Btw, i was just talking to Matthew, KE5AFU, and he suggested maybe a library? We need somewhere to do soldering and such. I've soldered there once w/ a robotics team at school. I dont think anyone minded. :p

Scan OK Meeting 01-12-05

Alright people.. Good News for Wednesday's meeting..

We will meet at Metro Tech @ 201 NE 48th Street, at 730pm, it is at the corner of NE 48 St. and N. Walnut Ave. 1 block west of Lincoln Blvd.

For those of you coming from Tulsa, the best way to it is to take I-44W, take the Lincoln Blvd exit, turn right AFTER the first light onto NE 48th St. Go West about a block and pull into the parking lot of Metro Tech. Or simply type in 201 NE 48th into mapquest and that'll get ya there too! 8)

I've been told that there is room to build a data slicer and tap a scanner, so we will be doing that. As far as supplies for doing that, who wants to volunteer to pitstop at Radio Shack and get the needed supplies?

In case you can not make it until late, we should be there until about 9:30pm, so feel free to drop by until then.

One other thing, I've been told this can be our monthly meeting place if everyone else is ok with that.

If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, feel free to contact me via email or cell phone.. or just post it here!

I look forward to seeing more of you there. And bring your toys! :D

Also, please take note of the address. It is not at the main campus location. The correct address for our meeting place is 201 NE 48th St.

Well done foster_006. Will we have an Internet connection there?

I would like support our bro over there at Radio Shack, but as you know, I really do not like the RS project board to solder on.

Mabey we should first help with any radio discriminator tapping and build the slicer circuit on a solderless proto board to get it working and then see about soldering next time.

For those that want to buy a soldering iron, do not be tempted by cheap stuff. Spend the extra money and get a Weller, and some small tips to go along with it. You'll be glad ya did.

CRAYON:

Internet is available at the meeting. This location is where I work so I can get about anything you need. Let me know if there is something you need specifically or if it is just a way to access the Web.

SO we only have a Pro-95 and a 780 to tap? I think we can do that. Those of you that want to tap your scanner need to bring some sort of jack or output that will fit in your scanner (ie: Pro-95 = SMALL JACK, 780: a 1/8" mono or RCA will work). I don't have any wire or anything, so if you have a small piece of speaker wire or any other two conductor wire, you might bring that also. I can probably bring my drill, but would rather not - I don't have that many bits to figure out what size you need!

If you want to build a slicer, I would go with what Crayon said - get the experimenter's breadboard from RS (about $8.00), and all the components listed in the link in an above post. Don't forget to add the connector to link up your discriminator tap (on your scanner) to your slicer. We can put them all together at the meeting.

I am hoping to make the meeting. Is a Pro-2006 a scanner that can be tapped? I looked at the link above, are you talking about the parts list for the 2-level interface? I guess that I am just a "recreational" scannerist, as I don't understand what a discriminator tap and data slicer will do. Is there any other parts that I need besides what is on the parts list? Will a Radio Shack employee know what that stuff is? I did not see a parts list for the Data Slicer. Do I need parts for that? Sorry for all of the questions, but I do want to be prepared. I am looking forward to meeting everyone that I see on this board, and learning more about scanning.

See you tomorrow night,

Kent

I'll be bringing a PRO-92 and a BC780, and some tools I scrounged up this evening. An 1/8" mono plug will be too big for the 92?

Is that the 2-Level interface, the first diagram on that page?

1. A Pro-2006 can be tapped.

2. A 2 level interface is all I have used. It can be used for many data decoding applications. From what I understand, a 4-level can be used for some pager data, and eventually possibly APCO-25 (maybe?).

3. A data slicer is an interface that allows your computer to decode (using the correct software) data that can be heard over your scanner. One of the most popular uses is to run "trunker" (or any of the *trunker family) which gives you a lot of info as to what is happening on a trunked system. It can be used for other programs as well - some to decode weather faxes, satellite images, etc. All you need is a frequency to listen to and a program to decode what you hear.

4. A Radio Shack employee *might* know what the stuff is. They probably won't know what a data slicer is. If you take that parts list in to them, they can probably fix you up with what you need. Only extra things would be a breadboard (or experimenter board), and cables and connectors to hook to your scanner's discriminator tap (which provides unfiltered audio to the jack of your choice).

5. I have not tapped a Pro-92 - I'm sure we can do it. I do not know if you can fit a 1/8" plug in it. I have a 1/16" (I think - it's a "mini mono plug") plug in my Pro-94.

6. The 2-level interface is the first diagram on that page. ( http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=8 )

Parts list (in case you don't want to go read on that page):

1x 741 (dual)OpAmp
2x 100K resistors
1x 10K resistor
1x 0.1uF capacitor
2x 10uF capacitors
4x 1N4148 or 1N914 diodes (usually come in packages of 10 or so)
1x DB9 or DB25 serial connector (female)
1x experimenters breadboard (white, usually about $8.00)
connectors of your choice to connect to scanner and to serial connector (2 conductor for audio, 4 for serial)
you may want a serial cable (male to female) to connect to your computer (so you don't have to crawl behind your computer as much)

I hope that got all those questions. Any others?

I think Matthew is going to bring several "kits" for the dataslicers. He priced the parts and figured that they were around 4 bucks each. So, if you plan on building one, bring 4 bucks. lol. As far as the jack for the pro 95, what size should it be? 1/8 or 1/16.

Also, i can bring a dremel tool if that would work? Let me know!

I have tapped my Pro 92. Following Crayon's advice, I drilled the hole in the wrong spot though. Eyeballing the inside, it looks like you can fit a 1/8 mono jack in there. The problem I ran into, the battery compartment got in the way and I couldn't fit it in there. Basically, what I had to do is just run the 2 wires out of the hole and connect it to the 1/8 jack. I'm looking for ways to tear apart a splitter I have and using the rubber/plastic casing to make it look pretty! Although I won't be able to bring my 92 (already dedicated to something else), I know where to tap it and so on!

Dremels work nicely (especially if you don't have a good drill set). That's what I used on mine.

For tapping a '95, I'm not sure on that one either. Usually handheld scanners are very tight inside. We can certainly look and see if a 1/8" plug will fit. I'm pretty sure you can't get a RCA jack on it!

That $4 probably includes either a solder breadboard or no breadboard at all. I've heard of people making these w/o a breadboard (they fit it in the serial connector head), but I'm not that skilled (maybe some of you are). If Nemo46 checks this, he might want to bring some experimenter's boards (and solder boards also perhaps).

I'm bringing enough kits for 4 people. Matt, (N5MRK) has already called one, I'm using one so that leaves 2. The price will be about 10 bucks for everything. (My earlier quote of 4 was neglecting some rather vital parts.)
First come first served, lol. Hope to see everyone there.

is there anyway you can bring more? I know we'll probably need a few more. That is of course if people who want them aren't bringing their own supplies.

I appreciate your efforts! Thanks!
