Frequency step for UHF

I have been going through the on-line version of the manual and have noticed the frequency step for 420-450MHz is set at 5kHz.

Is that correct or a "misprint"? All my other scanners/receivers I have looked at have a step size of 12.5kHz or 6.25kHz

420-450 is the HAM band, and the 5khz step size would be correct for that band. There are areas (like the Detroit area) that have other uses in the 420-430 range that use 12.5khz steps. We'll have to wait and see how the new radios handle those frequencies.

Was talking to Universal Radio today and they are now saying the PSR-500 is not expected until the end of December, rather than mid October, and that they are not taking orders at this time. Has anyone else heard about this delay? Is there any word as to this indicating problems, or perhaps that some of the discussion here about selectable step size and other concerns has triggered a little pre-release modification of some design aspects? Is there anyone "in the know" on any of this?

Thanks Mike. That does make sense.

I am considering importing one of these to Australia, where, like Detroit, there are many users in that range that have 12.5kHz steps. Ham use in that band is not widespread here anymore... the government "borrowed" the allocation during the 2000 Olympics and has nerver really returned it!

Interesting. The web site still allows you to order and it's updated as of the 16th saying the radios will be in on 10/20/07.

I wonder what's so difficult about a company (GRE) putting a blurb on the web site stating the date of release to vendors?

I'm glad they build good equipment and are not in the mass communications business becasue they sure can't seem to understand that in the age of the internet a customer is only a click away.

Probably don't want to commit to a date... taking the safe route.

Yeah I haven't found a site that you can pre order from that says December. I am thinking the same thing, they got the 500 and 600 mixed up.

I've seen references that say the PSR-500 comes packaged with the programming cable (and in some cases a power supply). The last page of the manual mentions the included accessories and the cable and power supply aren't listed.

Has anyone gotten confirmation of what's really included?

Good to know. I want one. I'm debating if I should preorder or wait in case there are problems with the initial release.

It sure would be fantastic if GRE would release them sooner. Everyone is like a kid in a candy store. The kid can see it but not touch it. Chuck N4UED

Pre-ordered from Ham Station (thanks, Jeff). The manual sure looks interesting. Considering its pedigree (PRO-96) I have high hopes. Can't wait to learn it with you all.

I am on the border of this one. I have my choices down to the GRE PSR-600 or the BCD996T from Uniden. Some one sway me!

For TBHAUSEN: Why ?

Hello,

Would be most interested in why you fee the GRE 600 will be a significantly wiser purchase than the 996.

Thanks,
Bob

Read through the specs here and compare them to the 996. If the specs of the PSR600 fit your monitoring style better, go with that. If the 996 fits you better, choose it instead. There's NO way we can answer that question for you, but it seems safe to assume most people will prefer the options with the 500/600.
