It shows in my computer as removeable drive. It installs as the bcd436. The removeable drive, however, shows as blank. Normally it would show free space. This does not.

Sure, no problem! Weekends are usually pretty nuts for me (I have my kids from marriage number 1 most weekends) but I'll try to get on occasionally and see if I can help you figure this out. I've spent many years in various IT support roles, so troubleshooting computer problems is something I've become pretty good at. ;)

Edit: Just read your second-to-last post. I suspect driver conflicts/issues. Since the scanner was intended to talk to a Windows PC, I'd start there on your Toshiba and see if Device Manager might offer some clues. Connect up your scanner and then take a peek inside Device manager and see if you see any yellow exclamation icons next to anything. Also, did you install the Uniden Serial Drivers found here: http://info.uniden.com/twiki/bin/view/UnidenMan4/BCD436HP ?? If yes, try uninstalling. If no, try installing. Also, try different USB ports on the Toshiba just to be sure it's not a bad port or something. I have a couple of ports on my laptop that for whatever reason don't like some devices. I could try to figure it out one day but I'm lazy so I just use a different port. :p

It happened one time with my 536. I pulled the card out and formatted a new 16gb SanDisk Ultra (the red and grey one) and i haven't had any more problems.

For those of you running Parallels on Mac, it appears there is an issue when the Mac attempts to mount the drive, it gets corrupt. If you set it so the scanner always connects to windows (hold down alt when you pick what to connect to) the mac won't attempt to mount. It appears Mac 10.9 has an issue mounting USB 3.0 card readers. Several manufacturers have firmware updates for their products to resolve the issue. I am trying to create mac software to program the scanner, but I can't even get the drive to mount to get to the files.

Ahhh... the fog is lifting...

N2MWE, you said you can get the scanner to work but you have to reformat the card each time. Do this - get it working again (if not already) and DO NOT connect it to the Mac. Instead, connect it to the Toshiba only and see if it still wants you to format it or not. If not (and all is working normally) than the post above describes what the probable cause of the issue is, along with a work-around for now until Uniden can release a firmware update to address the issue.

Can anyone else with a Mac see if the SD card mounts? CAUTION: If you experience what I am seeing the card may have to be reformatted. I format the card on a PC and all is well. If I plug it into the Mac, I can see it in Disk Utility, but it doesn't mount. I am not sure if it the card or if is using the scanner as a card reader. Like I said in my previous post, I saw Sandisk and Kingston both have firmware updates out to get their readers working with 10.9.

I'm kind of curious how an issue with the Mac OS and virtual machine software is supposed to be fixed by a firmware update to the scanner.

Because the scanner is the card reader for the computer (see post above about Kingston and sandisk putting out updates for their readers)

But I have 2 Macs running 10.9.2, virtual machine software to program radios, USB 3.0, a 536 and a 436. I program the scanners directly with the supplied cable. I have no issues. Does this mean I already have this firmware update? Or, more likely, is the problem not with the scanner firmware?

Lol I have no idea... I was just answering why a firmware update on the scanner might be needed...

I have a dell with built in sd card reader. I use a Moto adapter to get my micro sd that came with scanner into the computer. I then open sentinel and all works... I haven't used the cable to hook directly to the computer.

This can be a classic windows problem - stemming from two possible issues 1) drive encryption is messing it up 2) the drive letter getting assigned to the the device gets locked up

You ever try with a different PC to see if this solves the problem

Kelly, I tried with two Macs and a Windows Toshiba, It drives me nuts. I'm going to play around on the Toshiba again and see what happens.

This indicates that the problem is not caused in any way by the scanner in regards to OS X 10.9.2. The issue is most likely caused by the configuration of the virtual machine software that is being used - that is something that only the end user can resolve, as it is impossible for anyone else to exactly duplicate the environment.

If the scanner was at fault this issue would be affecting the vast majority of owners rather than the vast minority. That is not meant to diminish the issue for those that are affected, but rather to focus the attention in the proper direction - with the system(s) that are being utilized.

It's disingenuous to blame Uniden, the scanner, Sentinel software or the SD card UNLESS the issue with that SPECIFIC scanner can be duplicated on EVERY MACHINE that it is connected to. This requires connecting to a computer other than the ones that are normally utilized by the scanner owner. While this troubleshooting may seem burdensome, the unique nature of the issue demands it.

It seems I will be holding onto my Toshiba for awhile until I figure out why the scanners do not like Parallels. I finally have both scanners recognized and running in Sentinel on the Toshiba. Firmware in the 536 updated. Thank you to all who chimed in and threw out suggestions! Happy scanning and 73

This is probably the secret as to why some can use virtualized PCs with an x36HP on a Mac and some can't. If your virtual environment (Parallels, for example) is set to always take control as soon as USB sees a x36 then MacOS 10.9 can't mess with the card.

For me, I just gave up after hassling with these kind of issues for years and stumbling hard with all my Unidens after upgrading to MacOS 10.9. I was thinking I should upgrade the Windows version on my Mac (still have XP there) but instead I bought a cheap Dell laptop for not a lot more than a new copy of Windows 7 or 8 and just use it for scanners and a couple other PC only applications. I've had no issues with the cards after I quit connecting to the Mac and began using only the Dell with Windows 8.1, so I'm not gonna mess with trying it again on the Mac to see if the comment in the first paragraph here is correct.

Anybody know what chipset Uniden is using for the Mass Storage so maybe we can find a new driver? MacOSX has no issue talking to the 536HP when it's in serial mode, just corrupts the SD card in Mass Storage mode.
