Wow just saw something on the news about Camden County and money issues again with Police. Well maybe if they didn't spend so much money on a dang radio system they wouldn't be in this problem...

Fine me someone economically impacted negatively by this encryption, might have standing to legal challenge.

its a public safety issue

"As a Tax Payer I believe I have the right to choose if I want to know if a house 5 doors from me has a burglar alarm going off and if there is someone 400 feet form my house with a gun robbing people, or if one of my neighbors calls 911 needing help. "

All of these issues came into play in the last month has nothing to do with money

In the land of make believe
This might be your belief which you are certainly entitled to but no you do not have "right" to listen to public safety.
Perhaps if the powers to be did not provide a scanner app for phones or advertise on every big thing that shows up on tv as audio from BROADCASTIFY.COM or now under another name the encryption thing might never had happened. Of course the press showing up at a site before all the first responders does not help at all either.

Maybe you might want to mount a one man campaign legally and bring suit against the agency using your money for your "right to listen"?

I do not believe that one has a "right" to listen to public safety communications per se. Its by no means a fundamental right.

I think an argument could be made that if I owned an electronics store, some type of radio shop, was a TV news stringer, or a TV station etc, that could show cognizant financial losses that are needlessly cause by encryption.

I think an argument could also be made as hobbyist. Something akin to hunting and firearms etc. I will have to research legal arguments for this angle.

Both these arguments feel like uphill battles. And I agree that this website has contributed very nicely to the paranoia that is causing encryption and proves good cover for agencies to cloak themselves in officer safety.

Why did they not shut the web site down if it was causing that much trouble?

Who took up the suggestion on encryption for Gloucester County? The police chiefs? Police love encryption because it reduces accountability.

Some random thoughts they should consider:

1. Many additional ways for secure communications. There should be a balance between encryption and free and clear.

2. I would be very wary about alienating the media by cutting their access to real time communications. As a principle, I'd refuse to cover any of their "feel good" warm and fuzzy stories, you know the kind; K9events, police graduations, heroic rescues etc.

3. Police brass love to get their faces on TV just like the majority of the population. There will be a lot less "sound" with police chiefs when the media doesn't show up in real time and real incidents.

4. The hobby, while not sexy, is meaningful. How many first responders' appetites were wetted by scanning growing up.

5. As someone who was actively engaged in breaking news....if I can't use the scanner to discern the "newsworthiness" of the incident I AM going to BUG the HELL out of the dispatcher until I get an answer. Believe me, we get a lot of tip calls about police activity that is routine....

6. At a time when confidence in police across the nation is arguably very low, shutting the public out by encryption, at the vest least, gives a very bad appearance and damages the relationship with community.

Howdy 101, I hope this is brought up at the next Chiefs Assoc and County Firemans Assoc. meetings. How many fist responders have scanners? Many of us and this prevents us from getting a jump on the tones by not hearing the police side. Hoffman retired right?

any update form the chiefs meeting ?
