If I connect the Uniden Bearcat BCD396XT via the USB-1 to a wall wart, can I power it or is the USB-1 exclusively for data?

Also, what connector is on the scanner end? Is it proprietary or is it something like more common like a micro USB?

The scanner's serial port is for data only. The port is not exactly proprietary, but it isn't used often (I've only seen it on very old digital cameras and more recently GRE used the same connector, but different pin-outs for iScan).

I found the bct15x for $200. New. So this got my attention again. On the link to mono price here. There is a cheaper 3 ft cable there as well. Usb to serial convert cable Db9m / usb a male.

Says it provides an re 232 connection. So would that work too?

I'm using the Monoprice adapter on my BCT15X, Vista 32 bit and it works well. I think I paid about $8 for it. Don't know if that's the one you are looking at. The updated drivers are out there now, so you shouldn't have any trouble. Go with the Prolific driver.

Over the past few years I've bought 18 of 'Product ID 2276' from Monoprice.com
They've worked flawlessly on eight computers and 20 Uniden scanners..

I haven't tried any of the 'Product ID 3726' cables.
The only comments I've read about them are from people having problems finding the correct drivers. After that, they seemed to work OK.

For the $1.81 difference in price, I'd buy the 2276 because I know they work.

Rich

Here are the drivers I'm using for Windows XP and Windows 7 (64 bit)

Prolific USB Adapter Chip

That adapter cable from Monoprice uses a Prolific chipset. The adapter was recognized by both my xp and Vista machines without installing any new drivers
Dave

I have had a Dynex USB1 adapter cable which uses the Prolific chip for years. WIN7 64bit recognized it as well. And what you know, it is now 100% rock solid versus WINXP for my 246T and 396XT. Also, I use the Dynex cable for programming my ICOM IC-91AD. Works flawlessly with every radio.

I have the Monoprice cable and have installed the prolific drivers...

In Control Panel it says device cannot start.

Any ideas?

It's a win7 machine, I'm using the same driver referenced a few posts back by rbm.

I'm going to guess that you have an exe file for installing the driver. Try right clicking the exe and then click "run as administrator".

It should work fine but just be aware that these cables have been hit and miss. That's one reason why I bought a few of them, one turned out to be bad...

Just got 3 from Monoprice. Glad I spotted this thread, was about to pay waaaay too much for a Uniden cable.

Works great. Thanks to the OP for the heads-up!

I found this thread a few years back and bought the cable/bridge. The bridge recently failed me. It had an intermittent problem - sometimes it could communicate during large data transfers with my scanner and other times it would fail in the middle of the transfer. Of course it failed during a firmware update as well. I ended up using an old computer with a true RS-232 serial port to complete the process w/o issues. When they work - they rock - but listen to Dubbin and have a few on hand if you have no computers with actual serial ports to back you up.

I don't know what happened... lol

I tried a few different drivers and uninstalled the device. Plugged it in (for the 100th time) and this time... it worked.

Now if I can just find my registration keys from butel.... why don't I save them somewhere safe? haha

Could someone post a link to the best / most up to date drivers for this little beasty? I think that has something to do with my problems.

Thanks,
