on 10-40M and get a tune but terrible efficiency on 75M. I worked Sweden on 20M SSB going home after a Superbowl party and worked 20 other entities as well, over about 15 months' operation. I used a couple of nylon twine guys to the front corners of the pickup cab roof to keep the antenna more vertical while at freeway speed. So it's possible.

Beware of overhead hazards if you do something like that. I put the mast + antenna on only when I was on more or less open road.

Many years ago I did some testing with an SG-230 tuner with 9ft steel whip, the SGC 303 dual wound whip and a 40m hamstick. The dual wound SGC whip was about an S unit or 6dB down from the hamstick on 40m and the 9ft steel whip was just a little worse. Although the SG-230 tuner would tune anything and work 160 through 10m even a couple hundred mile 160m contacts at night mobile, it was a very inefficient setup.

With further testing over the years I've found large screwdriver antennas with long whips to be the more efficient mobile antenna if you have them mounted in a good spot and not the bumper or trailer hitch. If you can get away with a 9ft whip on top of the screwdriver it will enhance 160 through about 17m needing much less coil to resonate.

Agree about the SG303. I had good results with a Hamstick for 40M some months earlier, but I had the SG-230, etc. etc.

I had a SGC-230 tuner
I had one of those, it can tune anything from a shopping cart to 300 foot wire.

Had that setup on my Cadillac, with the SG230, it did great 10 to 80 meters. performance down a bit on 160 but made plenty of contacts.
I have an Icom AT-140 on my end fed and great down to 3 MHz.

I just dug up a picture of the antenna setup on an old car I used to own. The mount is just below the bumper. It's hard to see the whip , but there is a piece of red plastic tape tied on the top. (I added a red arrow pointing to it). I never used this while driving :)

Step by step instructions for increasing length of 102" CB whip antenna.
For example, a 10' or 120" desired total length. Meaning you'll need an 18" extension.

1. Cut a 3/8X24 threaded rod to 18".
2. Screw on three 3/8X24 bolts to rod. This will align the threads. Tack weld the bolts just enough to hold them together. Unscrew them with the third bolt still on threaded rod.
3. Weld third bolt to threaded rod. And more welds to the two bolts.
4. Insert 102" whip into the two bolts.
5. Screw the threaded rod to typical 3/8X24 ball mount. Your new total length would be 120".

If you're going to use a 7" spring between ball mount and extension rod, reduce your extension to 11"
