Here's a question for the people using the Twitter system...

Are the "track" keywords case sensitive???
The reason I'm asking is because it seems I don't receive all of the notifications...
For example, last night ROLNCODE3 posted a notification with "Scansacmajor" and I never received the notification. I'm set-up to receive the notifications on my phone.

Maybe Twitter and T-Mobile don't get along all the time...

THANKS!

I myself have had some hit & miss notifications. So I added people to my "follow" list AND track certain keywords. That seems to have been an improvement. The downside is you will get non-scanner related posts as your notifications since you "follow" that person.

Also, I have noticed that when notifications are sent out, one after another quickly (seconds apart), I tend to get the 2nd notification and not the first.

It does seem hit/miss. I never got Ant's pursuit notification (that I later made the major on).

I do, however, get messages about him wanting beers and something about the lady at the Target in Lincoln (which was funny as hell).

Great idea...hard to tell if its flawed or what.

I guess a little patience is in order since it's free.

BTW - I added a 1500 SMS plan onto my data/wireless, so I'm receiving notifications to my phone.

So far, I am receiving informational SMS's that are event related, but I'm not completely confident they are coming from one of the several scansac list groups. More likely from people that I'm following. (although I did subscribe via my phone SMS, to all the groups, 2 weeks ago) Don't mind the other 49% off topic related messages. Most are pretty entertaining anyway, and they add a welcome glimmer of light during the middle of
a hectic work day.

(You guys crack me up!!..) I don't have a full phone KB, but will try to reciprocate when possible.

I haven't gotten any messages from anyone that I'm not following, so it's hard to tell.

I agree that it's suspect...

I have a HTC Wizard (or whatever the Cingular 8525 is called) which has a full keyboard so SMSs are super quick.

I know the keywords do work since I get totally unrelated hits off keywords, but I also doubt the accuracy of this feature. This is one reason why I have added extra TRACKed workds and use mulitple hits on some of my outgoing notifications.

"scansacpursuit scansac SPD pursuit ch 1"

Almost every day I get a totally unrelated hit on "SSD" which is one of the words I track.
I also get hits on the word "pursuit".

I don't mind the FEW unrelated msgs from others, I've added quite a few people on both accounts, "AntFreq" and "ScanSacramento". I know that some have added my personal Twitter at AntFreq, but my notifications are sent out 99% of the time on ScanSacramento.

Adding to AntFreq you may get some confusing, offensive or "inside joke" messages, but that's your choice and hopefully it doesn't ruin your experience. HA

Unfortunately for most, having two Twitter accounts isn't possible, since you can only have ONE cell phone number associated to your Twitter screen name. However there are work-arounds if you want a second Twitter that is not associated to your cell phone number.

1. If you have internet access on your cell, you can send out via the webpage on your 2nd Twitter and receive TRACKed messages on your personel Twitter.

2. If your cell has an Instant Messenger interface via text like AOL, you can send AND receieve scanner notificiations on your 2nd Twitter account.

3. If your cell has an e-mail interface via text message, you can receive scanner notification messages, but you can't send out.

My cell is a pocket PC through Verizon. It's a XV-6700 with full internet access. It has a slide out keyboard with touch screen. It's pretty easy to browse through basic webpages such as Twitter and Radio Reference.com.

I track keywords on my AntFreq account for notifications by keyword AND FOLLOWing profiles, but I send out messages through ScanSacramento.

I have noticed that I get the vast majority of notifications except when somebody sends out messages one after another very quickly. I tend to get the last one of 2 or 3 quickly sent out.

Twitter has been fully functional as we see it for less than a year. That's a short time in the world of hi-tech website services, therefore I do expect some glitches. However, Twitter has some very well experienced and "connected" people running their program, so I expect the service to develop fairly quickly. It's catching on pretty quick, especially through the business world. Companies have found it to be a great way to advertise their products and services.

There have been several pursuits in the last 2 weeks that I would have not known about if it wasn't for Twitter.

You could try not FOLLOWing anybody for a day or two and seen what you get compared to the Twitter websites. I have been deleteing my ScanSacramento posts after sending them out, perhaps I'll just leave them.

the easy solution is to use egroups

theres even a group already made for the purpose of this

Group Email Addresses

-----------------

if you use your cell phone as an email address - then when events happen and text them - it will go right to your phone

------------
i am guilty of not sending texts or alters to this group but when it works it can be a great tool

only takes 1 person to alert

if you are not sure of your phone's email address

just use your phone # _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _@teleflip.com

This is exactly how I'm doing it. My personal account is Sonticus while I post my scanning updates on sontscan. That way my non-scanner friends don't get frustrated/annoyed that I'm wasting their SMS messages with scanning updates. I don't mind people following the Sonticus account but, like Antfreq said, you'll be getting some off-beat comments so please follow at your own risk.

But I must say that I'm not getting all notifications. When I log onto the internet site I see people's updates that I didn't get on my phone, whether I'm FOLLOWing them w/notifications on or even if it's just something I'm TRACKing. Hopefully it's just bugs they're working out.

Overall the system seems to be working very well, keep it up.

My experience with Yahoo Groups has been far less than impressive. I was routinely getting e-mails hours later from when they were posted. Not to mention spam issues too. Additionally, Yahoo Groups requires the ability to send out e-mails which most can not do on their cell phone, therefore eliminating any notification posts while out-and-about. Nearly every cell phone has text capability, giving the user the ability to send out a notification regardless of access to a computer or e-mail.

I'm going to stick with Twitter, and hopefully the accuracy improves, I've researched a few other Twitter type services, none having equal or greater stability at this time.

Greetings - I've done some changes to ScanSacamento - It's now dedicated to public safety incident notifications via the Twitter service.

Twitter users can receive notifications on their cell or e-mail by fellow Twitter users and non-twitter users. My hope is that the amount of notifications being sent out will increase. Using this method will prevent Twitter users from having to " friend " people they do not know.

I've done a site redesign to http://www.scansacramento.com - aside from a new look, it has a real time chat room. In May, I will putting up some links for Sacramento area scanner audio feeds, including a couple new ones.

If you have a Twitter account, be sure to add @scansacramento

Sorry to bring up this very old thread :)
Are the Twitter updates still going on? I remember it was an awesome idea.

Unfortunately, I had to get out of the hobby and sell my scanners :-( due to the ol' ball and chain. The live feed is nice but it can be difficult to keep up with everything when it's scanning the 4 main channels.
