I understand the NC Forest Service uses both VHF and VIPER. I am curious as to what VHF equipment (mobiles and handhelds) they are using. I know they used to Kenwood some years ago. Also have they completely deprecated the old low band 31.XX frequencies? I have heard rumors of some digital use in VHF, but I have never actually heard it.

Thanks in advance

Check out the link below to see the their current VHF radios. I regularly hear D2 and D12 on VHF, occasionally on NCFS VIPER talk groups, and local county fire dispatch channeIs. The capability to use P25 on VHF is there but I have never heard it. I haven’t heard NCFS low band in years.

Thanks. Those are pretty slick with the field programmable capability. I also see the VIPER radio below it. Good stuff....

Some of it will depend on the county they are located in as well so they can maintain comms with all the local fire departments as needed. I know a large portion of D1 doesn't even have VIPER in their vehicles unless their county uses it. Most I'm familiar with is Kenwood and BK for their portables.

I have heard some P-25 on VHF Channels. Was not near radio so not sure what channel. Never hear D8 on VHF. But hear D7 almost every day. Don't think Low Band is used at all.

I've heard them mostly on VHF. From the equipment I've seen..... mostly Kenwood portables and mobiles, guess they're phasing in the BK M-150s. Not sure what they're using for the VIPER side.
