Not sure if I’m posting correctly and to the correct forum, but here goes:

I have all SHP TGs statewide programmed in my Unication G5 and do not hear any traffic from the Charlotte, Wilmington, Fayetteville and Coastal areas. I do hear from Raleigh all the way west. I’m located in Greensboro.

My understanding was the system broadcast statewide. Or do I have to be around those areas to receive based on the sites?

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

You have to be monitoring the site a user radio is connected to hear traffic.
For example, you have to be on a Raleigh area site to listen to C3 and a Buncombe area site for G4.
Hope this helps.

There are some exceptions to that rule, such as you'll only receive traffic for a county from within that county and one over in all directions. After that, you won't hear anything (I can hear Gaston and Lincoln on the Gaston simulcast but not Catawba).

I believe the statewide talk groups (call and conference) are also exceptions and they broadcast on all sites with no need for an affiliated radio

That’s what I was afraid of. So, with them all in a scan group, as I travel the state I’d automatically hear them as I came into the area? I can hear Raleigh and Salisbury here in Greensboro, and I’ve occasionally heard Newton calling a Buncombe car or someone calling a Henderson car.

I’m used to the old low band system! LoL

SHP’s talk groups can roam statewide. So if a G officer is helping out in B, if one of their radios is on a G talk group it will bring that radio traffic to the site their radios are currently affiliated with. Municipal and county LE don’t have that same luxury.

I remember seeing something on the viper website, might've been a PDF telling users to avoid that at all costs because it bogs down sites while they travel. But that information is often ignored.
I completely understand where the techs are coming from. Makes me curious on what they see on the admin side.

Apparently medical units can roam state wide. I'm in Charlotte and have 3 VIPER sites programmed on a BCD996XT. I frequently hear medical talkgroups from many counties, even New Hanover. Guessing med helicopters or other med units visit the Charlotte area and stay affiliated for some amount of time.

That is true. I have locked out multiple hospitals from out east.

You mention that you have all of the SHP talkgroups programmed. But what sites do you have programmed? And what sites are within your monitoring range? The site(s) you monitor will somewhat determine what talkgroups you hear. Not all talkgroups are carried on all sites all the time - it's more dynamic, based on radio affiliation, as others have mentioned. On any given site, you'll hear some talkgroups all of the time, some talkgroups some of the time, and most talkgroups none of the time.

You'll generally hear SHP talkgroups for the areas immediately surrounding the monitored site most of the time. You'll occasionally hear some talkgroups from areas further away. You'll never hear most talkgroups that are far away.

And by the way, you have no control over which talkgroups are carried on a site at any given time. Your Unication is a passive receiver, and the radio system has no awareness of the talkgroups you have programmed. So you're limited to whatever talkgroups are carried at any given time.
