System Requirements
In order to run Win500, you'll need the following:

* A copy of the Win500 program
* A PSR-500 Scanner
* The blue GRE USB Scanner Programming cable that came with your PSR-500.
* A Windows (2000, XP, Vista) PC. Sorry - 95, 98, and Me are not supported.

I am not at all surprised the link is & will be attacked as the regular old "do you work for the company" childish type posts. That's why I did not mention it by name before & only did so because some thought it could not be done.

Of course the fact it supports fourteen scanners , that's 14 for the children here named Dave , may be the reason it costs more. Not to mention can do what D Starr say's he will not do because it's "useless".

Yes...let's talk "relevant facts". Which I will continue to do about ScanControl , located @ http://www.scannersoft.com , if it is trashed without facts. Just as I would do with PSREdit located at http://www.psredit.com or ANY pgm I've purchased & is trashed simply because it's mentioned.

Information...that's what this site is supposed to be about.

1. Over the years, my pay pal account has three $15 dollar upgrades (additional 45 bucks). That would be from 3x to 4x then again to 5x then again to current 6x. BTW, 7x will also cost another 15 bucks.
2. Data Grabber just started with this current 6x upgrade and is no where equal to Web Import which has been available with starrsoft for over three years.

I've had ScanControl for right around 3 yrs. Paid the $60 & that's it (so far). I've used it on at least 5 scanners without to many problems at all & love their support. The whole deal with "datagrabber" is to allow people to grab info not only from RR , which costs additional to receive , but anywhere that may have pertinent info. I've used it & had no problem with it what so ever. If one reads & views the supplied info re datagrabber it really helps when putting it to use. Datagrabber is new & will have growing pains. But the option to "grab" info without having to pay extra is nice. The IAC option , intelligent audio capture , is excellent & , for me , was worth the price paid just for it.

I do think it's "interesting" GRE will not allow the people who make ScanControl to have the necessary info in order to support the GRE radios. I have an opinion on why but , like anus holes , we all have those. I just wish GRE would release the info to ANYONE who wants to make software for their radios as it makes life easier.

At any rate...I also just wish Win500 had the equal to IAC. That's was ALL I was hoping for from the get go.

And yes , if allowed I'd prefer this thread end here. But that's up to others.

Heeeeeelp!!!

I've downloaded the software and have updated it all the way to V1.42 and am having three problems.

1--I've downloaded the zip file of 1.43 and for the first time it has asked for a password when I get to exe.dll. I've entered my key code and address and it doesn't recognize either. What am I doing wrong?

2--When I try to download my PRO-96 into the software it asks for a header. What is a header?

3--I can make changes in the settings tabs, but when I go in the object tabs I can't do anything. Everything is gray and can't be activated. The top of the data entry area (I assume this is what the large gray, blank areas that are a deeper color gray than the sides are) can't be read. This might be a monitor screen format problem but I've forgotten how to set it. Even if I do solve that problem, all the command type blocks on the side, in the lighter gray area are gray and inactive anyway. What am I doing this wrong?

I've had scanners since 1970 and I've never had this much trouble trying to figure one out when I've removed it from the box. I could sure use some help. It is beginning to get frustrating. I'm sorry if this question has been asked and answered, but I've been looking through all the various threads and can't find anyone who has had these problems.

Disregard above post. I thought I had WinZip loaded into the computer as it was on my old one as part of the packaged software. It was not and as soon as I took care of that, downloaded the software again, then extracted it, the software started working.

I fixed the non-visible header labels by adjusting the list row height to 20. Boy, Don Starr really needs to write a "help" for this application. I fiddled about on this program for the last few days with no results because there hasn't been a help section. I can usually figure out anything given enough time and fumbling and would have appreciated less fumbling myself. The WinZip problem was of my own making, however, and that was the biggest problem.

I love all the options on this radio and the software! Good job by Don getting it up and running as quickly as he did.

I have figured out how to add conventional frequencies to the PSR 500 program, now can some one please explain how I can add a trunking system which is not listed in the radio reference? Is it possible to add a trunking system id to a system already set-up? Everyone states go to RR to find wildcard hits, can someone take the time to explain how I might find those id's also. many thanks

In TSYS tab right click in upper window and select New Item at end. Default System alpha tag may be edited and Mot 800/900 may be changed by clicking in the box for a pulldown.

Yes, right click in lower window and select as above. This will produce a wildcard which you can edit in the info for the ID and its alpha tag.

If you renamed the previous wildcard as suggested, reclick in the lower window and add another. This wildcard will allow all ID's used by the system to appear in the scanner. Only the ID numbers will appear, and you will be given an opportunity to STOR them in the list as they occur by pressing F2 during coms.

Thank you ! When I get a wildcard hit, I have no idea who the id belongs to. Is there a list out there somewhere which will list id's and who they belong to? I hear all sorts of wildcards, but all my efforts to find the id name I come up blank.

It's just like the good old days of conventional scanning. Search the band, get a hit on a frequency, user not listed anywhere, now what? Try what those of us who generate those listings do - listen to it until you figure out who it is.

Did you check the database listing on this website for the specific system you're listening to? You can also try your specific state forum for some of your questions like trying to identify those TG IDs you're seeing?

And by now this might be getting off-topic for this particular forum and thread....

I noticed that Win500 was not logging the search hits (just a straight Public Saferty search from the Search button). I was really trying to nab a NAC in search mode but couldn't stay interested in the quiet freq to wait for the hit. Is this something that can be added? I would like to have it sit all night and capture all the freqs, tones, NACs, etc. Maybe even do the auto add thing for a unique freq/tone combination.

With your logging change, this works great. I add a Public Safety Service Search object to a scan list and it is now logging the info I need. Thanks again, Don. Great job!

Ok nobody likes the idea of a Win500 screensaver...how about is it possible to have the display scroll in the taskbar window when minimzed so no desktop used up....

no matter where i put the box on the desktop I put over the next thing i need to see or click !

In the "All Objects" tab, you could select all lines in the grid, right-click, and select "Reassign Object IDs". Select a starting number like 10000. Then, repeat the operation, but use a starting number of 1. The idea is to get everything out of the "target range" before assigning IDs back into that range.

A small "ticker" display is possible, and is something I've been thinking about.

In the meantime, however, you could use the Remote app for the monitoring. Its "separate LCD window" can be resized down as small as you want.

Losing record checkboxes when downloading from scanner

Don, This may be by design or perhaps a limitation. I like to record 2 talkgroups. I noticed that if I should do a download from the scanner, i.e. to get the latest hit counts into win500 (since I dont always keep the computer on and connected to the scanner), I instantly lose my record checkbox settings and they get cleared out Thats most likely due to the fact that the scanner does not have those fields and is implicit to the software.

Is there a way to not have those boxes unchecked?

What I did for a test was to check the boxes to record, then did an upload to the scanner. They stayed as they were. I exited the software and then came back in, they were still there. Finally, I did the download from the scanner and was watching the TSYS tab columns and sure enough as soon as the download was complete, they became unchecked.
