SHP’s talk groups can roam statewide. So if a G officer is helping out in B, if one of their radios is on a G talk group it will bring that radio traffic to the site their radios are currently affiliated with. Municipal and county LE don’t have that same luxury.
Depending on how the agencies radios are programmed, they can roam Statewide. Some radios specifically that transfer prisoners from a county to other jurisdictions for example, can be anywhere in the state and talk to their home county. I do know that radios I had when I was an emergency manager for the VA in Durham worked specifically in Greenville and Morehead City which were sites we managed. But I know they didn't work east of Williamston when I was driving home. But I had specifically had the radios programmed to work in the Morehead City and Greenville areas at the time of purchase by Motorola. So I know it can be done, but it has to be justified in writing.

There are some exceptions to that rule, such as you'll only receive traffic for a county from within that county and one over in all directions. After that, you won't hear anything (I can hear Gaston and Lincoln on the Gaston simulcast but not Catawba).

I believe the statewide talk groups (call and conference) are also exceptions and they broadcast on all sites with no need for an affiliated radio
That is incorrect. The system broadcasts traffic on a talk group only where there is a radio affiliated to hear it. The exception would be simulcast sub systems. Statewide talk groups are indeed statewide in that they have permissions to allow them access to any site, however local talk groups typically only have a limited set of site access in their permissions profile.

There are other exceptions as well. I routinely hear and log prisoner transports from other counties, as well as EMS, on my local towers.

If someone has a scanner (BCD436HP) that is working perfectly with VIPER Phase 1, will anything need to be done to the scanner when the switchover to Phase 2 occurs? Will there be any changes to voice modulation/volume, scanning speed, site signal strength, etc.?

Probably not, but we will need to wait until it goes live to know for sure.

Radio Checks on VIPER Statewide Call...

Radio checks are performed every third Tuesday of every month. All 911 Board funded PSAPs are called on Viper Statewide call, starting at 9:00 AM. The purpose of these radio checks is to ensure PSAPs across the state are able to communicate in the event of an emergency.

Does anyone know what VIPER Radio ID starts with 2026xxx and 2025xxx? I have some comms recorded on my scanner from the other night and am trying to figure out who they are. I looked at the VIPER RID list and that series of numbers isn't listed. I suspect it's in the Raleigh, Cary, Apex general area. Thank you.

Looks like it is listed here to me: North Carolina VIPER P25 Radio ID's - The RadioReference Wiki.

202xxxx - Dept Public Safety - Correctional facilities/Probation/Parole Officers

While there are no examples in the wiki for 2026xxx, there are for 2025xxx, but the whole block of 202xxxx is listed for prisons & parole as @icomic said, but it is definitely in the wiki.

Though scheduled for 9am on the third Tuesday, I did hear them doing checks at about 9:30pm tonight, the 1st Monday of the month.

VIPER Statewide SIERRA4 (TG 52793) being used for fire training by Cary/Morrisville units. Unsure if on break or done, but went silent just minutes after posting.

VIPER Statewide ALPHA4 (TG 51958) being used for search and rescue with Franklin Co in the lead. Not a lot of talk, but it is still active.

Both these talkgroups are active today, still, with same traffic.
