Scott: I completely agree.

(Assuming you don't edit your message to say something else...) :)

Ouch! Sorry about that. New phone and fat fingers. But I'm glad you see things my way... . Its a Windows Phone 8 and hopefully we'll have a siren-like app for it at some point.

I'll put this away now before something else happens. Butt dialing RR...who'd a think it.

Let's look at their dimensions:

7.20W × 1.90D × 2.20H in - RH-96
7.81W × 4.72D × 0.42H in - Nexus 7

So you'd have a tablet that's wider by about a half inch and taller by more the twice the amount to control 1 scanner. This is in a helicopter where every inch of real estate matters. Not to mention the cords come out of the ends as opposed to the back, so you'll have to add a little to the length.

Using tablets and smartphones exclusively to control the scanner is not the best fit for every single potential owner of the scanner.

I guess I was imagining a bigger helicoptor in my mind. I was speaking more to the wifi aspect of the setup in my post. ;-)

Myself... I would rather use a tablet (that I already own) than a wired remote head any day but then again, I would only be controlling one scanner at a time.

IF and when it comes to iOS, you could also use a very cheap iPod Touch to do the same as a phone would... And permanently leave it mounted. Much smaller than an iPad or other tablet for tight spaces.

Upman, will the app take advantage of the larger screens of a tablet or will it simply be a magnified version of the same layout? And please oh please, if you remember my request for the HP1 a while back for a frequncy pad like function where I can set up a bunch of analog channels to a button layout which I can easily switch between simply by tapping on them. That would be awesome.

Thanks.

The app screens shown in the introduction video from Saturday showed a screen very much like the HP1's layout, with just three bars for System/Department/Channel, and some ancillary "function buttons" around the edges. Only Paul would be able to tell us if that is what the final release would look like.

And even I can't tell you, yet. Engineer is here Friday/Saturday to meet with me and the developer to go over these and many other details. Woo-hoo, Saturday meeting.

In the video I noticed the radio writes to the card after the unit is switched off.

I have my 996xt wired to my car's ignition circuit so it automatically powers on and off with the car.

Can I power the new one in the same way without causing issues?

I asked the same questions a few pages back. Here is UPMan's response.
It only writes back certain state changes that have recently happened. For example, it might not keep the backlight status or some other minor function. Major things are saved when you do them (since SD cards have limited number of write cycles, we don't want to use up those write cycles on minor things).

Basically you should be find as long as you don't make any minor changes. If you make changes allow it to power off correctly. I plan on carrying a backup SD card just incase.

GPS

Is there going to be a new GPS unit the works though the USB port and if so can you have it along with the WiFi dongle connected at the same time?

BCD536HP screen colors

Does the display have any color besides blue?

Hi

Going through the manual and the scanner does have different colors for the screen for alerts.
here's the alert section from the manual.
Custom Alerts – You can program your scanner to alert when you receive, a Channel or Unit ID,
a Close Call hit, an ID is transmitted with an Emergency Alert, or a Tone-out hit. For each alert
in the scanner, you can select from 9 different tone patterns, 15 volume settings, 7 colors, and 2
flash patterns.
Multicolor LED Alert – The alert LED with 7 colors, Blue, Red, Magenta, Green, Cyan, Yellow, or
White, can be used with your Custom Alerts.
I'm liking this scanner more and more.
P.S. This is also for the BCD436HP

I just found something I really like. Data naming with up to 64 characters, not the 16 characters on the old scanners. ooh!!!

Unfortunately, this is actually not the LCD screen color it is referencing. It is pertaining to a multi-colored LED located in the upper corner of the speaker region on the 436 and an LED that surrounds the tuner knob on the 536.

Correct. The screen color is white with dark lettering. The only color you get, other than white, is an alert color either around the volume knob on the base or the little blinky light near the speaker on the hand held. Might be, could be, maybe is a step backwards. Or maybe just different.

Got a fire tone-out question and perhaps a suggestion.

Am I reading the manual correctly where you can program up to 32 different tone-outs (all on same frequency) but only one of them can be "active" at any given time?

Around my neck of the woods each fire station has one set of tones for fire calls and a separate set of tones for medical calls. So if my reading is correct, I'll have to choose whether I want to "tone out monitor" fire or medical calls (but not both simultaneously).

We've also got a couple of "All Calls" which alert all firefighters without having to set of individual station tones.

So if the Uniden engineer person has a little extra time come Friday or Saturday, it might be interesting to see if multiple tone groups could be used.

Negative. Only one frequency can be active at a time. Any and all tones programmed for that frequency will cause the scanner to alert when they are sounded. This is no different than how the XT series operated, the only difference between that they've expanded the maximum amount of tones from 10 to 32.

The only GPS standard (NMEA) specifies a serial connection, so I suspect there will be no support for a USB GPS. But, I could be wrong.
