noob question

So using freescan I added all the systems for MSWIN and only a select few talk groups like Rankin and Madison counties. So far I've heard Madison PD and Ridgeland PD and FD. When I hear them it seems to be on a random system each time (random ones designated for other geographic locations). Like why should I ever hear Ridgeland PD on the system frequencies for Ackerman? I added all the systems even though I didn't want to but wasn't sure if I can pick or choose.

I'd like to better organize them (if possible). Could I rename the systems or combind them all under one name? It's a little hard to catch which PD I am picking up because the text at the top says the random system. Does that make sense? I guess the talk groups can use any system they want.

If a unit passes through your area and keys up on a site you are monitoring you will hear that unit. I have heard MEMA this week talking to dispatch while they are in the north working the storm damage this week, I'm in southern part of the state.
I'm also new to monitoring MSWIN and still trying to figure out how to organize my scanner for MSWIN.

Unless a TG has been set up locked to only a certain site/zone, you could potentially hear that TG anywhere in the State. State agencies, you most assuredly have chances to hear any and all of their TG's from any site. As for setting up an scan pattern: If you are scanning from an fixed location, and are interested in an precise municipality only, you should only put in the closest site to you, and only local agency TG's. If your wanting to hear potentially all the traffic from your area, put in all the nearest sites up to say 30 miles around you, and all the agencies you wish to hear TG's. If your mobile, put in all the sites in your travel path, and TG's you wish to monitor.

That depends on what scanner your running. If able, set up wildcards for new TG's so that you ca hear/see them, or do TG search.

Thanks milf, that's what I thought. Rankin and Madison county at least, seem to be using sites geographically outside the metro area. I was going to make a list of all the sites I heard them on. It's several that are no where near Jackson. So I think I should just leave all the sites in the scanner to ensure I'm not missing any conversations. As for TG, I only added the TG I'm interested in.

It's not that big a deal to see the site at the top and TG under it, just the site name jumps out at you on my model scanner and is misleading. I may just rename all the sites to MSWIN 1, 2, 3, and so on.

Okay, so apparently the Yazoo County EMA is on the MSWIN as well as the YC E-911 TRS now. Keep ears open guys, possibly signs of move for YC from the LTR to MSWIN?

Last I knew Lawrence SO was still on its multi freq VHF system using NFM. I remember nailing down most of the data personally back when I still lived in Union Church (Jefferson County), before moving to Jackson, then Memphis, then everywhere else.... after the house fire.. No one ever subbed info on the SO TAC South, or the Firegrounds. I remember Lawrence was supposed to be testing out MSWIN, but never got any confirmation of use.

OKAY... I think we now have all the PS TG's for Rankin County, need the DPW stuff still, and still need the Washington County LEA TG's, and DPW... In other News: Oxford is dumping DMR and going MSWIN all out. So they join the LCSO there. Still wish Ole Miss would jump onboard. Miss State may get ISSI or an actual TG for roaming on the MSWIN, but so far they and Oktibbeha/Starkeville are happy on the Harris P25 conversion of the old EDACS. Speaking of - we NEED the TG's for that, as well as more data for the MBCI P25 systems.

It's about time they did. Was getting real tired of OPD being the only agency in the county on DMR.

Do you have any information on when that change might be happening or if they will be P2?

UMPD is DMR and is staying DMR. OPD s going to be mostly encrypted no matter if FDMA or TDMA. OFD and DPW should be clear. Switchover should be by fall.

Thanks! I'll keep an ear out for any new traffic in the coming months.

I am new to the scanning hobby, I have read some about the MSWIN and I need to know what handheld scanner will be good to pick this up and also the Phase 2 and LTR . Also with the MSWIN will I only hear the local traffic or will I hear statewide traffic? Thanks
