That's not necessarily the only way, as you know every scanner is on the control channel when checking for talkgroups.

Discriminator tap

I never used the tap before, it sounds like another plateau for my scanning hobby and will look into that. I noticed the picture of the psr-500 has the speaker on the bottom so i cant tell how reliable the info is on that blog. If there is a built in tap that would certainly be another plus. I still don't know what the finished product will look like.

There is NOT a built-in discriminator tap. Negative. Does not exist.

PSR-500 ordered the PRO-2096 doing well.

I am looking forward to receiving my pre-ordered 500.
I owned the Uniden 396 and enjoyed the ease of programing that one. I must say BUTEL made entering the trunking frequencies a breeze. I just could not get over the low audio on some trunking systems and I prefered a BNC adapter as well. It was a great looking scanner, however it just did not have the ease of use my pro-97 had.
We all know GRE made the 97 and I prefered its friendly programing as well.
So the 396 went on E-bay and I must say im pulled to it. Now using my head I pre-ordered the PSR-500. Being a Ham for about 20 yrs has taught me that if you sell it and buy it back your never satisfied. Well that is as far I see it for me. I have a few Ham radio paper weight handhelds sitting around now collecting dust. Well Christmas is near and those can go on E-bay also. I am a former Patrol LT. for a Sheriifs Office here in NC. I can say that I said while working I would never lesten to a scanner after I retired. It took about a year and a half and I felt the draw to listen to what I said I would never do. I loaded up a Dual Band HT with everything I could, but there was still something missing. It was the other frequencies that I could not receive. I had already sold my Uniden scanner that had servered me many years in my Patrol car. So now I am here having bought and sold three scanners already. I can see that the GRE scanners will be for me. It is just something about them. I own a PRO-2096 now and enjoy it very much. I will tell you I have the Uniden BCD996T. I use the PRO-2096 most of the time. The uniden is in another room with just the pull up antenna. I can say the 996 is built like a tank, but still suffers from the low audio on some systems. I realize this may come from the way the the agency sets the audio, but the 2096 audio is much better as far as my ear tells me.
Im not concerned about rebanding lifes to short to think about what will be anyway. Just sit back and enjoy our right to listen.,Chuck N4UED

10-4 on no tap. I'm here loading more stuff into my pro96 scanner and was just overcome by the thought of 21 v-folders in the 500. I think i may need to start drinking again!

Don't stress out, just use Win96 radioreference database import feature and V-scanner loader. I'm sure Starrsoft will have somthing for the PSR-500 that does the same soon after the radio is available.

Actually, Win96 was out prior to scanner release by RS.

I wish! I manually programmed the PRO-96 several times (first time took 8 hours, only took about 5 hours the subsequent times) before Win96 came out.

Obviously, a few like you and Don already had the scanner.:p

Release...meaning to general public. My copy of Win96 was paid for on Sept 1 03 but downloaded a couple of days earlier. My scanner was received on Sept 4, two or three days after FW had it available for shipping.

Edit: He He, unlike you, ya traitor :p I have never, ever manually programmed my 96 or 2096's.

Oops. Got my timeline mixed up. Guess that was a bit before public release (IIRC, Feb or Mar).

Do you recall if your scanner was CPU 1.1? Guess I was editing my previous when you sent last post.

I have heard Don Starr is indeed writing software for the PSR-500 and it will be released on the same day as the PSR-500.

If this is true, then this could explain his long absences from the board over the last year, and his slow responses to e-mails regarding program keys. He has probably been working on this program for quite some time now. I wonder how long it takes to write one of these programs (like Win96 that is)?

I loaded my scanner by hand, with practice i can do it pretty fast. I will buy the win500 when it comes out to keep my 500 well organized. I read that the new scanner has a "large" speaker, that could mean larger than all their previous HH's i hope.

From the "actual size" picture in the September Popular Communications magazine GRE ad, it looks to be the same size as the PRO-97.

Release Date <PSR-500>

Hi all,

Does anyone know if the "general public" release date is still slated for mid October for the PSR-500?

Thanks,
Brian

Newbie On 300 Vs 500 Differences, Other Than Digital ?

Hello,

I looked at the specs, but am a newbie with this, and not really able to answer this myself.

a. Is the only difference between the 300 and the 500 the 500's digital capability ?

b. If so, a $ 300 differential for digital ? Wow !!
Hard not to believe that there are othe meaningful differences; yes/no ?

c. Do both cover exactly the same bands; e.g., will the 300 cover mil air ?
I saw a post that it does not ?

The 500 does; right ?

Thanks,
Bob

There are several differences between the two. The two major differences are the 300 is analog and only supports ten banks for programming. The 500 supports digital and dynamic banking (read as many as you can fit into available space).

The 500 also has some new features (bells and whistles), like the programmable multicolor LED.

Both do support MIL-AIR. I didn't do a side by side comparison, but the two coverage tables are very close.

If you look at similar analog/digital (RS 96/97 or the GRE 300/500) radios, you will see they all have similar price differentials.
