As much as I'd love to criticize the gov, I'm pretty sure he was holding a multi-band radio that has two faces. He was probably talking into the 700 MHz side. Notice the PTT button was on the right side, as he held the radio.

Care to expand on that?

Lol......I don't think dual band radios are split in half like that.

All of the articles and new snips on this topic have mentioned that the systems will be a secured one. Does this mean transmissions are going to be encrypted? If not, what is the meaning of "secured"? Thx

"Secure" can mean many things. Trunked radio system can be "secured" in a sense that only users with proper system key can get access to the system, essentially stopping unauthorized user.

"Secure" can also mean the use of encryption, where the users can only monitor the system with proper encryption key, essentially shutting out scanner users.

I suppose time will tell on whether how much encryption will be used.

Thoughts? How is it that the frequencies for this system (specifically the Pikesville site) are not listed on the fcc.gov license search database?
I believe they are using a general 700MHz licence that grants the users any frequency within a certain range as long as the users coordinate the frequencies to prevent interference with other services on the same band.
I think this is the licence they are using:http://forums.radioreference.com/ma...03-maryland-first-700mhz-trs.html#post1748303

I have a radio parked on Site 101 (773.79375) and so far today Pro96Com is reporting 11 radios and 7 talkgroups. So far it's logged 2 control channels, 2 data channels, 1 identifier channel, and 3 voice channels for this site. I'll submit more to RR later today.

My PSR-800 has been indicating activity and stopping on something but there is no voice

It's that blasted last parenthesis - if you edit the link you'll see why it doesn't work. Lindsay has never fixed this bug...Mike

The APX radio has a mic and speaker on each side of the radio. It is used for noise canceling. Either side works for transmitting and receiving.

From the article:
To ensure network security, voice communication on the radio system is encrypted. “That transition goes into the radio and it’s converted to digital data,” Lehr said. “Essentially it’s not a voice being transmitted across the radio waves anymore.”

Hello,
Running Unitrunker on the Cecil CC tonight and have a new peer, Site 001-007 reporting 773.79375cc
If you have a chance, have a listen near you to see if we can ID a location.

No radio activity on the Cecil site tonight.

Dave

I drove through Kent County today and this site is almost certainly Chestertown/Kent County. I was getting 100% decoding in Chestertown.

I submitted updates to RR ....

Clearly the article was wrong or the person was misquoted....

Not nessesarly. If wide spread encryption will be used, then he is correct. If not, for the general public the general way digital radios can work.

Of course it's much deeper than that, but today's general public wouldn't know anything different. Infant, most under 40 today would know that VHF used to mean channel 2-13 and UHF meant you have to turn a dial slowly.

Lots of "if" and "maybe" -- My point is that the article's comment implies voice will be encrypted (to the extreme, one could actually read the statement in the article to imply that "all voice" will be encrypted). What I can tell you with certainty is that I am listening (thanks GRE!) to clear voice.... at least right now.

I'm sure there will be some encryption - it's pretty common these days... but that doesn't mean everything will be encrypted.

Just don't read too much into anything. The system is hardly built and anything can happen. With ADP being a $10 option these days...

Wait a few years when fully built and loaded, we shall see.

Having suffered through the LSM/CQPSK issues trying to listen to the new Phase I P25 systems (Baltimore City, Baltimore County, PG County, etc.) I must say -- this new Phase 2 capability seems to be much better... I'm not sure if the improvement is in the new standard, the P2 upgrade from GRE, or both.....
