Whew! What a whirlwind - three days of this stuff backed up. Not sure I want to deal with that again. I'll have to try and stay more on top of this stuff or just skip missed days. Anyway, there ya go fellas!

Glad you're feeling better dude. I appreciate all your hard work.

44.580 BNSF Hi Rail system heard was 2 bars here a bit odd as entire band was dead except this station !Was dark here i scanned entire band nothing but this freq.was active.Angelo :)
Does the BN run near you? You may be in reasonable proximity of a HLCS base station to hear it directly. Looking at my logs over the last few days as I posted on page 55, it is definitely tapering off for the moment here as well.

I still find the 6-base-per-license rule amusing
I agree. The form 601 is now about 25 years old. Probably created in simpler times when there were no statewide trunk systems with 300+ stations. Maybe an attempt to bring some efficiency to the government will include some work at the FCC.

BTW on call signs: Originally when the FCC began issuing licenses, they parceled the second letters of the call sign alphabet across their ten districts. The districts were similar to the amateur call areas we have today (0-9). So the zero area got call signs KAxxxx through KCxxxx etc and the 9 call area got KSxxxx through KWxxxx or so. Remember Dragnet with the KMAxxx call sign?

Call signs had a meaning. KA1234 meant a mobile-only license, KAA12 was a operational fixed station such as microwave, KAA123 was a land mobile fixed license. The first CB licenses had the FCC district office # plus a letter and 4 numbers. A Minnesota CB license was 16W1234. The FCC got in trouble with the ITU for using callsigns out of the US's allotment (K,N,W, and Part of the A's). Then they changed CB to KAA1234 eventually KAAA12345.

The two way license scheme ended with the advent of the 574 form in the 1970's. The FCC began assigning calls in the K alphabet in sequential order. Not reusing expired or cancelled call signs they ran out of K's in the late 80's early 90's. Now they are close to running out of the W's. My guess is they will reassign unused K's. That would be a good time to increase the number of fixed stations on a license beyond 6 to conserve call signs.

I agree. The form 601 is now about 25 years old. Probably created in simpler times when there were no statewide trunk systems with 300+ stations. Maybe an attempt to bring some efficiency to the government will include some work at the FCC.

That's a great history lesson. I remember filling out the old carbon copy FCC Form 574s on a typewriter. You had to order the forms from the FCC and have them sent via US Mail. Each fixed station had their own call sign. Mobiles could use the base call sign only if it was a closed system with only one base station, otherwise you needed a mobile call like KU-4924 then each base station and fixed station (repeater control station, et al) needed their own FCC Form 574 and call letters. Horribly inefficient but radio systems were a lot simpler back then. In today's age, the smartest thing the FCC could do is give each system a call sign and allow them an unlimited number of stations under that call. The licensee would be responsible for adding and deleting stations as necessary and every fixed point would need to be listed, but ONE CALL SIGN, even for statewide or regional systems. What we have now makes no sense. And YES, start re-issuing those legacy 3x3 calls that have been expired for 40 years. Heck, create a vanity system where users can get their old calls back for an additional fee. If the call is available, it's assignable.
