What I do, is have a scanner that scans only my county then the other scanners that scan anything else that I am able to and want to listen to. I usually try the surrounding county's towers, sites, frequencies.I have a question. I'll try to word this right.
I'm in Benton and I was wondering when I'm programming the surrounding counties, and there is the option to program AWIN for each county, do I have to program the whole AWIN list for each county? Can I just program AWIN for say, Saline or Pulaski county and then the conventional channels for Garland, Grant, Faulkner and Hot Spring Co.? Also, what sites do I use? Do I just use the ones near my location? I travel to the NW part of the state every week. Do I use some of the sites along the route? I notice on the scanner it seems to go through alot of sites (depts) when it's scanning. Thank you.
I'd check the counties you want to try to listen to, what ur wanting to listen to (FD, EMS, PD etc) and see if you can program it in and pick it up. See if saline county, pulaski county etc have TGs that ain't encrypted. You will need to look for sites close to your location that u think u can pick up. Even try to tune to the control channels before u program it to see if you can pick it up good, or to frequencies to test and see if u can get it well enough to listen.
I assume you wud pick up at least a a few towers on your route, but not knowing the exact way u take it be hard to know for sure, but I'd say it's a safe bet you come close to at least a couple of towers.
But back to the sites, just try it if you think your in range of it's towers and sites and has stuff that's not encrypted that you want to listen to, that's what I'd do
