• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I've converted plenty of systems to narrowband back before the mandate. Never did I ever experience this "OMG" loss of range that everyone screams about. As a matter of fact, most didn't even know narrownbanding occurred. Of course, things need to be properly checked including all base stations and subscriber units. We didn't just slam bam thank you ma'am reprogram everything, because there are receiver issues when selecting narrow due to defective ceramic filters in older equipment.

A lot of people on VHF actually gained because it got rid of splash over from very close adjacent channels, especially when one user was already narrow and the other was wide.

Sorry, wrong. As bandwidth increases, so does channel noise.

This is why CW signals get through noisy conditions when any higher bandwidth signal (such as voice) may not.

DTMF? Frankly it's an anachronism at this point. Who bothers with the autopatch when everbody has a cell phone?

I have not heard the autopatch being used in my area in literally years.

Narrowbanding gives a better signal to noise ratio and increases power density per Hz of bandwidth.

If you're getting range reduction, something is very wrong.
DTMF is still used in controlling systems....DUH!!! I never said anything about AUTOPATCH!!! When you decrease MI below 1, your SN suffers PERIOD....commercial radios use compandoring to counter it but that adds other issues as well....Ive been in LMR for 45+ years...CW gets through because it has NO MI....it is a narrow band signal already and no real bandwidth (except based on speed of the CW)...

YOU ARE WRONG......

Options, XL-radio options. Create a channel edit password. When this is present, FPP will be enabled.

It also enables the Channel Info button press (on our radios it's left arrow, I don't recall if it can be put on other buttons). CH INFO shows you all sorts of useful stuff; for example, on a trunked talkgroup it shows TG name, number, radio ID, RSSI, assigned working channel (when active), control channel, zone and site numbers, and various others.

I was not aware of that but I'll certainly program it into my radio because those channel info fields will be useful. This local system has a noise problem that comes and goes and I'm trying to assist, more or less from the sidelines, in finding it. I suspect it's associated with a specific repeater and channel info will help me to verify it.

Does the CH INFO show these parameters with EDACS? The manual doesn't mention anything specific to EDACS with regards to CH INFO.

Since EDACS is actually a native function on the XL-185 and 200, literally not even requiring the purchase of the EDACS trunked package to work, I'm assuming so. Haven't programmed it into my radio yet, though.

Yes, it's true. You don't have to buy EDACS trunking for it to handle EDACS trunking for the 185/200. Confirmed. My own radio is equipped in this manner. It has NO trunked features at all, just P25 conventional, but works just fine with EDACS and that includes ProVoice operation. There are no listed ProVoice or EDACS features in the feature list.

Let me know if CH INFO shows EDACS system parameters, like it does with P25.

It's a global feature so it should work. That being said I can't confirm anymore as we ditched our EDACS system seven years ago.

I know this thread might be dead but I thought I would post and see if I can get any responses, I recently got into the Harris side of things from a CPS and Armada primary focus but when I try to enable VA in RPM I get a error message stating the audio config file is missing. Has anyone else ran into this issue?

Did you write the VA file to the radio too? Also under Options - Voice Annunciation... Voice Annunciation is checked at the top?
