Apparently Woodford County will be making the switch to NEXEDGE sometime in the near future.... New portables are in place, supposedly this is to be a conventional system... more as I can get it!

That'll help interops... It seems privacy is more important that working together.
Oh wait, it's always been that way.

When I was in Wilmore I never really could get Woodford Co. I hope you can receive them better.

How are interops effected? NEXEDGE radios can operate in analog which is the easiest mode for true interoperability.

And who to say they'll even have analog programmed in. Usually don't because that would defeat their purposes.

Bottom line we have P25... don't need to build a new road. And I think the cliam for analog is a marketing ploy by Kenwood.
And for a business system it's great, for public safety not so great in my opinion.

And it's a problem because the neighboring cops and fire agencies can't monitor it on a scanner. For years cops on patrol, and dispatch monitored scanner traffic and knew when something was happening.

For instance, last night a pursuit went through the county and got away... because the agencies couldn't or wouldn't talk to each other. I think it was a little of both. But the six ISP units could talk to each other.

Yes, why move forward when you can stand still. (NOT!)

Yeah guys, wouldn't want to do anything that is simple and effective, right?

Effective is only measurable against a goal.

If interoperability, eligibility for grant funding, availability of a wide range of public safety grade equipment, etc, are not in your goals, then I am sure you could say FRS or CB are simple and effective.

If a cop from department A can talk to a fire fighter from department B on the same frequency using analog modulation, how is that not interoperability?

And if part of that interop is top be assigned to other common channels, do those have to stay analog forever also?

You can do it right this time, or next time.

Makes sense now, Southern Communications in Lexington had SEVERAL new Nexedge radios in stock 2 weeks ago when I stopped in

It may be interop, but best way to communicate is for each agency to be able to monitor and communicate when every they want or require. I have never used a mutual aid channel but I use another agency channel on a weekly basis.

The NEXEDGE on line sales flyer makes it perfectly clear why they are selling:

NEXEDGE™ technology offers inherent security against casual electronic eavesdropping via its NXDN™ digital air interface and also includes NXDN™ voice & data scrambling for security against external threats as well as providing confidentiality within the same system and talk group.

Just wonder if I am the casual electronic eavesdropper or the external threat... but I do know there are some inherent problems in the coverage of Woodford County's current public safety system and I think this might cause some additional problems since digital is either hear or don't hear. I am curious to see if either of the fire departments involved have thought about testing the NXDN™ digital air interface to see if this protocol presents the same danger to firefighters in turn out gear at a fire scene.... see the thread: Firefighters distrust of digital radio system grows... or if there are plans to keep analog radios for use as fireground communications.

Interop bothers me a lot as well, an almost ironic concern since Woodford County has a well trained and fairly active CERT/MERT program... (an aside: I also have concerns for the Hopkinsville/Christian County decision given the military base in their midst unless Fort Campbell is sharing their on-air resources with neighboring jurisdictions as Fort Knox has with at least two that have been confirmed.)
