I just bought a XTS5000 off of E-Bay,and have programmed Toms River Police into it.All went well except I need the proper Encry. code # for it.
I'll be moveing to T'River and can't wait to "get in "on all the action!

TRPD is encrypted most of the time. Lately, you might catch anywhere from a shift to a few days of "in the clear" dispatching, but then right back to full encryption. Also, about 50% of the officers respond with full encryption. Channels 2, 3, & 4 are also totally encrypted. Not much action to listen to here in Toms River.

Besides the encryption codes, you'll also need the Astro network ID number.

I think that the only thing you will be listening to is Digital Garble. Though the XTS 5000 will make a nice book end!

Well you might be right on the Police & Police EMS side, But they still need medics at times so listen to MONOC they still have fires 154.145 and they still for the time bring have volunteers for there first aid squads 460.625 so all is not lost yet and also to North & South Star.

Are you serious? Just exactly where do you think anyone is going to get these codes and Astro network ID numbers from to start this data bank? The only people who have them are the police departments and the radio techs, and I really doubt if anyone will get any cooperation from either of them. I would think that you, myself, and everyone else involved in the scanning hobby would have a better chance of hitting the lottery jackpot than getting this information. You really need to resolve yourself to the fact that you're just not going to be able to monitor Toms River PD on a regular basis and move on.

I agree. Dream on O' Innocent Youth! No one is going to give you either of these critical system elements. How can you create a new database when the owners of the data will not release it? Forget the Freedom of Information Act request cause this secure information does not, and will not, have to be shared. If you still believe this is possible, we all can provide you with cost effective shares in a bridge between Staten Island and Brooklyn. I'll even through in the Edsel hubcab as a sign-on bonus.

Even if it were possible to obtain the encryption key you would also need a hardware encryption module flashed with the appropriate algorithm, a Key Variable Loader flashed with the appropriate algorithm and the appropriate keyloader cable. The encryption key cannot be directly entered into a radio and is not part of the function of the P25 vocoder.

Even if you obtained all that - it is still illegal.

As far as the NAC you can listen to P25 audio in digital CSQ and you will be fine (for unencrypted traffic). You do not need the correct NAC unless you want to trasmit on their system - obviously illegal also.

The whole point of them using encryption is that they don't want to be monitored - like it or not.

There are a few other towns in the area that run P25 on UHF conventional channels that use only limited encryption if any - Point Pleasant Beach, Lakewood, Brick (eventually) - that you can monitor with your radio.

Wanna get in on the action, eh? Take the test, get on the list and they'll actually give you a radio when you're called.

Seriously now, a crypto key in most agencies is not a one-time deal. My non-NJ department changes the key on an irregular basis and will change it every operational period during a critical incident. The keyloader is in a safe and the code is destroyed after the last department radio is loaded. If one loses the key, everyone gets a new one. There are also over-the-air-rekeying capabilities.

There are also different varieties of encryption. Without knowing whether it is DES-OFB, DES-OFB with XL enabled, AES, AES with XL enabled or ADP, you are searching for an astronomical number of possibilities. With rekeying, by the time you find the code, if you ever get those resources, they have already moved on to another crypto key.

Read this: http://www.radioreference.com/forums/showthread.php?t=63775. There are a lot of very talented people on these forums. I don't think any actually broke the code.

In other words, I'm skeptical that with all this security anyone can or will share the proper key and that you will ever be able to receive something they don't want you to hear. If you luck out somehow, count on it not lasting.

I know a few officers in Toms River, I've forwarded info to them that their radio system may be compromised, we'll see what happens.
