• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

XTS3000 has a whore-flash with 2 algo.
EFJ 5100 has a OPT file whore'D out but only does 1 algo

Before I go and buy a EFJ KVL cable to load keys in the EFJ, i was wondering which one really is the better radio? What do i like about the EFJ? FPP, Rad display and key lighting, 1wL & 5wH, Lighter radio, kicks butt on RX and TX. Things i dont like it's a ver1 radio so no DESXL, single line display (boring, really), PCC is oKay for what it is.

Things i like about the XTS3000? decent display, has 2 KG module (used daily), heavy like a brick(no really kinda heavy), solid feel to the hand,CPS is the bees knees. Things i dont like: no FPP, heavy, display text is non bold/thin hard to read in day light, if display breaks guess what I'm SOL, slow on key presses ( takes a second to get confirmations for scan to enable or to change a key manually ASAP).

It's a hard decision because i am a huge fan of Motorola portables but, after using the efj for a while its sorta/kinda grown on me.

What would you choose?
What do you like about your Motorola xts3000 or ef Johnson 5100?

The 5100 is more comparable to an XTS2500 features wise.

Also, you can mod that XTS3000 keyload cable to work on an EFJ. I don't recall the specifics right now but it's like one added ground line or something. I made a diagram. It should be floating around on the net somewhere.

stay on topic, please.
I don't need a radio I was adding my .02 between the to radios.
Just wanted other operators opinions between the radios listed.

Ive had a 5100 also a 5000 fpp also a 3000 ... I have found that the only advantage to the 5100 over the 3000 is the FPP. The FPP of the 5000 is easier to use than the 5100 though

I compared it to the 3000 because the 5100 is a version 1. I don't think I would choose the 5100 over a xts5000. I do have a xts2500 III & in my opinion it's better but tx and rx on the 5100 owns the Motorolas. It's too bad its a PITA to get the kg 1&2 ucm for my xts2500. For the price of the ucm I could get a used 5000.

So let me ask this. Has anyone compared DESOFB P25 encryption audio between a 5100 and a 5000 or 2500 or 3000? Again the audio tx on the 5100 is pretty darn good...with a little tweaking on the astro25 cps the xts2500 is better but I find it like comparing apples to oranges.
