It's more complicated than that. Those groups that are system-wide, and those groups with users affiliated to that site will be heard on that site. Others will not. To hear all you can your programming is correct (scanning all sites within range).

Thank you Voyager that answers that perfectly. I guess I will be moving on to more fun with my 536. Going to try discovery and some other fun things this thing can do. I will have to post my next issues , not many I hope in a new thread if I can find it already posted here. Thanks again for everyone's help. learned a lot by doing it. This thread can be closed if need be...

One post to me mentioned that TGID can come from any site ? Is that really true?
No one site controls the TGID frequencies or listed anywhere in RR ?

For a statewide system such as Illinois, it all depends on how the system administrator configures the system. In some cases, talkgroups are assigned to a site as their "Home" site (the one they prefer to use). A talkgroup may be allowed to affiliate with another site if the radio roams away from that home site. Conversely, the talkgroup may be denied from affiliating with sites other than its home site.

While this is important to the radio user - knowing where a radio will and will not "work", for scanner users it isn't.

Keeping it really simple, a scanner "knows" which talkgroups you are interested in hearing. The scanner checks all the sites it receives to see if these talkgroups are active. If so, you hear them.

An additional data point...even if a TGID is allowed statewide, it will only be carried on a particular site if a radio set to that TGID is affiliated on that site. In other words, if there are no radios in the area to receive the traffic, the site won't carry the traffic.

One more additional data point...a TG can be "Requested" or "Critical" (in the Motorola world at least) and still be carried on a site even though no radio is affiliated to that TG at that site. Not used much, but still possible.

I now return you to your regular scanning...
