Given this has been a huge point of discussion for some time now, I would expect to see some indication it was been addressed. A lack of it even being mentioned anywhere is a concern.

Having said that, I like the latest and greatest tings just like the next guy, if it can be proven simulcast distortion has been addressed in the 436, even though there aren't any other "new" features that I can detect that I don't already have, I would become one of the first in line for pre-orders just to get a new toy.

Yep, I heard NOTHING about proper decoding of CQPSK, which, quite frankly, Phase 2/X2 and Wifi are all for nothing if the scanner cannot properly decode a local system with useable audio.

I will buy both in a hearbeat if I KNOW they can properly demodulate CQPSK. But nothing was mentioned, so until that is proven, I won't be placing any orders until I am assured the product will suit my needs.

Where are you guys getting this information that (a) audio output is not improved and/or (2) simulcast reception is not improved? Because I didn't see or hear that in either the video or the documentation that's come available....

You can bet that if those things were improved they would certainly tout them and make a big deal out of it.

So it looks like Lindsay was sent a testing model of the BCD536HP.

It would be great if Lindsay could do a review on the model that was sent to him. Give us the + and - of the radio since its in your hands.

Thanks

So you feel comfortable saying that because these items weren't specifically addressed in the product rollout, they remain the same? That seems presumptuous.

So that's what Paul looks like.

I didn't see the rear of the new handheld. I hope it has a simply clip like the BC125AT. I custom made a quick attach/detach dash mount that works perfectly with that clip.

not impressed it wont do TRBO and NXDN...deal breaker. Better luck next time Uniden. Get with the times. Nice unit but it only does Phase 2. No good to me where everything is going Trbo and NXDN

Well hopefully people won't get too bummed out too fast. Maybe Whistler GRE will get to the drawing board and build a radio that does Phase II and TRBO and NXDN and then you will have the best of both worlds.

There would be no way that Whistler GRE could duplicate what Uniden is doing? That would not be good business plus they would not be-able to gain market share in the Scanner Market.

As a CEO for a company that is taking over GRE company better know not to change the body style of the car only and not put a different motor in the car. They will fall flat on their feet. No point on two companies making the same wiget. No competition.

NXDN and TRBO are not open source "standards" that P25 is. Even with P25, payment is made to DVSI to use their codec.

Either ICOM/Kenwood et al and Motorola for TRBO doesn't want their technology licensed, ask too much for it, or would make the scanner cost prohibitive, I don't know - but I am sure its two of those three.

Right now P25 is the major format in the US which this is geared towards. When TRBO and NXDN make it into mainstream public safety (other than a handful of customers so to speak) then you might see the effort put into it. TETRA is also making an appearnce now...

Quite a bunch of money goes into R&D, and be sure that they have discussed it - and sometimes the cost vs benefit just doesn't work to what we would like to see.

Aside from that, the first part of the video reminded me of the REACT PSA a few years back (you can do the youtube search).

Once you get into the meat and potatoes, it's cost prohibitive and not as open as it seems. Two close friends that work for two different major vendors in a capacity that allows for such insight has also stated the same. However, like LTR is/was, the market is commercial more than public safety which is the core of the scanner business.

Not a whole lot of people but a scanner to listen to Walmart and the local oil delivery business vs the local cops.

I would really like to extend my monitoring capability to flagships. How exciting!

Hahahahaha...

Really interesting features with these, especially coming from someone who still uses a PRO-51 and a BCT560XLT (both of which still run to this day).

Personally, in my area, there's nothing I need to monitor that involves these new Phase II systems and what not, TRBO would have been nice, but I have no idea how hard that would be to do.

The features are very neat. The scanners look really sleek, kind of like the new Bearcat CBs. Seems like they are working somewhat close with RR and it's good that they put the database to a great use and both encourage/make it easier for people to submit updates to it. Win-win situation. Recording is an awesome capability, if you ask me.

The wifi is also nice, seems like it could be very convenient.

I have one question about that - If you can listen to it "anywhere with internet access," how would the scanner itself connect to the internet, he wasn't to clear. I know it has what looks like a dongle for wifi, but do you have to just connect it to an internet connection and that's it? Wasn't too clear. I guess we'll wait and see!

As the dust settles (not) let me say I'm somewhat disappointed in the fact that Uniden didn't add a bit more to this "New" lineup. Maybe this leaves the door open to another addition in in the future as they have done in the past. With GRE basically out of the picture they can pick and choose their next moves with little or no stress from the competition.Purly speculation on my part. I am very pleased that given the move by various agencies in my area to Phase 2 and TDMA this new arrival will be a welcome addition to my lineup here. Yes I would have liked TRBO but then again I don't see it being used as a "first" responder system to any great extent due to it's relatively lousey speed. DPW, Walmart, gen. business no problem. For emergency agencies...no. Just my observation, and for the most part I very rarely have any interest in what goes on for the most part with TRBO stuff in general. TRBO would have been nice...maybe in the future. After everyone runs out and buys the new line , tests, beats it up, speaks it up I'll probably go for one.

Does anyone else find it somewhat curious that they're backing off the DMA memory push?

Nope, not at all. The HP-1 was released after the XT series, and these two new models continue with the HP-1's memory structure for the most part. Which is to say they basically mirror the structure of the RRDB, for obvious reasons. It also makes it easier for Uniden to support them with slightly modified version of Sentinel, using the same database pull as the HP-1 uses.

I find that it makes perfect sense, actually.

I didn't get "backing off" on DMA from the video I saw. Paul said the new scanners would have an enhanced version of DMA.

It's a bit of a hybrid between the HP-1's structure and DMA.

The bottom line is that if Uniden wanted to retain the HP-1's usage of the full RRDB with these new models, they had to start with the HP-1's database structure as the foundation. There is no way they were going to reinvent the wheel and design a completely new software package just for these models, nor were they going to create a situation where they had to pull/push two completely different versions of the RRDB update package. So instead they slightly modified and enhanced the existing Sentinel software, which of course is great news for HP-1 owners since .hpe files can be seamlessly shared between the two versions. Given the fact that Uniden has stated that the HP-1 was their best selling model since it was released in2010, that was good business acumen on their part.
