Hi Bryan_Herbert and all people DX'n
regarding 1700khz..I'm hearing ( 9:45 PM ) a simulcast of the Padres game also heard on XX 1090.
This XX1090 is the same station basically as years ago XERB home of Wolfman Jack in those days. Went to the transmitter site in 1967...it was in Rosarita, Baja CA. In a steel quanset hut, and I swear..the jackrabbits were runnin in and out , hitting the exposed copper conductors, a'poppin and crackin'. They were runnin 250,000 watts..and the headlights on the cars parked nearby glowed from all the RF. The people working in the transmitter building had to be driven away a few miles to rest, and clear their heads every few hours!!! They started looking like they were experiencing "diabetic shock-like"symptoms, and then I'd see em being thrown into the cars..and driven away. Soon they'd return, ready to go back to work. Sounds crazy..but I really saw it!!!
Havent heard this simulcast on 1700 ever before..the only other sports format stations are located in Texas and Iowa. at 1KW power each.
So..the "jury is out" on what in the heck we're hearing on 1700.

On 1700 I'm getting mostly KVNS out of Brownsville TX, classic rock, with a decent enough signal. Sports radio underneath, either KBGG Des Moines IA, or WJCC Miami Springs FL. No id yet for either. Not much on 1700 at all!

radio-locator search for 1700

250,000 watts! Imagine that! I wish we had the MW band my Dad Dx'ed on his Knightkit SpanMaster (which I have now, rescued from the attic)

CLynch7 That Knight SpanMaster was the first one I built!!
It's a keeper for sure...and was pretty decent for the time and price, too. . A ham friend of mine gave me a Hallicrafters S-38 when I was around 8yrs old...And I still have it, too. With those radios and a longwire in Taft, CA one could do AM Dx'ing pretty decently..but there were nowhere near the number of stations interfering with each other.
It was fun to explore all the bands (SW) and since Edwards AFB and such was nearby, There was a
huge amount of Military Air Traffic on SW too; we could hear 'em flight testing stuff like the X-15 and
all the other "pre spaceflight" prototypes. Exciting times!!
Wish you could have been around there then. There was so much more on the bands . Cold War days..we felt like "spys" or something.
Speaking of AM DX tho...can you receive any of the Am "propaganda stations beamed to Cuba?
Heard some of those while in Louisiana 'couple years ago. Just wonderin'.

Ridgescan....that was my typo..it's 870khz for WWL!! not 770. Long Day.
The "bleed" of Michael Savage is from KKOB in New Mexico, which ain't a bad catch in itself.
By the way...can you hear WSM Nashville on 650 KHZ??
So many years they were dominant and "clear channel"...We could hear the "Opry" practically every Sat nite here in CA. But...now I have KSTE at 50KW here in SAC, so no more WSM. OR does KSTE
"hog" it for you, too???
Try 1030 KTWO Casper Wyoming.they run a great "all night truckin show".. or actually heard KSTP 1500 in Minnesota the other nite!!
and 1040 WHO Des Moines was readable the other nite, too. Check 'em out!!! Curious to know how ya hear 'em from your '20"..you're about 80 miles by crow from me.
You must have a better shot over the Rockies than I do here at the coast because I can't get further than Denver-it seems like you are in a good path to get the midwest!:) That is cool stuff I am going to try those.

Thank you for the ID, ive been trying to figure out who this is but im hearing two other stations on top of them. im also picking up a talk radio station on 1700 at night that likes to drift off frequency so im having to tune between 1698 and 1702 to continuously listen. I was also hearing a station last night on 1130 that kept IDing as Bloomberg Radio, listened for almost 45 minutes but no station ID, just Bloomberg Radio.
I get these guys on 1700
.: SAN DIEGO 170OAM - THE TALK OF SAN DIEGO :. and they are very strong up here.

I have an SX-88 on the operating table-when that baby was running it had a gorgeous MW quality-I long for the day when it runs again. I'm glad you are in here Charlie you are the MW-DX king:) cool stories and catches.

Have a howdy!!
Love the SX-88 !!! Long live the "boat anchors" I say. Even love the way they smell when ya fire 'em up
after a little storage...slight burning smell from the dust on the tubes and hot caps, etc, huh??!!
The little light bulbs in the tuner display made for great nightlights, as well as the tubes glowin.
I remember my momma sayin.."are you gonna turn that thing off and go to bed? " I said "yea, I guess"
but really meant 'not really plannin' on it.
Sorry..but can't help gettin "off topic"a bit,
By the way, KTWO 1030 Casper WY runs "coast to Coast AM" 'til 2:00 AM our time, but used to run the "Truckin Bozo" all night truckin thing overnight for years. There's a big 'ol Mexican powerhouse in there with it sometimes..but ya should be able to hear it, Ridgescan!!!
Gotta do some work..but will be huntin Dx later.

Ohhh yeahhh, now I remember 1700. I still cant find a license for them. There is a license issued to the City of San Diego though on 1700 but I think its for a HIN. So im starting to think this 1700 is also in Mexico, but why rebroadcast XX1090? Part time sister station?

btw two more loggings

Hey Bryan-from what I observed last night it's the other way around-1090 was carrying the game and it was being simulcast on 1700. My link for 1700 a few posts ago is the station I hear here and it is a strong one.

XX1090 has been carrying sports programming for years and was, maybe still is, located in Mexico. 1700 was originally all talk radio and just recently approved for sports programming. At 0600 PDT yesterday morning I noted 1700 audio stopped and just a carrier continued. Dont know if this was a technical issue or what but 1700 is a fairly weak signal here in the bowl while 1090 remains strong.

Been checkin' out the "graveyard fregs" from Sac CA and for the last hour..they've been hoppin.
Heard a good 60's oldies station at 1400 Khz . Had the freq all to themselves for awhile. Automated,
usually runnin ID between 'tunes..but didn't get it ( of course) always a slight fade right then, of course.
Could be one of two in Washington at 1KW, or one in Oregon at 950 watts. Or? Might pay to keep an
ear on the "graveyards" these nights. They're settling down a little now..but ya never know, they can open up with a big surprise unexpectedly.
PS: Weird about the XX 1090 and the simulcast at 1700;..same market so I give up..what gives??

Come to think of it..I worked at a couple stations in the past ( way, way past) that had recently
acquired another local station holding..and we did run same programming just to be "on air" until
format was decided and re-decided. Just a thought. Worked one station in San Luis Obispo (KATY)
that was part-time simulcast both AM and FM side..and 'tother time ya had to do a seperate show
on both of 'em at the same time!!!! I swear!!! The AM control board was in front of ya, the FM board was to your left. Was ok 'til ya ran out of music on both at the same time. Hadda work like a one-legged grape stomper. In a nutshell..a whole buncha stuff we hear on the air don't make a lot of sense.

Wow bryan_herbert what a night for ya..sounds almost like the "old days"!!
Just a note KSRO 1350 Santa Rosa CA just barely makes it into Sacramento now and then. ( 77 miles crow from here.)
And...KUZZ (Bksfld) was my first "paying" radio job. At the time, was located in an old theater building in Oildale ( north of Bakersfield and across the Kern River. The building became Buck Owens' recording studio in the 60's. ..and so very very many historic recordings were done right there.
( it was an old theater..great acoustics). Was across the street from my school..so as soon as school was out for the day, I practically lived there.
Really great DX log...thanx for sharin'!!

Had 'em last winter many times...good to hear 'em again. On the 909 loopstick only, no less.
Slogan is:" ESPN voice of the twin cities" comin out of the news on the hour.
Good sign...whole lotta upper midwest stuff heard last year about this time.

Ridgescan, believe it or not all im using is a Grundig G6 with the built in ferrite bar. Im on a fixed, disability income so i dont have much money, bought it as a birthday present to get back into the hobby after my ex made me sell all my gear a few years back.

We had a line of severe thunderstorms move through just before 4am this morning. Before the cell moved out I turned the radio on and started tuning. Right off the bat 770 KKOB in Albuquerque, NM came booming through. I took an hours worth of notes and got some audio. I doubt they QSL but im gonna try, at least get a bumper sticker out of it.

Both the International Radio Club of America and the National Radio Club are very well known MW DX organizations here in the US. They both have enjoyed a very long and respectable reputation as being 2 of the top organizations in the world devoted to this. If you're into MW DXing you need to be a member of either or both of these.

You can find their links here...
