I tried to update the database this afternoon and could not get Sentinel to display the data in the scanner... The ID was not listed and the PC could not communicate with the scanner... I would get occasional SD Card error messages; I tried reinitializing the scanner but could not with the SD card in the scanner... I have a micro SD adapter to use the SD Card directly on the computer... After a few tests I was able to update the database and my favorites lists directly on the card using Sentinel...

When I reinserted the updated card into the HP-1 all works as it should...

I am surprised and intrigued by this since I expected that the scanner itself would not be able to read the card... But, even though the HP-1 operates as it always did and I can use this technique as a workaround, does anyone have any idea what could be wrong? Does the scanner need to go back for service of the card reader? Could it be operator error?! Any suggestions will certainly be appreciated.

With the HP1 connected to the PC check device driver for a driver. Delete the driver , unplug and then plug back in and try it.

I've seen it load/use/whatever the wrong driver. Seems more likely to happen if you have other Uniden radios. I had it happen and have seen a few others do it also.

If not that - no idea :)

Thanks, I'll try that later tonight... I'll post the results...

Computer runs Windows 8.1 and all has worked well in the past...

I'll try using my laptop that has Win 7 on it... I have used the laptop with the HP-1 and Sentinel in the past... I'll post those results also...

Some results

I was able to successfully update the HP-1 using my laptop which uses Windows 7... I think that my Win 8.1 machine is not picking the correct driver for the USB Mass Storage mode...

I have the Uniden Serial drivers installed on this machine and that is what Device manager shows as active... Serial mode using ARCPatrol SW works as it's supposed to with the HP-1... But I cannot communicate with the HP-1 in Mass Storage mode...

Looks like I'll have to do some more investigation relative to this issue; but I can always revert to using Mass Storage mode with the laptop which may be a little inconvenient at times but does work...

Yes I do have Advanced on the HP-1... Do you think that could be contributing to the problem??...

Also, I have a BCD536HP scanner that I connect to the PC as well... it works OK in both Mass Storage and Serial Mode... I will continue to investigate this in my "spare time"...

In the meantime for the HP-1 I will use the laptop...

I don't think the extreme upgrade, if that is what you are calling "advanced" has anything to do with your problem.

Have you tried using another SD card?. They are the usual culprits when these unexplainable issues take place.

When phask mentioned the advanced I assumed he was talking about the extreme upgrade which I have...

I am currently using a 32GB SD card; I tried a 4GB card on Friday with the same results... I will get a new card and try that...

I was able to do more updating on my laptop this morning... The laptop does not have the Uniden Serial Interface installed... When I connect the HP-1 to my desktop, which has the serial interface so I can use my BCD536HP in virtual control mode, the confusion happens...

Are you selecting MASS STORAGE before trying to connect to the scanner?

Yes; I just tried again this afternoon and got the same results... I am able to update the HP-1 microSD card by putting it in an adapter and running HP Sentinel... And I can use my laptop to update it with Sentinel... So I have some workarounds but I am curious about this behavior... The computer giving the problem has the Uniden Serial port driver installed and I use it to communicate with and update by BCD536HP scanner... Also, I have not had any problems with the BCD536HP... I can communicate with it in Mass Storage mode and in Serial mode...

Make sure it doesn't have the serial port driver installed for the mass storage device. It needs a standard mass storage driver for that.

How would I check if the serial port driver is installed for mass storage??

I have a suspicion that something that Windows Update did is causing this... But I don't want to start to fix this since I have some workarounds available...

Check it in Windows Device Manager. If needed, uninstall the driver and let Windows reinstall it. It should be a standard driver for mass storage.

Update on this - today I tried updating my HP-1 using the Windows 10 computer... This time it found the HP-1 and I was able to read and write to the scanner... The computer did not start the serial interface in mass storage mode which is what it has been doing...

Maybe Microsoft fixed something in the last round of Windows 10 updates... Also, this time when I disconnected the USB cable from my BCD536Hp and connected it to the HP-1 I ejected the BCD using the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" icon before connecting to the HP-1. I have not always been careful to do this when switching between scanners.

But anyway it now seems to work whatever the reason.

Thats a good habit to get into..safely ejecting media. Make sure you have the unit OFF as well before handling a SD card. I hear that it can make a difference with SD cards and scanners playing nice with each other. If you are new to scanning you will love it...headaches and all.

A clarification... The computer originally had Win 8.1 on it when I originated this thread. Between last September and now I installed Windows 10 on the machine... But the problem persisted until today when I tried again and got the new result described....

I have noticed that other people have described similar problems and thought I should update my post...

greggk, I know what you mean... As I mentioned I did eject the HP-1 using the safe eject icon... some devices don't show up sometimes when using the safe eject... I think that the HP-1 was in that class, at least on my machine... But today I checked it before pulling the cable and found the HP-1 listed in the eject list... so I clicked on it before removing the cable and it worked... I might try again without doing that and see what happens but why tempt fate!!

Thanks for your advice...
