I think the new models have a lot of attractive features. I think I would like the handheld's display better than that of the HP-1. But given my own budget considerations and the lack of certain features already enumerated by others in this thread, I have no plans to buy either one.

Bigger display +1
Recording & playback +1
X2 TDMA Big +1
Front panel programming +1
No Mototrbo -1

Bottom line: I will wait for further news in March.

As the dust settles (not) let me say I'm somewhat disappointed in the fact that Uniden didn't add a bit more to this "New" lineup. Maybe this leaves the door open to another addition in in the future as they have done in the past. With GRE basically out of the picture they can pick and choose their next moves with little or no stress from the competition.Purly speculation on my part. I am very pleased that given the move by various agencies in my area to Phase 2 and TDMA this new arrival will be a welcome addition to my lineup here. Yes I would have liked TRBO but then again I don't see it being used as a "first" responder system to any great extent due to it's relatively lousey speed. DPW, Walmart, gen. business no problem. For emergency agencies...no. Just my observation, and for the most part I very rarely have any interest in what goes on for the most part with TRBO stuff in general. TRBO would have been nice...maybe in the future. After everyone runs out and buys the new line , tests, beats it up, speaks it up I'll probably go for one.

OK Your a tad behind times with this: GRE was bought out by Whistler Group. Whistler is releasing at least 3 new scanners in first quarter 2014. These will include an updated version of the PSR800, as well as at least 2 completely new scanners. They specifically stated that they will be building on GRE's success in the digital markets, and add things never seen in scanners before which are in high demand by the scanning community. So Uniden now again ha competition which is a good thing, and since Whistler hired the brightest/best of GRE's scanner design team, I fully expect them to again be ahaed of the game with their new offerings. So will be waiting with as much patience as I have these days for the new releases.

Paul hinted about something being realeased in March of 2014. No ground breaking upgrades I was looking for Trbo and Nexedge. The Handheld is a real eater of batteries. Not good for listening during a Hurricane. I will wait till March 2014.

8 hours if you leave the backlight off, the volume low, and scan only analog conventional frequencies...maybe.

In addition to the larger LCD, these new models also have a more powerful CPU and DSP chips to handle the increased load that TDMA decoding puts on them. So, if you're scanning a P25 Phase II system with the backlight on and the volume at a decent level, it stands to reason the 436HP is going to draw more current from those three AA batteries than the 396XT will scanning a Phase I system with similar settings.

This won't be a new upgrade for me either. There are many MotoTRBO, Nexedge radios around St. Louis and yet no scanner company wishes to work on adding the newest technology. Scanner companies are comparable to a cell phone provider who only offers 2G phones when 4g is available. So sad!

It would be nice for a Voice Inversion Capability as well. Also the ability to allow tone out to run all the time, not just while its sitting on a frequency.

Also the ability for the unit to tell you what system is being monitored would be nice.

I also agree LTR tracking via 1 channel would be nice too.

Originally GRE had its outfit in China, but had to close down due to loss of the facility. Whistler Group bought the intellectual rights, physical equipment (where it could), and hired a lot of the original team from GRE. Check out the Community News, and the Radio Shack/GRE scanner threads for the actual announcements that were made.

That is not going to happen in a US-legal model.

what I'm interested in...

...is as to whether or not these new radios receive fm broadcast stations programmable in a bank, similarly like my Yaesu vx6, and fit into my CD stereo spot, so that I can utilize it as an all around receiver instead of the factory stereo in my Ford ranger?

Though this is a nice unit from Uniden, its falls short of the mark IMO until we see what March 2014 brings. That being said I always try to look for the bright side and now Whistler/GRE now knows exactly where the bar is set and what new buyers are looking for. Let the competition begin.

Uniden is not the leader in scanner technology. If GRE was putting out a new wave scanner then I would definitely take more interest. Since in the general store scanner world, a leader and innovator. Uniden is no different then a Radioshack scanner ( no pun intended).

Well, lets see:

GRE is #1!!! Oh, wait. They went out of business.

Then, Whistler is #1. Oh, wait. They've yet to make a single scanner of any kind.

It must be, RadioShack is #1!!! Oops, all their scanners (of recent vintage) were clones of GRE models...and the announced models are just remakes of those old clones.

This leaves Uniden in last place...at #1.

Very cool but think I'll wait

Think I'll wait until the majority of the firmware bugs are worked out. Would have liked to see TRBO decode but maybe that will happen in March.
