Yep, and then they will yell that they want to encrypt their transmissions. Really!

And why not, at least ARES isn't doing anything illegal, unlike marine band use!

i been reading your comments, and i live in michigan, and anywhere, and i do mean anywhere in michigan is the u.s. coast guard monitors all marine vhf radio traffic as part of RESCUE 21. from 1995 to 2003 the f.c.c. and u.s. coast guard has prosectcuted persond for misusge of marine channels. there are too many people with scanners , law enforcements/fire department and streaming marine audio.. as for gmrs and frs it's good that there are licensed stations however, living as close as i do to canada, gmrs and frs is restricted in certain areas of canada. and along the canadian border. this forum has told of people caught violating the law, fyi marine ch 88 is RCMP patrol boats marine ch 67,68, are calling channels for marina's on the canadain side

We had an interesting event our here a couple of years ago, We have a large lake here and a great many of the boats on it mount and use marine band vhf quite legally. Because of the that area rangers monitor 16 as a matter of course in their scanners and the water patrol folks in their HHs as well. So these two yahoos pop up on 16 coordinating and elk hunt and all the "wrong people" from their point of view heard them. There were a few problems with their hunt. 1. they were in a no hunting zone, 2. The use of radios to coordinate big game hunting is illegal in our state. 3. Obviously they were using marine radios in a shore environment. 4 It wasn't elk season. Since they were blindly broadcasting their locations to each other it was quite easy for the rangers to round them up. They ;lost the radios, their rifles, their permission to hunt in the state for a few years and oh yes, their pickups that they were using in attempt to poach a big game animal. We all got a good laugh.
