I was wondering if it was possible to scan more than one bank at a time with the FT70, I have memories setup for multiple collections, is it possible to scan 2-3 banks at once?

Yes it is possible. I use RT Systems programming software. Select the "Settings" menu and then the "Bank Names and Linking" menu. You will then see a list of bank names in use with check boxes. Just check the banks to link and save to the radio. It also possible to have a frequency appear in more than one bank without re-entering it.

I asked the guys at Yaesu and was told "It's not possible to link banks and scan more than one simultaneously like you're asking"

I'm not sure whether you are telling me that I don't know what I'm talking about or Yaesu doesn't. It works. I'm scanning 3 banks right now using the method I outlined. Try it.

When I first got my FT-70 I had the cable from another Yaesu radio (RT Systems). I downloaded the ADMS free software and programed the radio. For reasons that are still unclear the free program would not set up memory banks correctly. I then bought the RT Systems software and everything worked. The bank linking is possible. However, I don't know whether it works with ADMS or not. A friend of mine did make it work with ADMS but I don't know exactly how he did it. He died a couple or years age and I never asked him.

All that said, when you are ready, I strongly recommend buying the RT Systems software and cable. It will save you a lot of frustration and you can link banks.

I still have my cable from my FT60R, will that work with the FT70, just needing the correct software?

If you look at the RT Systems website, it lists the USB-57A cable for the FT-60R and the USB-57B cable for the FT-70. However, I just looked at the cable for my FT-60 and it's the 57B, so they may be interchangeable. Which one do you have?

Per "Jared KO4DAY" at Tech Support with RTS, he claims the connector on the USB57A doesn't reach deep enough into the radio to properly meet connections

My suggestion is to try it. If it doesn't reach far enough into the radio, all that's likely to happen is you get an error message. Up to you...

The cable that I have was originally purchased for use with my VX-6 and also FT-270 and FT-277. It is the older model. The difference is that those radios had threaded mic connectors and thus needed extra depth. However, it works with my FT-70. You just have to make sure it is seated all the way in. I have RT Systems software for the FT-70. Nice not to have to buy a new cable for each radio.

Some where on RT's website it used to mentioned that the threaded cable could be used on the older FT-60 type radios, just be sure it was pushed in all the way. And it does work fine on my FT-60s just fine. I always use something weighed to help hold the cable down so it won't get bumped while reading and writing to the radio. Can't seem to find it this morning.

@k6cpo I went and plugged the FT60 cable into the FT70, and the computer acknowledged it, so it may work.

Great!

My first hand-held was a Yaesu FT-270. It requires a threaded cable to maintain water sealing. When I bought the RT Software package for it I received the 57B cable. When I later bought an FT-60, I asked RT if the 57B cable would work to program it and received an affirmative answer. I agree it's nice not to have to buy a new cable for each radio.

Is there a way control which banks link together?
See my earlier post. Check the boxes of the banks you want to link. Make sure the radio is in the bank mode. Select one of the banks you linked and scan. It will scan only the banks you linked.

I saw how you told me to link them, and saw in the software how to do so. I just didn't know if I had multiple banks selected, if it was possible to have it select which banks to scan without it scanning each bank listed as a link

The radio will scan all of the banks linked. The only way to not scan them is to not link them. You can have a memory appear in more than one bank. If you did this you could have banks with different mixes of memories. You can also lock out individual memories. The reality is that the radio scans slower than a dedicated scanner. I find that scanning several bank means that you may miss calls.

My main inquiry was if I could scan and link just 1, 3, and 8, or so for example, but say I had 1 2 5 3 and 9 linked all together, [using these numbers as examples only]
