so i opened it, and was able to find some HAM talk using the preprogrammed stuff but im having trouble entering my local freqs.

I typed in the airport freq which is like 10 miles away and I don't hear anything. Do I need to connect to a repeater first or something? it seems no matter what local freq i put in manually, I don't hear anything at all even letting it sit and waiting.

I also tried local EMS, local fire...etc etc...school buses as they're getting rdy to get going now.....and nothing.....

Am I missing something. I even typed in a local repeater like 2 miles away and nothing :(

however, i LOVE this close call feature. If I press the PTT button on my regular walkie talkies, my scanner will automatically pick it up and tune to that frequency without me having to do anything at all. This is AWESOME as I can walk right into best buy or target, and pick up their conversations without having to do anything. The only thing I have to do is press hold so it will stay tuned in. This thing is pretty awesome. I just have to toy around with it more. Also, I'll be honest. Listening in on these HAM guys definitely makes me want to get a little Baofeng, and my license so I can talk too. Some of these guys sound like pretty decent good hearted guys

I'm loving how you think it's only one person who told me that meanwhile you still come in here being all sarcastic and troll like. You unsubscribed? Awesome!

dude you trolled me for how many days, i saw it and LAUGHED. "bet n5 will really be surprised i have not opened my scanner yet." "i am thinking about opening my scanner next monday." stuff like that. go back through the messages below. i saw them and laughed and thought, this guy is not all there. he buys a scanner then brags about not opening it all week on a scanner forum. have fun with your scanner. that is what this is supposed to be about, not bragging about not opening the box. last message from me, i have scanners to listen to and program. peace out

saying you would be surprised I haven't opened it yet wasn't trolling you. You were the only person talking about using it and I thought you would get a kick out of the fact that i still haven't gotten around to it yet.

Coming back in and saying im thinking about opening it...or that I still haven't done so is also not trolling. I was simply updating the thread of the status. I thought I was going to have the free time to do so. When did I ever brag about anything? I'm sorry I couldn't rush in after it got delivered and shredded the box open like a child on Christmas morning as I have a job, and a life. I just can't sit around all day listening to a scanner. I opened it when i got around to opening it. When life allowed me to open it.

You then came in here trolling SUPER HARD with your comments like oh what's the rush...don't open it, it will be worth money. You trolled the thread just like all 3 people who PMd me said you would. You then try to say THEY'RE the trolls? LOL! Then you call ME a troll. You also never even helped like you said you would help. You just decided to troll instead.

It sucks trying to join a new community which is probably full of awesome people but instead of being able to interact with them I have to deal with people like you.

Didn't you unsubscribe from the thread? But yet here you are again typing away. Hilarious! Go program. I'm done talking to you. Added to my ignore list.

Well,

after listening to HAM people now for a week or so it definitely made me want to get in on the conversation. Having this scanner has also made me want to get a digital trunking scanner such as the Uniden BCD325P2

https://www.amazon.com/Uniden-BCD32...id=1489827257&sr=8-1&keywords=Uniden+BCD325P2

I'm going to be ordering the UV-5R in about a week as my first little HAM radio. I have found a place near by that have classes to train you for your technician test. They have open houses. I think I'm going to start going once I get the radio. I'll bring my BC125AT and my UV-5R with me. There will probably be people there with the UV-5R, and I could talk to others about it.

I've learned to manually program my BC125AT. It isn't hard at all, just time consuming especially if you create tags as it's a pain to scroll through the letters. However, I used the software as well which made programming a handful of channels a breeze.

As for the BCD325P2, I might have to order it, and contact Amazon and say there was a BC125AT inside the box. Ask for a label, send it back for a refund.......hehe. In all seriousness, I really do like the BC125AT though. It really is a neat scanner.

So awesome!

I was at walmart yesterday, and the close call feature alerted me when one of the employees transmitted, and I was able to lock on to the frequency. I was able to listen in the whole time I was in the store!

I then got home about 2 miles away IF THAT, and I can STILL hear them! HAHHA! AWESOME!!!

I am interested in the close call feature. At what distance will it identify a walkie? Is there a digital gas or electric meter on a house you can see it you pick up? I heard they don't transmit very much though.

Detect range depends on tranmit power and antenna configuration and RF background noise. For a walkie-talkie, maybe a few hundred feet. But connected to an outdoor antenna, I occasionally get close call hits from P25 repeaters from Virginia in Pennsylvania. YMMV.

For it to pick up walmart, I had to be at least in the parking lot. However, once I got the freq, and tuned to it directly, I can listen to walmart from my home which is like 2 miles away or so. Close call works best when you're in range of THEIR radios. Your scanner will work from far distances but regular walkie talkies can only go so far. Even the ones that claim they can do 36 miles really ever do 36 miles unless you're in a open field with a little height. The CC feature on this scanner works very well though, very well indeed. It's exactly what I wanted to be able to do. Go into a store, and pick them up, and listen in.
