Hi areeceepb.... welcome to rr.com! What all do you like to monitor? With a 96 you should be able to hear a lot.... if you have any questions, just post them here, someone will have an answer or be able to point to one!

Mainly I monitor local Police Departments in Surrounding Counties and KSP.

Does anyone know where I can find a PC/IF cable for my 96? Thanks.

There are two places where you can buy them new.... at Rat Shack for $29.99, Catalog #: 20-047... or from GRE, also $29.99... I'd also recommend buying some programming software--Don Starr's WIN 96 is the best; it is easy to use with a very small footprint on your hard drive.... it runs $30.00 but is well worth twice that price for the headaches it prevents... the software will make things a lot easier and allow you to modify your files as you tweak them for the best monitoring, it will allow you to store complete loads for your scanner and to trade files with others....

been reading this site for about a year and a half. got back into scanning after a few years of being out of it. enjoyable hobby and an informative one. a friend in high school had an old rs scanner that we would listen to Lexington PD/FD and I sorta got hooked. first scanner I personally owned was a bc245xlt. have upgraded and bought more since then. live in mercer county but listen to almost anything I can receive. Active duty LEO and academy instructor, I listen to get information (like most everyone else) and always listening for incidents that I can use for a class.

welcome to RR.com. I just pulled the trigger on a PSR 500 myself. should be here tomorrow. but welcome and hope you find some good stuff on here

I know i'm out of jrisdiction here but wanted to chime in on you getting the PSR-500. I've had mine for about a week now and it is very good. So far! I'm not sure the ease of use moniker is appropriate and i probably wouldn't recommend it to a beginner that doesn't have a concept of conventional scanners. But it isn't hard to figure out. I program mine the old fashion way (by hand) and with a little button pushing and glancing at the manual it all comes in smoothly. My big issue was figuring out how to segregate stuff into the scan lists. It has lists instead of banks. The signal sweeper aka Close Call, Signal Stalker, etc has good sensitivity meaning it doesn't go too far outside of the general area and you also don't have to be right up on the source either. My BCD-396T had that problem with the stock antenna (another antenna plus the SMA to BNC adapter was just too awkward for me to keep up with), you almost had to be right up on the source for it to pick up.

Conventional freqs come in good. Its speaker isn't as booming as the Pro-97 but is still listenable. The digital clarity is awesome. I think a better performer than the much touted Pro-96. My old Pro-96 had an issue of poping in and out of comms depending where the radio was set up in the house. The PSR-500 hears everywhere in the house. I really like the digital AGC feature where it checks the system it's hearing 50 times a second and adjusts accordingly. This is a real good feature for conventional freqs that are P25. Only checked it on one milair freq 238.9 (AR-203) and it picked up fine. More testing on those bands will come later on. I think you'll enjoy it.

David, nice set up. Last time i talked to you, you told me you only were using a BCD-396 for your milair pleasure. Sounds like you hit the mother load. Give me a holller on IM soon, man.

How far out can you monitor? Do you monitor Barren County's SO, Glasgow PD, etc.. very well?

I am able to pick up the surrounding counties pretty good. Barren, Allen, and Simpson Counties are good and strong. The constant activity on our 800 system here in Warren county usually keeps the scanners from the surrounding counties so I will usually keep one of the 996s on Warren Co and the other for the surrounding counties. I keep my 780XLT for aircraft and my 396 has everything in it.

Good deal. I would love to listen to Bowling Green on a constant basis. But I just have an extended Rubber Ducky from Radioshack. I can pick them up in a few places in Glasgow, but not at my house. Do you have a tower that you mount your antenna's on?
