I wonder if AEP will lose the unit to unit Icall capability they have with EDACS switching to P25?
Icalls make for some interesting listening :)

I do believe that user to user is within the radio settings that can be turned on. If they have gotten Harris radios then i believe they should have user to user calls but I may be mistaken

We have seen unit to unit calls from time to time in OHio since the migration to P25, at least I have. I haven't monitored the system in 7-8 months though, but I imagine this still holds true for Ohio.

Heard several casual conversations on Flat Top site today
Especially TG4700...talk between traveling AEP power system technicians driving between sites testing fiber installations.
Had my HP1 tuned to Flat Top at the same time and heard nothing.
BTW I updated the site research wiki list for Ansted and its neighbors...

Rgr. sounds like 4700 might just be another tech talkgroup for the AP side of things.

On an ordinary day, what AEP P25 sites are you able to copy from your location, Harry?

Normally Flat Top, Bolt, and Kingston at home... Alderson (Keeny Knob) when on the river at Hinton
It was funny I found FlatTop P25 with my SDS100 while looking for good place to hear Ansted P25
I used RTL-SDR to run Unitrunker V1 to get the data for Ansted and Flat Top
I had Coal Fork P25 solid on the north end of the WV turnpike last week in travel.

Ok good deal. Keep an eye out for new neighbors/peers on the sites that you can monitor, especially Flat Top (which only has one neighbor right now). I'd really suspect all of the sites that you mentioned to end up coming online this summer. Just a hunch, no inside info.

Due to Flat Top's relative proximity to Bolt, Kingston and Alderson, just watching for peers on FlatTop may be the ticket to discovery.

Logic would dictate that. However, logic doesn't always prevail. I would have suspected that in the absense of Bolt / Kingston / Alderson P25 being online, the Flat Top site would have listed the next closest neighbors. Instead it is only listing one. So even though it is likely that the Flat Top neighbor list will be the best clue as to when new P25 neighbors around it come online, it isn't guaranteed.

In Ohio, for the longest time the St Clairsville site didn't list any neighbors -- even though most of the neighbors around it were indeed online P25 sites.

Key word = "may" :)

Harry,

Do keep in mind that UT V1 will not show failed/isolated neighbors. DSDPlus (at least DSDPlus Fast Lane will, and probably the free version too). Being able to view the full neighbor list (connected + failed/isolated) may help. I note that your sig says you have DSDPlus. If that is true, you might want to monitor as many of the P25 sites as you are able to reach, using DSDPlus, and see if DSDPlus reveals more peers/neighbors that are not currently connected but are failed/isolated.

I did compare DSD+ with UT for Flat Top and DSD+ with SDR#... in this case DSD+ gave the same info on neighbors of FT
I am just learning the SDR game and all of the players...It has given me a new interest in amateur radio.
Right now everything I use works to my satisfaction so I am reluctant to add or change my configurations (upgrades to DSD+FL, UTV2, Etc)

Obviously that is your choice. free DSDPlus is definitely lacking in features compared to DSDPlus FL, but I'm not sure if it is so lacking that it wouldn't show isolated/failed peers on P25 systems. And the mechanisms for keeping DSDSPlus FL updated are a PITA (and I was an early adopter). So I don't blame you. Just keep in mind that it may lack some useful information when monitoring P25 systems, just like UT V1.

Hopefully more sites will come online down there soon.

A friend of mine said when he picked up their p-25 system it was encrypted. I don't know myself I haven't had time yet to see. Does anyone else know if it is encrypted or not??

I haven't [yet] seen an encrypted talkgroup on AEP P25. That's not to say they don't / won't exist. Every talkgroup that I've noted so far (in Ohio) was in the clear. I suspect your friend should re-evaluate what system he was listening to.

Site 37 Flat Top has indicated a new neighbor today, 92715, 1F7, 25.25 854.8875 CC.
I cannot find that frequency in the EDACS database and only in 1F6 and 1F9 Systems in P25 database
Totally new site or conversion with new CC? I cannot hear it from my location.
Comment...
