ABERDEEN – The board of supervisors approved the purchase of 48 Mississippi Wireless Information Network (MSWIN) radios for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office during its March 7 meeting.
“The sheriff and I have talked about the problems with communication mainly due to the terrain of the county,” said county administrator Evan Adams. “This is the system the state put into play.”
Monroe County has two radio towers, and the MSWIN system links a network of 144 tower sites statewide. The system was initiated after Hurricane Katrina.
“In our line of work, these radios are so important, and communication is vital,” said Sheriff Cecil Cantrell, who said there were very few weak places for the MSWIN system in the county.
Statewide agencies such as the Mississippi Highway Patrol and Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks use this radio system.
In a motion made by District 4 Supervisor Fulton Ware and seconded by District 1 Supervisor Joseph Richardson, supervisors accepted the low bid of $1,344 per radio from Precision Communications.
This year’s budget includes $25,000 for communication upgrades, and according to Adams, an additional needed $40,000 isn’t budgeted.
According to Cantrell, his department’s budget is currently 2 percent under budget, mostly due to decreased gasoline prices, and he will strive to keep his budget in line to to accommodate for the purchase.
The county will still maintain the current radio system for municipalities and volunteer fire departments.
“We can’t have an officer somewhere needing help. You can’t put a price on an officer’s life who needs help,” Richardson said.
