Thanks for the info on the Troy faceplate for the 710A. I know a lot of people will appreciate it. I think in the meantime we should start a pool to see as to when we think this thread will break 1000 replies.

For anyone looking to mount a tablet in their vehicle I would like to SERIOUSLY recommend the Pro-Clip series of mounts, this thing is gorgeous and built like a tank. Slim line, low profile and locking (like that part really helps), anyway.... Received the Pro-Clip and immediately voided the warranty by drilling a new hole in it but, HEY they probably never dreamed that their product would be used like this.

Removed the old RAM mount for the Toshiba Thrive tablet and bolted up the mount for the Microsoft Surface Pro, then slid it in and hooked it up!

Much better than the original RAM / Havis system!

There are only a couple of things left and then I will take a respite (really, I'm waiting for the next generation of "TOY" to come out so I can tinker with it, BUT that is why the system is wired like it is, modular, so it can be expanded and modified easily. That was something I learned years ago working on ICBM's because: modifications, repairs and retro-fits were common. On systems that were modular the retro-fit was easy, on the systems that weren't designed to be upgradable the modifications were time consuming and costly. I learned from other people's mistakes (Corps of Engineers) but the contractors used terminal boards and cannon plugs (Sylvania, Rockwell, & Boeing). Those systems were designed in the 50's and are still plug & play well into the 21st century.

It's easy to see where I get my inspiration for the things I create in this truck. This was my home and job for many years, made quite an impression on a 19 year old kid.

In Tennessee, watching Oklahoma with envy. Have to work tomorrow so not enough time to get there - chase - get back. Saturday is looking good in AR though.

There are several programs that glean the RADAR directly from the National Weather Service.

For Windows based systems the leader is a program from Gibson Ridge called GR Level 3. It sacrifices resolution for bandwidth and is available for a one time fee of about $80.

http://www.grlevelx.com/grlevel3/

GR Level 2 is very high resolution and runs about $250

GRLevel2 Main Page

On devices running Android OS there is Pykl3 which is developed by a NWS meteorologist and is available for a one time fee of $9.99

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.MyPYK.Radar.Full

On devices running iOS like i-pads & i-phones the system of choice is RADAR Scope available for a one time fee of $29.99.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/radarscope/id432027450?mt=12&ls=1

I have them all in one device or another and my personal favorite is the Pykl3. For detailed analysis the GR Level 2 is awesome but it takes a long time to master.

I also have a data subscription that give me lots of extra feeds for all of the programs that I run. I have it mostly because it doesn't get bogged down on busy days. $10 a month from AllisonHouse.com

Does the glossy screen bother you at all as far as glares making it hard to see what's on the screen of the Surface? Noticed it in the photos...wondering if an anti-glare protector (quality one) would be helpful or not (some of those anti-glare ones are tricky and do more harm than good...which I'm sure you well know).

The windows are tinted and it helps a LOT. I'm hesitant to use an anti glare screen because they are so directional and I want folks in the vehicle to see the display clearly.

So far I have not had a glare issue with the Surface Pro.

Gotcha. I agree - I certainly wouldn't install one unless I had to!

By the way - it looks great mounted! You're right - ProClip is the way to go...awesome holders and mounts for all kinds of devices and all sorts of vehicles!

Radar Scope is also available for Android. I run both on my Droid RAZR and I sometimes find myself bouncing back and forth between the two.

I do the same on my Droid Bionic and on my Toshiba Thrive. Though I bounce occasionally I stick mostly with the Pykl3.

The top screen is an AvMap G6 GPS unit that will not only tell me where I am, it's hooked to the HAM radio so it will tell YOU where I am:

WX4EMT-9 Location

This is a system called Automatic Position Reporting System or "APRS".

And if you have a similar system it will show me where YOU are on the screen in real time and plot a course for me to intercept you and update every time you move. Here's Don W6GPS to show you how it works:

The Microsoft Surface Pro is fed by a Cradlepoint COR IBR-600 LE-VZ mobile hotspot that gives me 4G just about everywhere.

This phase of the install where I changed from an AirCard mess to the COR can be found here:

so you did not like the ram i was thinking about getting one for my gmc jimmy

I DID like the RAM mount, AND it did work great for the newer Surface Pro.... but.. the Proclip mount is a lot thinner and just has better ergonomics when attached to the dash. The RAM is still in service to hold the Toshiba Thrive in instances where I want both displays one for RADAR one for video stream. etc. The RAM will go back to being mounted to the Jotto laptop mount post. when the need arises.

Just add this:

To this:

Proclip2.jpg

You'll notice the 1.5" ball adapter is still in place to the right of the console beside the passenger's seat.

The "new" tablet mount is bolted to the "old" Havis dash mount bracket:

I think the new one looks a little better:
