I've converted plenty of systems to narrowband back before the mandate. Never did I ever experience this "OMG" loss of range that everyone screams about. As a matter of fact, most didn't even know narrownbanding occurred. Of course, things need to be properly checked including all base stations and subscriber units. We didn't just slam bam thank you ma'am reprogram everything, because there are receiver issues when selecting narrow due to defective ceramic filters in older equipment.
A lot of people on VHF actually gained because it got rid of splash over from very close adjacent channels, especially when one user was already narrow and the other was wide.
