The sad thing is you're probably right. They aren't the most creative bunch over there. They couldn't even come up with their own unique model number. Yeesh.

I understand this is a Uniden fanboy page, but seriously though, what difference does it make what the scanner looks like? You guys knows you would be running out to buy the SDS no matter what the design was. It's the functionality that matters. Just look at cell phones...every phone on the market is a black rectangle. None of them are winning any beauty contest, yet everyone has a cell phone.

Yet some phones that are black rectangles are still considered aesthetically pleasing to the eyes and handling. Me being born one handed a curved & contoured back make them eaiser to hold compared to a brick design. Display technology Uniden incorporates is a plus.

May be just me but I'd purchase one of the scanners on the left and right of the attached picture before the middle on design alone.

Jason, have you posted any videos of the radio scanning analog frequencies such the Civilian and Military aircraft bands. Would be interesting to hear it's performance since this is now an SDR based receiver. Really great photo btw.

In terms of functionality, anything that is not a touch screen relies on form to be completely functional! Therefore your cellphone argument is moot - they're all touchscreen. Everything else is about them is fashion/style/individual preference. This isn't the dawn of consumer electronics. Today's technology is incredible, and allows for amazing ergonomics and almost complete flexibility in design and layout. Whistler's design and layout screams cheap and lazy... the TRXs even share the same LCD.

And I'm not "running out to buy the SDS" - I'll be patiently waiting for the (as of right now imaginary) HomePatrol 3 version I'm hoping they introduce (with more powerful audio and 12v input jack, ahem, UPMan).

Milcom,

I have not posted any yet but am planning a trip to CMH very soon and will get some footage in Civilian band as I'm not very familiar with any Military bands in my area or Columbus.

If anyone has any suggesting of known activity in that area PM me and I'll give you a link to send me a hpe file and I'll scan what you'd like to hear.

Finialized battery solution has not confirmed as of yet, with that said, the battery packs (two generations) for beta units have been Lithium Polymer. Which can be molded in different shapes and sizes.

If AAs only last an hour or so, I really don't see the point. 18650 LI-ion cells would make more sense if they physically fit. Hopefully the battery pack is based on them, rather than some oddball/proprietary cell size.

Ah, the trx-1 is fugly, especially with that horrible casing.

Guess you don't know many apple fanbois. It's all about fashion before function.

the 436 looks cheep thanks to the choice of shiny black plastic.

Hello,

One thing I noticed holding a SDS-100 at Dayton is it is noticeably lighter that a 436. This is likely due to the Li-Ion battery versus the AA NiMH batteries.

Are you charging with an AC external charger or DC USB?

How long does it take to charge from dead to full?

If going proprietary batteries:
Are they going to offer larger capacities?
How many years will the model be supported before you can't buy anymore batteries?

1. I've charged with both.
2. We're working on that data now. We'll advise at a later date.
3. Battery solution for production units has not been finalized and we'll advise at a later date.

And about 2 ounces LESS Plastic Housing.

That may or may not be a good thing though. Lighter means it could fall over easier. Does anyone have feedback on how sturdy this unit is when sitting on a tabletop?
