I did a walk past the Shops on Monday and saw the Bronto A0298 out of service once again parked inside the little 3 bay building at the NW corner of the property along with T0288. Any thought of the city replacing the Bronto, is there something on the market that can provide the same height extension?

At the moment i'm not sure about the Bronto's.. I heard 2 years ago that CFD would probably keep the big Bronto Skylift around for 10 more years, (Kinda like a Chicago Fire Department thing with there Huge Snorkle Trucks) but things change. Right now when it is in service.. the Big Bronto is cross staffed by 25 Tender and is more of a show/training piece. It only goes on calls when its requested to or when the tech team needs it

But all 3 three Bronto's in the fleet are run down.. it's hard to get parts for them and they are continuously rotating in and out of the shops (as previously mentioned the 114' RLP's are 13 Years old, the Big Mamma is 19 Years old)

CFD did request 'fire manufacturer brochures' on 'articulating rescue ladder platform (RLP) trucks' last year, but of course they are expensive trucks. We will have to ask around or just wait and see.

Bronto Skylift in a big brand in Europe it seems still and I believe E-one still works with them? Rosenbauer has some nice 114' RLP packages - look at Cochrane and Chestermere for some nice examples! Spartan ERV and Pierce also offer 135' RLP trucks as well - if I'm not mistaken.

I really hope CFD purchases at least 1 New Tender soon.. or 3-4 new Tenders, add one to the fleet and have a reliable spare and then cross staff them with Aerial crews.. that might be nice to see

25 Bronto was erected and at pretty much full stretch when I passed by the shops around 1515 on my way home. Could be just periodical maintenance/checkup.

Thanks guys. I find for a piece of Apparatus that is rarely used it seems to go in for Service fairly often. It may have got called out for the recycling business Fire Monday Night but with a smaller bronto at 23 I doubt it would have made the call. I was looking at what's out there in the North American market and it seems 134' is the current max. That is quite a reduced height compared to the 167' avaialable from the monster in a calgary. At the same time I wonder if the 167' is an extreme and unnecessary requirement? I get that we have skyscrapers in the city but do we really need that height especially if it doesn't get used often enough to possibly account for its cost. Don't get me wrong, I love the big boys but is it effective for our city. I take every opportunity to photograph the beast but in my gut I think it's time is coming due and I don't see its size being replaced. Hope this doesn't come across as too negative just general thoughts and discussion. You guys have great insight.

JR

The first of the 19 Smeal Engines that CFD will receive this year has been delivered. Sorry I couldn't take a picture of it to share.. It doesn't look like any modifications/changes have be made from the last batch of Engines to this batch of Engines. Would be nice to see the Eq2b siren back in use though :/

The new Station 7 is unofficially operational!! - It has probably been that way for a week or two.. but for those of you who have seen it yet, this is what it looks like. This Station has slides instead of fire polls - the first I have every seen :)

Given that the London Fire Brigade had to borrow a 138' unit from Surrey Fire Brigade when the Grenfell Tower fire occurred earlier this year as all of their aerial units maxed out under 100 feet, having a couple of Bronto type devices in Calgary makes a lot of sense. Fighting fires in towers is becoming more of an issue with some services now calculating response times to the actual floor to see what needs to be done to ensure adequate protection.

Why does it say that Station 26 has a 1988 Tender on the fire wikia? can someone confirm or debunk it please?
I put it up. The 1988 Tender is currently running out of Station 26 as Tender 26. CFD might have put it in service for extra man-power/grass firefighting protection in the south end. It's either temporarily there for the dry season or its a permanent placement because 26's first run is huge. I haven't heard anything - but the Tender is there and in service

I was at Station 6 yesterday, noticed a slightly different looking grill on their engine.. anyone know if the 2017 engines are acting as spares? If assume not but you never know.

Awesome! I'd say I wanna see a MRU at 23 but since 12 is really close there's no point.

Also I was talking to the guys at 23 and they said a possibility for a rescue to station there.

I'm not surprised by the expansion of these units there is obvious cost savings on vehicle wear and tear as well as manpower by sending out a two person crew vs a 4/5 person crew to Medical calls. I've yet to get a photo of the units though

Station 1 has their MRU constantly in and out of the hall I've got plenty of pictures if you'd like one for your gallery? Example:https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170930/fde18efd0f82e4a99cc20372f4941e58.jpg

With the success of MRU 1 and 12, Stations 14 and 22 are also getting MRU's

Do you know when these units are coming on line? I have seen a new MRU sitting outside the maintenance shops, but I couldn't see the fleet number.
I imagine a new recruitment class will fill the man power need for these units, or CFD will drop an extra Engine (Squad as they once were know) and split that crew up.

There is a Engine and Aerial in station 39 now. Nothing really moved.. there was supposed to be 6 firefighters on the quint (on paper). So 2 ff's stayed on the Aerial - 4ff's moved to there new 2017 Engine. I don't know if South Chief is still at station 39 or not - could be at 26 Station?

26 Station is probably packed... they have TENDER engine hazmat and rescue I think? Could be wrong.
